Oh Lord M... Fuck me but Rufus has been amazing in this. I feel the urge to revisit Middlemarch...

Clawdy · 18/09/2016 22:21

Victoria wrote in her diary the day after her wedding night : "Oh, what heavenly bliss...." I imagine they were both very young, very lonely and suddenly found their lives transformed by each other.

Oblomov16 · 18/09/2016 22:26

Dh and I have really enjoyed this. It's been slated, but I think it's been truely brilliant, Coleman, Hughes, Sewell.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/09/2016 22:29

I don't think the applause at the wedding is correct. Was also wondering about the sword lord M was carrying. It wasn't the pearl sword, and that is only carried when HM goes into the City. The chapel royal isn't in the city.

Happened to be in London last week and saw the Albert Memorial in Kensington. Bloody hell, she really went nuts for him.

I think she looks like Louise Wener.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/09/2016 22:36

Ah, it's the sword of state. Carried at the state opening if parliament. My bed.

Runny · 18/09/2016 22:57

I think the reason it's been slated is that it's full of historical inaccuracies. The film the Young Victoria with a Emily Blunt as Victoria is so much better, there's also a BBC2 drama from the early 2000's called Victoria and Albert that's better than this as well.

The idea that Victoria was in love with Lord M is absurd. He was like a father figure to her. Her own father died when she was a baby and he filled that void, there was nothing romantic about it. There's artistic licence and then there's bollocks. This is the latter.

DiegeticMuch · 19/09/2016 11:03

I'm not interested in the manipulative chef (lol at "Barrow lite") and the maid. It feels superflous. I still love Mrs Jenkins and I enjoyed the poignant scene between the butler and the German lady's maid.

It's a real shame that they portrayed her interest in Lord M as romantic. As a pp said, that's taking artistic licence too far. There is nothing in her diaries, as far as I've heard, to imply that she felt anything but respect and fondness for him.

BeckerLleytonNever · 19/09/2016 16:23

I was reading a bit today about her. apparently she DID wear diamonds on her wedding day.

and in her diary she wrote after her wedding night ''we did not sleep much''. ooh er, missus!

still see the actor like Ron mael though, and Albert had more sideburns.

and Lord M hada daughter with mental health problems (according to my history book) and couldn't bond with her and so saw Victoria as a daughter.

and yy ther white wedding dress tradition started with her.

I though it was against the law to marry cousins? or is thast only allowed in royalty?

Isnt Philip the Queens cousin too?

ReggaeShark · 19/09/2016 17:17

It's still legal for first cousins to marry Shock

DiegeticMuch · 19/09/2016 17:31

Philip and the Queen are distant cousins. Philip is descended from Victoria's daughter Alice. They're both descended from Christian of Denmark too. The family tree is bonkers, and loads of people have the same first name.

ButteredToastAndStrawberryJam · 19/09/2016 17:55

Really enjoyed the last couple of episodes, missed the first 3. The chemistry is so good between queenie and Albert, as PP says, they're an item in RL and it shows, loving it.

seasidesally · 19/09/2016 18:17

watching this has made me google Victoria and her life

im really enjoying it

I am loving it. I've read all aboit Victoria and Albert's lives since i started watching too. I'm still reading about him actually, it seems like he made a lot of good decisions that helped their family and the country.

TheLegendOfBeans · 20/09/2016 13:01

Just came on here to say - wow. The guy that plays Albert basically gets more beautiful with every episode.

Absolutely loving this series.

tessiegirl · 20/09/2016 13:42

Watching this and am enjoying it but not the downstairs bits all that much.

I think I am the only one who is a bit annoyed by Albert though! That accent! Cringe! Smile

ButteredToastAndStrawberryJam · 20/09/2016 15:26

Just came on here to say - wow. The guy that plays Albert basically gets more beautiful with every episode. I agree, I've looked at other photos of him and the 'Albert' look really suits him the best.

Watching this and am enjoying it but not the downstairs bits all that much. I know what you mean, I think I'm comparing it to Downton.

I think I am the only one who is a bit annoyed by Albert though! That accent! Cringe! smile Sorry, not been listening to his accent ;), will have to take more notice.

raisedbyguineapigs · 20/09/2016 18:10

I agree about Tom Hughes. Beautiful! Agree about the chemistry between JC and him. When she was playing the piano furiously and he just walked in the first time they met and said 'Victoria' I thought my telly was going to explode Shock

Housewife2010 · 20/09/2016 18:25

Did the aristocracy wear nightdresses in the bath?

ButteredToastAndStrawberryJam · 20/09/2016 19:49

raised I missed the first 3 episodes, off to Iplayer that bit Shock

Yes, I thought that about the nightdress in bath. The little tiny ladle was funny too, I thought they were putting some kind of conditioning oil on her hair or something.

raisedbyguineapigs · 20/09/2016 23:40

buttered It's the last scene of episode 3!

ButteredToastAndStrawberryJam · 21/09/2016 08:07

Thank you raised Twas a good bit, I watched a glut of all the episodes last night, so many good bits.

JudyCoolibar · 21/09/2016 14:52

I think they possibly did wear nightdresses in the bath. It was an extremely prudish period of history.

diddl · 22/09/2016 20:52

Am I the only one who finds Albert really annoying?

"I want a title"
"I want to be in Parliament"
"I want money"

"Waah, waah, waah!"
