I think he wanted something for himself, to feel a bit independent instead of just being the Queens husband.

diddl · 22/09/2016 21:19

Oh I get where he was coming from-then again, he didn't have to marry her, did he if he was so against not having means of his own.

He could have carried on doing whatever he was doing to support himself.

So, I guess he felt how so many women of the time must have done who were supported by their fathers & then expected to marry well enough to continue to be supported.

FoxesOnSocks · 22/09/2016 21:23

He's feeling terribly sad for himself isn't he - must be awful for him the person in the relationship with power being a woman!!

He's still attractive though.

ButteredToastAndStrawberryJam · 22/09/2016 21:25

He didn't have any money though, I suppose his father was supporting him and wanted him married off. I don't think either one of them had much choice in the marriage.

diddl · 22/09/2016 21:31

What I didn't really get, although it seemed to be "the done thing(?)"

Was that Parliament agreed a sum for him-was that taken from Victoria's "allowance"?

I mean most of his expenses would just have been added to the household stuff, wouldn't they?

diddl · 22/09/2016 21:33

From thos portrayal, I just can't get what she sees in him at all.

raisedbyguineapigs · 22/09/2016 23:24

In those days, it probably was the ultimate humiliation to be of a lower status than your wife and have to ask her for money. Usually the wife's money would go from the father to the husband. Apparently old Phil wasn't overly enamoured with his reduced status to Liz, according to the fount of all knowledge- Horrible Histories Grin

raisedbyguineapigs · 22/09/2016 23:28

Maybe the husband's of royalty got allowances. Wasn't that the issue with the uncle still taking an allowance from the British state because he married a British princess? ( Uncle Leopold and Princess Charlotte, who I'm guessing was one of George III 's children?)

Housewife2010 · 23/09/2016 07:09

Still haven't found anything re nightdresses in the bath, but apparently they weren't as prim as we thought. Men and women of the upper classes went swimming separately. Up to the 1840s the women swam naked; the men continued until the 1850s.

raisedbyguineapigs · 23/09/2016 11:40

Apparently there will be a series 2 😊. Poor Jenna Coleman is going to have to spend the whole time in a fake bump suit. Wasn't Victoria almost permanently pregnant for about 10 years?

seasidesally · 23/09/2016 17:20

yes i heard about second series, really pleased with that

Love Albert.

woodhill · 25/09/2016 22:15

Lol at Sparks, perhaps he could have played an expert on the pianoforte.

woodhill · 25/09/2016 22:24

I mean an exert

Sunnymeg · 26/09/2016 10:00

raisedby Princess Charlotte was the daughter of George IV. She would have been Queen instead of Victoria if she had lived. She died giving birth after a horrendous sequence of events, which also resulted in the death of the child as well . The birth was going wrong and none of the Doctors had the courage to make a decision that might have saved her life. Hence why she is referred to as poor Charlotte. This tragedy would have been at the forefront of peoples minds during Victoria's numerous pregnancies

specialsubject · 26/09/2016 10:01

I was also a bit concerned at what she had to do ten times....

This Albert is really gormless. The real prince was anything but. The guy seems only to have one expression!

raisedbyguineapigs · 26/09/2016 10:18

Thanks Sunny So basically, for Victoria to be Queen, George iv, his daughter, the Duke of York and the Duke of Kent all had to die. That's quite a run of bad luck!

QueenSpartacusOfTheAndals · 26/09/2016 10:40

Until she died, Princess Charlotte was also the only grandchild of George III. After her death, the country was treated to the spectacle of her middle-aged uncles all giving up their mistresses and scrambling to get married and produce heirs asap.

raisedbyguineapigs · 26/09/2016 10:53

Blimey! What a shower! Just goes to show what a lottery having a monarchy is! Maybe we should go completely Matrilineal. I'd rather go Queen, Princess Anne, Zara than what we have to look forward to!

Clawdy · 26/09/2016 11:03

That sounds really interesting raisedbyguineapigs. I always think Princess Anne looks very like Victoria - that stern profile.

ButteredToastAndStrawberryJam · 26/09/2016 13:47

I'd say he's deep and sensitive not gormless.
