What about his other 11 brothers and sisters? I wonder how many are still alive... I get the impression the last two are the youngest and the only ones left.

I think Kate has had a rough life and has probably learned to be a bit detached for fear of rejection. Adopted twice by age 10 is bound to have taken and emotional toll.
