Further to the other GG thread, this thread is for discussion of the four feature-length episodes which will drop on Netflix on Friday 25 November.

The thread may contain spoilers both for the original seven series of GG AND for GG:AYITL.

OP posts:

I couldn't believe how well most of them aged! And Miss Patty's weight loss is incredible!

Lorelei's face has aged, which actually made me very sad. Probably very shallow of me, but she was absolutely gorgeous! In season one I remember thinking what a beautiful woman she is.

I loved the fantasy of the Life or death brigade! Care free and adventurous, rich and beautiful. Fast and just lots of fun!!
I'm immobile and I'd just love to be able to do those things!

Luke is just gorgeous then and now! He is a lot like my husband - stubborn, grumpy, dress sense, manly... yum! Lol

I miss 90's dress sense!

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 11/12/2016 10:36

I watched This is Us, quite enjoyed it. Milo Ventimiglia is great in it.

Graphista · 11/12/2016 16:43

Miss patty doesn't look like miss patty though. Glad the actress losing the weight for her healths sake but think she looked better bigger.

LoreleiGilmorethesecond · 11/12/2016 20:20

I agree, it didn't look like her at all

DearMrDilkington · 11/12/2016 21:48

I've just watched all of the episodes. I'm Shock at the ending!!

Does this mean there will be more?

DearMrDilkington · 11/12/2016 21:49

I'm quite disappointed with Rory and the affair with Logan.. I thought after Dean she would have learnt her lesson.

I absolutely loved the new Emily though.

LoreleiGilmorethesecond · 12/12/2016 04:36

I don't think Rory ever thought she was in the wrong, when sleeping with Dean.
I felt like she thought he was hers before and he was unhappy in his marriage so it was ok. Then being caught by Lorelei, I think she was more upset about breaking the deal she had with her, to discuss losing her virginity first.
I might be wrong, but I don't think she showed remorse?

Graphista · 12/12/2016 05:06

She did when she was travelling with Emily and she asked lorelai to pass a letter to dean (that Lindsay found and so she knew he cheated). She also said so to lorelai at some point I think?

LoreleiGilmorethesecond · 12/12/2016 05:21

Right you are! Gosh I completely forgot that

Nickname1980 · 12/12/2016 09:47

I watched them all and loved watching them - but mainly because I'm a huge fan.

Hated that musical, I fast forwarded it. That and the circle scene after. Totally boring and pointless.

The whole thing was all about Lorelai for me. But then, so was the series.

Autumn was the best one. Loved Lorelai going to try and do "Wild", and her pretzel story made me cry. So did her talk with Luke when she got back.

Agree that Lorelai and Luke should have had the kid talk earlier, it didn't feel right that they would at 48.

Paris and Emily were brilliant.

Rory isn't as strong as Lorelai was at her age. Or as funny and witty and principled.

Did anyone think it could be the Wookie (no idea how to spell that!) who could be Rory's baby's father?! Agree it's prob Logan so she can mirror her mother's story though. Wookie would be neater!

Also agree that there were some indulgent moments, like the wedding, but I didn't mind too much.

If there were more I'd watch for sure! I love the characters of Lorelai, Emily, Paris, Michel etc too much. I never loved Rory, but I think ASP might make her match up to the way her mother was if they made more. I hope so anyway!

I am about Rory's age and know plenty of people floundering as much as her though. I didn't find that unbelievable.

DearMrDilkington · 12/12/2016 12:07

nickname I had to fastfoward the musical as well, it was awful and just wouldn't end! It seemed so pointless and felt like it was only used to fill some time up.

qumquat · 12/12/2016 17:51

I'm a bit disappointed that it turns out ASP meant to end the original series that way, and also that she'd planned Logan to be Rory's Christopher. It just seems really boring to just have everything repeat. I know the last series was criticised, but I think the ending of Rory going off to follow Barack Obama was much better. I love that final episode it still makes me cry buckets.

Also I hate that Lane's entire purpose in life is to listen to Rory's problems.

Nickname1980 · 12/12/2016 18:57

Yes qumwuat! Lane was so cool and knowledgable and interesting! Then she just ended up working in her mother's shop? Angry

And yeah, after who Rory was as a kid and all her ambitions, you'd think she'd follow her own path.

EverySongbirdSays · 12/12/2016 20:14

Wasn't overly impressed with this interview with ASP to be honest :

tvline.com/2016/12/01/gilmore-girls-a-year-in-the-life-amy-sherman-palladino-interview-final-four-words/

The comments say it all. That the problem with AYITL is her refusal to treat S7 as canon.

This then meant that all her storylines for everyone picked up were S6 left off - the only exception being Emily, because of Hermann's death and that's why Emily's is the only one that works.

And why there's nothing to gain for Lane because she didn't write Lane's pregnancy story and has nothing to say about her as a parent

Similarly though Rory ended S7 with a decent job as a political correspondant for an online news thing.

That didn't happen for ASP so Rory's career is like that of a college grad not someone who graduated 8 years ago, and would already be on their Plan B by now or have a solid gig somewhere or a book deal.

Rory basically wanted to be Kate Adie remember?

ASP is STILL sore about S7 and THAT is evident here because they refuse to accept it existed and that's what led to the fans getting shafted.

Also, wasting all that time giving an actress from her failed show, a shining moment by making her the musical lead. This has nothing to do Gilmore and is just for that actor to give her a role to show off in and Jobs For The Boys.

Not everyone has even seen Bunheads

PoldarksBreeches · 12/12/2016 20:26

True. I was very confused and quite pissed off about the amount of time seemingly dedicated to fans of some other show.

LemonRedwood · 12/12/2016 20:51

I, too, fast forwarded the musical. I'm poorly sick today and the cringing was physically hurting my face.

EverySongbirdSays · 12/12/2016 21:02

Wow Lemon that's so weird.

I literally just text someone with "I'm poorly sick"

It's like an echo.

I have plague

LemonRedwood · 12/12/2016 21:10

Commiserations on your plague, Every

I thought I just had a cold, but a bout of vomiting at work this morning proved otherwise. They kindly sent me home so I could enjoy GG on Netflix (musical part notwithstanding!).

Graphista · 12/12/2016 23:16

Omg I'm so dim! Of COURSE Rory is now the same age as lorelai was in s1!!

cheesydoesit · 12/12/2016 23:47

Yeah, ASP sounds like a right prat in that interview.

Tableforjuan · 05/01/2017 00:38

Rory pregnant at 22 (had the last 4 words been S7)would be a very different situation to pregnant at 32, and much more of a parallel to Lorelei's life. I actually really liked series 7 and it was a shame they chose to mainly ignore it.

I went straight from rewatching the old ones into AYITL and felt sad that they all looked older. Also found Rory's situation quite depressing, particularly when she said 'I need to be 20 again'. All 3 of her exes turned out to be lovely (though Logan still unreliable, cheating) and seemed like she missed the boat.

Agree with Songbird that surrogacy was an improbable career for the wonderful Paris. In S6 Lorelei said that she wanted another kid with Luke, so I felt they should have either had one, or addressed infertility/decision not to.

FaithAgain · 08/01/2017 22:56

I've just finished watching it all (I started from the very beginning). I have very mixed feelings! It's useful to know about ASP acting like S7 didn't happen. It did feel disjointed. Nice to see Lorelai and Luke get married. I do wish we'd seen Rory get things together at the end though!

Nickname1980 · 09/01/2017 13:20

I agree, tableforjuan. Lorelai and Luke would / should have addressed their baby issues years ago. I feel like this was just ASP's way of having a go at them.

Rory just seemed too out of her own character!

FaithAgain · 09/01/2017 14:39

The money thing was always a bit weird in GG. Like, Lorelai never came across as s saver. However there was a long period where they'd just started up the Dragonfly when she was always saying how she didn't have any money coming in, yet she had to live/pay bills/pay the mortgage and she was supporting Rory at college? Rory never had PT jobs in college either. You'd imagine she'd be more like Joey in Dawson's Creek, always working to earn cash to keep afloat.

Fwiw I don't know if Richard would have made specific provisions in his will for Lorelai and Rory. Quite often estates go directly to the spouse only. Someone said about 'Trix' (the original Lorelai) giving Rory a trust fund - she said she planned to set it up but changes her mind after Lorelai is rude at a restaurant.

Nickname1980 · 09/01/2017 14:58

Yeah Lorelai's convenient constant source of cash (conveniently not there or there for plot points) was always a bit of a flaw.

But Rory wasn't as proud as Lorelai so I can imagine she'd happily accept money from her grandparents as she got older. Plus that trust fund from Trix was meant to come in when Rory turned 21, right? Or am I remembering that wrong?
