Only time they'd do that was if she was getting in the way of his medical care.

ITU /HDU usually has loads of nurses around. Stella walking straight in without having to ring a bell for entry and then hang around for a few minutes without being spotted was very unlikely, but UK crime dramas always seem to have patients in HDU attached to hundreds of machines being killed by randoms who just wander in when the place is deserted.
The script writers obviously believe the Tories when they say NHS hospitals are deserted at night.

That nurse is definitely up to something. That was so tense at the end! 😬😬😬
