Here we are to rant and rave

OP posts:
SleepyHare · 27/10/2016 11:04

How is she vintage?!

squoosh · 27/10/2016 11:05

I think she'd be a fool not to cash in quite frankly. Who wants to run around a hockey pitch at 9am on a miserable Monday morning when you could be creating recipes for your new cookbook instead! I wasn't mad about Candice but I have no problem with her grabbing any opportunities that come her way as a result of the win.

Marbleheadjohnson · 27/10/2016 11:06

She is quite a fan of vintage from the non Bake Off photos of her I have seen, good point.

squoosh · 27/10/2016 11:06

Winks and innuendo too. She'll be the Barbara Windsor of bakes.

if you're reading publishing bods feel free to use that as the cover strapline. Grin

TheSpottedZebra · 27/10/2016 11:06

All her social media pics the ones that have been shown on the DM are vintagey.

TheSpottedZebra · 27/10/2016 11:07

She puts the on! back into cooking, Squoosh.

TheSpottedZebra · 27/10/2016 11:07

The oo.

DYAC.

squoosh · 27/10/2016 11:08

And whenever she makes a sauce she'll have to say 'ooooh, saucy'.

squoosh · 27/10/2016 11:09

And quite frankly I'd rather her than those bloody Hemsley Sisters and their joy free food.

SleepyHare · 27/10/2016 11:10

Oh Christ no I couldn't deal with that.

I only think it's funny when Mel and Sue do the innuendos.

Hmmm her Instagram is slightly vintage, tho it does have vintage in the description. Maybe that's it, tho I don't think it's all that unique.

Good for her if she gets a career out of it, but I won't personally be watching her show!

I do agree though I think the general standard has been lower this year, and the show stoppers haven't stopped any shows!

SleepyHare · 27/10/2016 11:11

Ha squoosh I agree. Anyone but them!

jingscrivvens · 27/10/2016 11:12

Just did the name innuendo generator and I'm gooey crack! Better head off to the Doctor's with that one... Halloween Grin

MiddleClassProblem · 27/10/2016 11:13

I have never seen the Hemsley sisters other than a clip on goggle box where they made pea low cal ice cream, not as a funky side but as a sweet treat... That's just desperate, I can't get hold of chocolate and it's 10pm on a bank hol but I have cooking skills behaviour at best.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 27/10/2016 11:24

What a lot of judgmental people there are. Seems worse than with Ruby (which I didn't get either).

emotionsecho · 27/10/2016 11:52

I agree whats, tearing Candice apart because of her looks, her choice of lipstick, her facial expressions, her perceived personality, choice of boyfriend (particularly as she wasn't with him when he committed his crime and most of MN seem to have a very laissez faire attitude to cannabis in the main which makes it all the more Hmm) is pretty low imo.

I thought she was a good baker, was ambitious with what she produced, always pushed herself rather than take the 'easy' option, she came across as self deprecating and friendly to the others to me.

I prefer this type of showstopper bake for the final than just one massive cake. The picnic/afternoon tea type showstopper tests all their skills rather than just the ability to make and ice a cake.

CoffeeWithMyOxygen · 27/10/2016 11:53

Candice has already said what her dream is - a little vintage style tea shop of her own. Hardly the money-grabbing commercial mogul that people seem to want to make her out to be!

I'm thrilled that she won, she always struck me as someone who has very little self-confidence and tried hard to hide behind a persona because she's too scared to be herself. Her speech at the end where she said 'I'm GOOD' was lovely and a little heartbreaking - she's clearly never believed it before.

squoosh · 27/10/2016 11:55

'Her speech at the end where she said 'I'm GOOD' was lovely and a little heartbreaking - she's clearly never believed it before.'

Really? That's not the vibe I get from her at all. She has bags of confidence.

I thought she was channelling Sally Field's 'you like me' Oscar acceptance speech.

BalloonSlayer · 27/10/2016 12:24

I think people are being unfair. I don't think she had any disasters in the final. Her pastry cases were not burnt - they were overdone. And that was mentioned.

I think that as a teacher (and a PE teacher to boot) she will have a lot of skills that will work for TV.

I would like to see her in a "the choir" type thing but with baking, teaching awkward kids how to create fantastic combined-effort bakes. That their parents and teachers can all come in and eat and marvel at at the end of the programme. Raised self-esteem all round. She could do it with ease due to her classroom control skills. (And none of this tedious "now think of four ways to make it a more healthy option" that you get with GCSE food tech, which sucks all the joy out of cooking.)

< pitches idea to BBC >

EssentialHummus · 27/10/2016 12:47

I just can't warm to Candice. I don't know what it is, I just can't read her. I found Nadiya incredibly bright, fun, engaging - I get none of that with Candice.

What was more disappointing, though, it that in the bloody final there were still endless burnt pastry cases, soggy bottoms, raw pastry. I don't know if the timings this year were just unrealistic or if the overall standard of bakers was lower, but it was underwhelming.

squoosh · 27/10/2016 12:47

Andrew's soggy tart cases things were pretty shocking.

987flowers · 27/10/2016 13:07

I don't think the themes have helped the show stoppers. Batter week seemed an all time low for me. I also think they have been so pushed for time they couldn't make things to a decent standard- the fondant fancy one in particular (especially when Mary recommends baking the sponge the night before). I wish they had been given another hour last night for their show stopper rather than having to try and do everything in such a short space of time (or been allowed to prep pastry the night before).

I wonder if they could do a bake of finalist bake off where we could compare the contestants from previous series.

Roussette · 27/10/2016 13:09

Yes, it's like mine are when it all goes terribly wrong!

I have nothing against Candice but I can't say I really warm to her in the same way as I have with other contestants. I also preferred Jane's style of baking more than Candice's... where she threw every colour and conceivable style at her baking. (the three tier cake was a travesty, a multitude of colours and looked like it was about to topple over)

She is just about to come on Loose Women C3 now...

LadyConstanceDeCoverlet · 27/10/2016 13:32

But because Janes (more impressive looking) cake didn't have a collar she got slated.

Were you watching a different programme? What I recall was a mild comment that it was a shame the collar hadn't worked, but congratulations that she'd found a different way to deal with it. No slating at all. The main criticism was directed at the underdone pastry on the sausage rolls and the lack of flavour in the scones.

LadyConstanceDeCoverlet · 27/10/2016 13:39

Why would anyone want to fix the result, FFS? They've been perfectly happy in the past to boot the young glamorous types in favour of middle aged and older contestants. It's never been a given that the winner will go on to a TV career so they don't need to promote anything like that. If they wanted people who were more obviously marketable to win, they'd have winched Selasi into the final ahead of Jane.
