Nadal had to appeal to be allowed to go- even though he is the number one Spanish player. Will be great to see him back.

I do hope Djok and his wife haven't split . They've been together so long and I like Jelena. Sad. But if he's been playing away...

Shock

He's RAFA!! How very dare they?! Shock

Raahh · 19/07/2016 07:23

Space I know! and he's the flag bearer too!Grin

Well, Toronto is looking thin on the ground, Federer, Murray and now Rafa have all pulled out. As well as Ferrer and Gasquet, amongst others Leaves it very open for Djok.

So many players have pulled out of Rio too, citing the zika virus, not wanting to lose out on points or prize money (??!) or tournament conflicts. In the case of Tomic and Kyrgios, I think the main reason is they have behaved so badly, that the Aussie Olympic committee would rather they stayed away anyway.

The points argument is an odd one- they get 750 points for winning, iirc OK, so, it's a one-off and drops the following year (not 4 years later) but it's still points.

It will make people question (not for the first time) why tennis is even in the Olympics, since it isn't the pinnacle of the sport, the way it is for almost all the other athletes in various events. This makes them look less committed. In fact I read one of them had said as much- that he hadn't spent 4 years training for this, it didn't matter. (paraphrasing- might even have been Tomic, but am not sure).

I feel for the Toronto events organisers- three of the biggest names out is a big blow.

Come on Raonic! Grin

Bad news. Cilic and Goran have called it quits.

BeckerLleytonNever · 25/07/2016 16:38

yay! well done \kopnta (have to type that name carfelully, sorry, ive broken my finger and camt tyupe properly. hope you understand me.

good year for britosh tennis eh/? Tennis.

Im sads too about the cilic/goran spleit.

Raahh · 26/07/2016 20:29

Oh no, Becker- get well soon.

Unlike Federer, who is not going to be playing at all for the rest of 2016.

And I've just read that Rafa may pull out of the singles in Rio, and just play doubles, as his wrist still isn't 100% Sad

This year really is feeling like the end of an era.

SpaceUnicorn · 26/07/2016 20:43
Sad

I'll be gutted if Rafa has to pull out of the singles. I wonder how he'll take to doubles? Has he ever played doubles competitively? There must be a huge mindset shift in going from being a lone warrior making all of the decisions to being part of a two-person team.

Raahh · 26/07/2016 20:54

He's played a lot of doubles, and won tournaments, but he doesn't usually play in slams these days.

I really hope he plays. Sad

SpaceUnicorn · 26/07/2016 21:37

He's played a lot of doubles, and won tournaments

I didn't know that, thanks for the info Smile

Raahh · 26/07/2016 21:52

Space- I think he plays in small-ish tournaments to get more match practice. Iirc his last tournament win was Doha last year- he didn't do well in the singles, he might have even gone out first round.

DramaAlpaca · 26/07/2016 22:29

I caught a bit of Toronto today. Djok was playing doubles. I've never seen him play doubles before. He lost, btw.

Raahh · 27/07/2016 23:08

Now that we don't have Sky Sports, I can't watch much any more, so am back to refreshing score pages.

I can, however, watch 'French Tractor Pulling' if I so wish Grin

BeckerLleytonNever · 28/07/2016 16:31

Thanks Raah. Ive got a smaller dressing on the finger now so my typing should be a a BIT better -or should I say becker Grin.

the only reason I like tennis in the Olympic is they show it on 'normal' tv, im missing all the hard court stuff too as I font get sky spors or BT.and theres nothing but usuely shite on tv in the evenings in the summer.

might just start watching celeb BB out of desperation!

poor Fedster, hope its not the beginning of the end, I don't know, should he carry on and go out on a high or fade away slowly? same with the Raf.

and Rogers cup with so many optiong out for the Olympics, its a bit 'traitor' IMO. If I was Andy Id concentrate on the doubles this year with his bro for a gold, hes already got it in singles. and mixed if someone plays with Watson/Konta.

hope one of the girls win a medals too. Tennis.

this time of year best thing to look forwad to is the US open as it marks the end of this bloody hot weather summer! (im a autumn/winter person). plus they show it on eurospoert which I do get.

Raahh · 28/07/2016 20:48

I've been reading on the Rafa feed on FB that he's been practicing with Murray, at his home I think. I am worried about his wrist. Having seen what happened to Del Potro, part of me wishes he could have gone out on a high. I think it's still there, and mentally he''s stronger this year- but the body is getting knackered, and battered. he can knacker me anytime though .Grin

I like watching tennis at the Olympics- any chance to watch tennis on proper telly is great. But it's not really a tournament of the best players, when half are injured, or pulling out. It's like the 100 metres without half the top runners. And I do feel it's false, when it's not the main event of their year, or career even. Some might argue it is, but I wouldn't believe themGrin

I won't argue if Rafa wins, though. Grin

Raahh · 28/07/2016 20:50

Definitely would love Watson or Konta to win something. I felt sorry for Watson last time, as she had previously partnered Murray in mixed at an event, but it was Robson who partnered him at the Olympics. And played one of her best matches, I think. But Heather deserves her chance.

CremeEggThief · 28/07/2016 23:20

I was so looking forward to Fed and Hingis playing mixed doubles at the Olympics. I am wondering if Fed will come back from this, or is this the end for him? Will his ranking be protected if he's out for a long spell? I can't see him coming back, if he drops out of the top ten. I have wondered if this would be his last year for a couple of years , as getting the gold medal in singles was one of his career goals. It really does feel like the end of an era in men's tennis.SadSadSad

BeckerLleytonNever · 01/08/2016 16:13

Therell always be end of eras though, Crème.

Ive felt sad when the Edberg/Becker era ended, then the Casal/Sanchez- Leach/Pugh era ended etc etc etc.

Always wonder who the next superstars will be.

and as much as I cant satnd Serena tthat will be an end of an era when she and venus end.

Upside is though they all paly in the invitation doubles and that's better than the main draw!

Raahh · 02/08/2016 21:35

Bloody Hell!Angry

Stan is now out of Rio with injury.

Why don't they just hand Djok the medal now, and save time?
I think only half the top 10 men are playing, and of course there is a question mark still over Rafa. He's be practicing today without strapping though.

After their practices last week, it was nice to see Andy and Kim on Rafa's yacht last week. Wish I could visit Rafa on his yacht. Without Andy though. Grin

BeckerLleytonNever · 04/08/2016 16:18

Didn't know andy and Raf were such good friends! Alright for some eh?

Glad Andys carrying the flag for GB.

Bryans not playing for family priority and health (Zika) issues.

Im not the Feds biggest fan exactly but its sad he wont be there.

Looking forward to seeing all threetennis players who've made it there though -except Novak. totes gone off him for so many reasons.

Raahh · 06/08/2016 06:39

Didn't stay awake to see the opening ceremony, but lovely pictures of Rafa on Fb, carrying the Spanish flag, with a massive grin . And a nice pic of Ferrer too.

Murray managed to carry the flag without maiming anyone ( unlike the night before when he nearly took off Princess Anne's head) Grin

Raahh · 07/08/2016 18:30

Del Potro was stuck in a lift for 40 minutes when the power went off! Poor, potato. He's playing Djok in the first round, which is pretty pants.

DramaAlpaca · 07/08/2016 20:37

Convincing wins for both Andy & Rafa in the first round.

Rafa looks so pleased to be back Smile

Raahh · 07/08/2016 20:47

i'm finding the red button, and the scores online really rubbish to follow. So I keep missing things.

Vamos Rafa! didn't get to see it, but I'm glad he's through the first round. it will be a tough tournament, with so little match play behind him. But tbh, I think (judging by his grin on Friday) he's just thrilled to be there. Ferrer through as well, which is great.

I watched the women's cycling road race. My legs are aching just watching, and a Dutch woman who was leading had a horrible crash (but her team mate went on to win the race).
