The were sent to Australia and eventually permitted to return home in 1856 but some stayed in Australia and at least one became very, very rich. There was a drama series on Channel 4 a few years back, The Mill, that dealt with the Charterists and had one of it's main characters shipped to Australia before being cancelled. It was (very, very loosely) based on real millworkers.

LineyReborn · 11/09/2016 21:06

Here we go. It's all gone a bit Jane Austen.

NigellasGuest · 11/09/2016 21:34

Springer I'd love to watch the 70's Edward VII again - how did you watch it, is it on YouTube?

deltacrook · 11/09/2016 21:50

I am watching but it's not gripping like I'd hoped it would be.

Mynestisfullofempty · 11/09/2016 21:59

I'm probably the only one old enough to think this (i.e. because I remember them from the 1970s), but the way Albert is being portrayed reminds me so much of the 'weird' one with the moustache in (start @ 1.10 to see what I mean).

specialsubject · 11/09/2016 22:04

THAT'S who it is!!! (I am old too...)

QueenSpartacusOfTheAndals · 11/09/2016 22:33

"Only a fool would turn you away Ma'am"

And with that, Rufus broke my heart!

DiegeticMuch · 12/09/2016 10:15

Maybe contentious, but I like the Albert casting. He's exactly how I imagine PA to have been, and there's real chemistry between him and Coleman I think.

I still find it a bit soapy, and the historical inaccuracies are vexing, but I'll be tuning in until the end.

Eve Myles: "Windsor on a Wednesday! Whatever next?" - this was funny.

Edward the Seventh is available on DVD for about £10 second hand on Amazon, and would be money well spent imo.

AlfrescoBalconyWanker · 12/09/2016 10:54

Well Mr Penge went up in my estimation there Grin

raisedbyguineapigs · 12/09/2016 11:51

Yes, he is exactly how I imagined Albert to be as well. Overly serious and brooding! Just my kind of guy Grin. If I remember correctly, he did have a concern for the poor ( maybe not enough to do anything about it) and did attempt to get Victoria to be a bit more compassionate. I don't know anything about German accents, as all the Germans I know speak English so well, that their accents just sound like very polite English, but good on him for doing the accent for the whole show, considering he's from Cheshire!

BeckerLleytonNever · 12/09/2016 16:35

LOL! I was thinking exactly the same, Albert looked the keyboard guy from Sparks.! Grin.

And when he sat at the paino to play.....where was the other guy with the curly hair launching into ;this town aint big enough for the both of us' Hee hee hee!

Jim Howick as Albert in Horrible histories was more lookalike than this one.

And agree, Jennas too 'disney' looking. was good chemistry between them though.

diddl · 12/09/2016 19:24

Ooh that was boring!

Albert just came off as rude to me.

How I was hoping that she would tell him to go away!

Housewife2010 · 12/09/2016 22:03

Lillie is available on YouTube. I watched it last year. I remember watching it & Edward VIi as a child with my Mum. I think Edward VIi is there too.

YesOfCourseAlways · 14/09/2016 11:34

Just caught up on it, I really enjoyed it. I LOVED Albert, he's not rude he's brooding 😉

specialsubject · 14/09/2016 14:23

Lillie AND Edward VII on Youtube? there goes my winter....

brilliant. Drama from when you had to pay attention for more than 20 seconds.

DiegeticMuch · 14/09/2016 16:26

Specialsubject - couldn't agree with your last sentence more!

NigellasGuest · 15/09/2016 09:01

I will check out YouTube for Edward VII and failing that invest in a dvd I think. I'd love to see that again. And as for Lillie, that is on ITV encore, if anyone gets that channel. I rewatched the whole series of Lillie on that a while back, and loved it so much.

Nettletheelf · 15/09/2016 22:07

Hahhaha I thought 'Ron Mael' when I saw Albert too!

Despite that, I found the last scene, where Victoria proposes and Albert says, "That depends", etc. delightful.

BeckerLleytonNever · 16/09/2016 16:06

The way Albert is (at least in this drama) MUCH more romantic and brooding and passionate, Id love to meet someone who fell for my like that! Sad.

That little rip in his shirt to put her flower next to his heart....Oh God.

Up on THAT list with Poldark and Darcy.

DiegeticMuch · 18/09/2016 13:25

It seems that JC and TH are a couple in real life. That would explain the chemistry then - ha!

raisedbyguineapigs · 18/09/2016 19:35

I used to work in Charlotte Street in London. I saw a very small girl with a very tall man and thought 'she looks a bit like Jenna Coleman' and then walked on. The next day there was a bit in the gossip bit of the Standard saying she was in Charlotte Street holding hands with a man! My DS is a mad Doctor Who fan and would have been thrilled if Id got her autograph or a picture! I also failed in my duty to get Matt Smiths autograph when I went to see him in a play...

Toddlerteaplease · 18/09/2016 21:56

Better this week. Except she would not have been married as Victoria. HmmConfused

seasidesally · 18/09/2016 22:02

yes was a good episode

sad Lord M going

scrappydappydoo · 18/09/2016 22:05

Loving the drama - intrigued how accurate it all is e.g. the throwing of the bouquet, the applause on marrying, the wedding cake. Can any historians throw light on the wedding etiquette of the time?

raisedbyguineapigs · 18/09/2016 22:12

IIRC, our modern wedding etiquette with the white dress and the tiered cake is all based on Victoria's wedding.

I really liked this week. The downstairs is getting slightly less annoying, although still superfluous. The chef 'Barrow Lite' and his hassling of the maid I'm still finding annoying and nasty though. I wish he'd go away.
