Here we are to rant and rave

OP posts:
LadyConstanceDeCoverlet · 27/10/2016 17:49

It really does baffle me the hate that people have.

This. However does anyone even manage to work themselves up to that much hatred of someone they only see for around, at most, 20 minutes a week for a few weeks? None of the haters know her, she's done nothing to harm them, she's not going to do anything to harm them. People who do actually know her like Jane seem actually to like her, despite the fact that they're rivals. No-one will make you buy her books or watch any further TV programme she might appear in.

The extraordinary thing is that we see less hate expressed round here for things and people that actually deserve hate. It's all very strange.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 27/10/2016 17:54

Anyone else notice that the posters directing misogynistic abuse at Candice always add that they like Jane, who seems so nice and genuine, unlike that awful hussy Candice.

The misogynists version of oh no, I can't be racist, I have a black friend.

Agree some of the comments are revolting and mean spirited.

Helpisathand13 · 27/10/2016 17:58

I'm not sure if the movement to channel 4 will change that honesty we see in it on the BBC. I agree Mel and Sue do a great job of engaging with the bakers and providing a calming and fun influence at times to help them. I really don't like the xfactor tv style of back sob story, life challenges and traumas. Not necessary and I hope that sort of TV does not infect GBBO. Cant be the same without the judges and presenters it will be a very different show

BertrandRussell · 27/10/2016 18:10

Yep. Misogynists hate women who aren't nice and compliant and "mumsy"

Candace is their least favourite type. Sharp and funny and competitive.

There seems to be a whiff of homophobia around too............

ample · 27/10/2016 18:13

The GBBO as we know it has gone. It's over.
C4 will (for good or bad) make it their own. And I'll read all about it on MN Grin

I don't watch X-Factor or whatever talent/game shows are on tv so I wouldn't know about the behind the scenes, but I will cringe for the next series of contestants if it is anything like you describe Helpisathand13.

YouHadMeAtCake · 27/10/2016 18:24

I loved Jane but I believe Candice truly deserved to win. Any nasty bitchy comments about her are just pathetic. Women putting women down, shameful. She's pretty and she's a talented baker. Nobody knows her and can't judge her personality from the minute amount of time she was on tv.

Helpisathand13 · 27/10/2016 18:26

Cant say I'm keen for the Channel 4 change.

They've just said that 14.8million watched it last night... the most watched programme... surely BBC have scored a bit of an own goal selling it off.

It just irritates me how they are going on and on about it on BBC when they've sold the programme up the river Angry

LemonRedwood · 27/10/2016 18:33

The BBC didn't sell it; they don't make it. They couldn't afford to keep it.

ample · 27/10/2016 18:35

The BBC will be need something big popular to replace it next year

Roussette · 27/10/2016 18:50

Yes, my mistake. They weren't prepared to pay for it. Not sure they couldn't actually afford it though ... they pay Graham Norton £2.5M a year FFS! Ditto Chris Evans, Gary Lineker etc... Doctor Who reputedly cost £2M per episode to make and so on.

I just think it's a crying shame - a programme that everyone can watch, that is so lovely and gets such enormous viewing figures and they can't or won't pay.

AppleAndBlackberry · 27/10/2016 18:54

I can only think that Candace redid her ganache and we weren't shown that bit because the final result looked great. I liked all of them, I definitely 'got' Andrew, being a bit of a geek myself, but with uncooked pastry from the other two Candace deserved to win.

Helpisathand13 · 27/10/2016 18:57

I really like it and love the styling, presenters, judging and format. It is easy lovely viewing. Always positive and feel good. Like strictly I think. I shall miss that. I agree personal comments about contestants are unnecessary, we all warm to people and pick favourites which is natural but no need for mud slinging or making stuff up. Jane was my fave but absolutely well done to them all. I thought Candice came over really well at the end when she was announced as the winner and I definitely warmed to her more.

Roussette · 27/10/2016 19:14

Maybe there's hope

Oblomov16 · 27/10/2016 19:17

Didn't they say at the end that candice was going on a road trip with Jane. Really? Together?

Candice overcooked her tarts. They were dark brown almost black, where they had caught. But in the presentation they looked totally fine. Odd. Hmm

Jane's cake didn't look good, after the white chocolate didn't stick. And her pastry was undercooked.

Same with Andrew. Shards on cake were great, but the rest of the cake was basic and underwhelming looking. His pastry on the sausage rolls was also undercooked.

Candice, most of her stuff was well cooked and tasty. She deserved to win.

IAmTheBFG · 27/10/2016 19:22

My Dd was smitten with Andrew throughout the whole series and was rather disappointed when Candice won, but she was the better baker in the final and is more marketable than the other two

YetAnotherHelenMumsnet · 27/10/2016 19:35

Evening all! We've deleted the posts that insinuate that Candice didn't win on her own baking merit because, well, it's 2016.

Also... Buttery Delicious. That's the worst Bake Off name yet, isn't it? Blush Not even an innuendo, barely even an Aberdonian pastry.

2kids2dogsnosense · 27/10/2016 19:36

Faded
I would like to a final programme with Mary and Paul having to produce a random selection of the bakes, in the tent conditions (same ovens, ambient temperature etc) in the same time (or maybe 10% less time as they are the experts). I would put money on them not producing perfect showstopper baking either

Just saw this post of yours - I would DEFINITELY watch that! And I'll bet you are right - they would be little better than the contestants.

Elendon · 27/10/2016 19:55

I think Candice was a worthy winner (though I still think Benjamina should have won). Can't wait for the cook book this Christmas - Candice made some brilliant stuff and those little sausage rolls were delightful!

Such a shame that was the last one!

Soubriquet · 27/10/2016 20:01

Thank you Helen

BakeOffBiscuits · 27/10/2016 20:06

Thank you Helen.

MitzyLeFrouf · 27/10/2016 20:14

There's a programme on BBC at the moment about last year's contestants. Had forgotten all about Ian and his homemade steel contraptions.

TheSpottedZebra · 27/10/2016 20:27

I'm watching it, Mitzy . The standard was soooooo much higher last year! Bread Lion! Ian's functioning (wishing) well. Even the non standout things seemed better, like the patterns baked into cake.

MitzyLeFrouf · 27/10/2016 20:33

Yes there's such a contrast between last year's and this year's isn't there? Lion loaf was epic! And I'd forgotten Flora and her obsession with putting macarons with everything 😀
