Further to the other GG thread, this thread is for discussion of the four feature-length episodes which will drop on Netflix on Friday 25 November.

The thread may contain spoilers both for the original seven series of GG AND for GG:AYITL.

Oh yes that makes sense re the visit to Christopher! That's what I meant about allowing Rory and jess a future. Rory and Logan are over.
I really didn't like the forgotten boyfriend storyline. What did that add? I can see how Logan and Rory could talk themselves into their affair being ok since Logan's engagement was strategic but that paul guy seemed perfectly nice.

Dozer · 26/11/2016 09:06

I didn't like the boyfriend thing either. Unless meant to add intregue to the pregnancy storyline.

Jess would be a far better bet now than Logan! Logan could cough up decent maintenance! Him fathering OW's child would likely scupper his engagement.

toastymarshmallow · 26/11/2016 09:24

So many feelings.

I enjoyed it on the whole. It did feel very familiar... I was worried that Alexis Bledel wasn't going to be able to get back into character from the small bits in the trailers. But she did.

I loved that they brought Digger Styles back, but a pity about Max not being in it.

The musical was a waste of time that could have been used to expand Lanes story or to let us meet Michels husband. Or to answer the questions I have.

Did Paris and Doyle get divorced or did they reconcile and add an elevator?

What was the name/sex of Sookie and Jacksons third baby that she was still pregnant with at the end of season 7?

Why was Emily not at Lorelai's wedding?

Also, I hate what they did to Rory and Logan. I don't find that plausible at all. She turned him down and he walked away. I can't imagine any scenario in which they decide to start an affair after that. And are we supposed to hate him now? I was Team Logan and now I feel like I am being pushed towards Team Jess but he just is not right for her at all. I don't care about full circles or parallels between mother and daughter. Grr. Rory doesn't need to have a Christopher and a Luke.

Sobbed my heart out through the pretzel scene. So heartbroken that Richard/Ed Herrman is gone. I read that he was in favour of a revival. So sad that he didn't get to see it. Sad

It wasn't closure. Maybe we wil never get closure.

Cherrypi · 26/11/2016 09:31

The Amy episodes (winter, autumn) were definitely better than the Daniel episodes. I really liked it. They could have been some editing I think they weren't as tight as the episodes. I wanted more Jess and Rory.

toastymarshmallow · 26/11/2016 09:31

I should add that the reason I feel Jess isn't right is because all the way through Rory has been drawn toward the life that Lorelai ran from. Luke is perfect for Lorelai because he isn't part of her parents world, he is normal, he is Stars Hollow and that's what Lorelai needs and wants.

But Rory wanted more. She wanted the Cotillion and private education. She is a member of the DAR. She was drawn towards the LDB and Logan despite Lorelai's distaste for the whole thing.

Writing Rory as a repeat of Lorelai is a contradiction to the entire show before this revival.

Cherrypi · 26/11/2016 09:44

Also do you think Hilary Clinton mentions were cut?

CheerfullyIndifferent · 26/11/2016 10:05

I like the Brexit mention Grin runs for cover

DoYouRememberJustinBobby · 26/11/2016 10:39

Oh yes the pretzel scene floored me. 😥
Just starting my second go through.

DoYouRememberJustinBobby · 26/11/2016 10:42

The scene where she goes to the online magazine for an interview really annoyed me. Rory always thought so many things were beneath her.

Dozer · 26/11/2016 11:08

She did, she made that same mistake once before too, thinking she'd get a Nee Yorker internship and turning down a job on a smaller paper.

Dozer · 26/11/2016 11:09

You're right toastymarshmallow.

Christopher seemed so stuffy and stilted in his office!

Number4OnTheWay · 26/11/2016 11:22

Why wasn't April going to be at the wedding? I hated what they did to Sookie, she wasn't herself. She loved the inn and I struggle to believe she would have walked away for 2 years without keeping in touch with lorali. Also her voice and mannerisms were all wrong.
And they can't leave us on a cliff hanger like that! There are still too many unanswered questions :(

Number4OnTheWay · 26/11/2016 11:24

I didn't find Rory believable either. She was always very loyal. Her and dean had an affair because she believed they were over, she was devastated to discover Lindsey thought they were very much together. there's no way she would cheat on her boyfriend like that.

Dozer · 26/11/2016 12:25

Perhaps it was trying to show how lost she has been in lots of ways.

Perhaps sookie's voice etc was different because they only booked a short time with melissa mccarthy and she hadn't got fully into character. Still a good scene though, always loved Sookie and Michel at odds!

Gherkinsmummy · 26/11/2016 13:11

There was a lot to enjoy but the big problem is Rory. She's meant to be 32 not 25! The affair with Logan was unbelievable, as was her general attitude to life. Turning up to interviews totally unprepared, body shaming people at the pool, treating Paul with utter contempt; she didn't even seem particularly sad about her grandfather!

I wish we'd had fewer cameos and more actual story. Has Lane managed to discover the joy of sex? Would have been nice to see Michel's husband. I would have preferred Sookie to have died in a tragic accident - it made no sense for her to be there making cakes but not at the wedding.

Emily is awesome.

Ncbecauseitshard · 26/11/2016 15:02

I hated Rory as the Other woman, she'd walked that path before with Dean and learned from it. To be right back there spoiled the whole thing for me.
Rory Gilmore would have been the annoying girl with a website not floundering around. That much money and contacts and education and no firm career, no regular work? He'll had she been writing corporate bumpf for Richards old pals it would have been something.

The townsfolk and Luke made it enjoyable. Kurt, Taylor, Babette and Gypsy were fabulous.
Lane, I wanted so much more for her, couldn't she have been a YouTube star, giving great drum tutorials? Something?

rivierliedje · 26/11/2016 15:13

For some reason I thought Rory was pregnant fairly early on in the fall episode. And then definitely when she talked to Christopher. So I was waiting for her to mention it to Lorelai for the rest of the episode.

KatieScarlett · 26/11/2016 15:16

Was that Carole King playing the piano in the musical bit (instead of Abba)?
Got to be Logans baby. Wookie would have made Rory 5 or 6 months PG at the end.
I agree, Sookie was just off. Not good at all.
Loved Emily at the DAR and all of the Paris scenes. Especially her bathroom meltdown at Chilton Grin
Would have loved to see the wedding flash mobs.

BarryTheKestrel · 26/11/2016 15:26

It can not end like that. It just can't.

KatieScarlett · 26/11/2016 15:31

(Strokes Barry's head)
I know, I know...

Graphista · 26/11/2016 15:43

But you have to remember Rory was never good at going solo/being independant. Whenever she's been in that kind of situation she screws it up. (The break from Yale, the New Yorker job offer) so that DOES fit the character it just doesn't fit what lorelai/Luke/Emily/Christopher etc think her capable of, others around her have more realistic expectations of her.

Ditto romantically, she had an emotional affair with Jess while with dean, then slept with dean when he was clearly married (which lorelai called her on) and it took her an entire summer to realise she was in the wrong there, lead Marty on, agreed to a casual relationship with Logan happily dating other guys but hating him dating other girls... She's no saint.

I guessed the last 4 words would involve a baby, circle of THEIR (lorelai and Rory's) life but it could be a boy and 'his name is Rory'.

Clearly the writers see Logan as her Christopher and Jess as her luke. But Logan's too selfish to be a Christopher (Christopher a bit selfish but more weak than decisively so).

As for her age - sadly these days I think there's a lot of immature 30-somethings (which the writers seem to agree with), no clear career focus or family responsibilities. More like 20-somethings of my generation (showing my age Grin).

Sookie - producers screwed up! They should have got her involvement secured much earlier, Melissa is incredibly busy and successful I think the most successful cast member? As soon as it was being discussed they should have contacted her, from what I've read and seen in interviews they left it quite late to even ask her.

I agree character wise NO WAY sookie would have left that inn. Writers could have written her in 'invisibly' 'she's in the kitchen/ER/kids are sick' one sided phone calls, one sided 'off stage' comments etc

Ncbecauseitshard · 26/11/2016 15:43

Yes it was Carole King, she'd cameod in the past in the music shop being mean to lane.

Graphista · 26/11/2016 15:46

I love Carole King in it but 'where you lead' being left out altogether? Sacrilege!

Dozer · 26/11/2016 17:15
Grin
Andylion · 26/11/2016 17:19

Some thoughts:

  • the Paul thing and body-shaming at the pool put me off. I know the GGs are not perfect, but these two elements made them quite unlikable.
  • I wish there had been more Sookie, but I think they did the best they could given they seemed to have screwed up asking MM to participate in a timely fashion.
  • I too, would have liked more Lane
  • the musical was amusing..... until it went on too long
