(After our antenatal thread became somewhat hijacked with talk of Doctor Who)

Hello,

My name's (usually) MsMoss and I've been a Doctor Who Geek for over twenty years now. I grew up with McCoy, stood by it through its years in the wilderness and now watch, proud but slightly bemused, as it is no longer shameful to admit you're a fan.

Anyone else with me? You love the new series but don't want the old to be forgotten?

Join me, stand up and be counted!

They mainly do Jon Pertwee! My in-laws kindly taped them all for me when they were repeated in the mid-90s. I think they know people want to see the old ones - at least, people aged 30-45 who are prepared to be up at 6.15 or set the video - but a lot of the B&Ws just don't exist any more. 100+ episodes I believe.

Let's be honest, though, 7-part Jon Pertwee epics were designed to be watched an episode at a time, not in a huge movie-size chunk.

I'll be interested to see if you think "The Ambassadors of DEATH!" makes any sense. (You'll see why I call it that after the titles!)

As for Sophie Aldred, well... it was a social function... I was there in a professional capacity!

3rdTriMossTer · 12/01/2007 22:07

Don't think I'll be able to watch it right until the end... I've a driving lesson at nine and as you say, they're marathons the JP ones!

Would ask for more DVDs for my 30th but lo is due just beforehand so I imagine I'm more likely to get babygros and nappies.

Hmm a social function, you were there in a professional capacity? Are you like, an actor or something?

Anyway it is well past my bed time and I am getting up for 715 tomorrow of course so good night all!!!

I'm in Cumbria but thanks anyway, will get round to checking out the library!

3rdTriMossTer -Its your birthday therefore your presents not babies
Have you been to the exhibition at Spaceport? We went last year the kids loved it but dd2 was scared of the cyberman!

foxabout2pop · 13/01/2007 08:16

So no one or their kids collects Dr Who cards then????

MsMoss - thanks for that link; all I can say is PHWWOARRR!

3rdTriMossTer · 13/01/2007 08:42

Foxy, surely there must be some people on here who collect the cards? I suppose you could put a notice in the "wanted" bit?

Nikki I couldn't afford to go and also I didn't really have any one to go with would have looked a bit odd wandering around on my tod!! Dh's mate went though and took his dd, she loved it but he was a bit disappointed, though there'd be more there.

OP posts:
nikkie · 13/01/2007 19:30

There was a thread in swaps a while ago about the cards.

Spaceport was ok but think there is supposed to be more at the Cardiff one and some older stuff at Blackpool.

foxabout2pop · 13/01/2007 20:57

Oooh thanks you two [trots off to try and find that thread]...

3rdTriMossTer · 14/01/2007 10:14

So did you watch UK Gold yesterday morning then? I got up at seven o'clock and then came downstairs, dh had been out the night before and had crashed onto the couch (he meant well, hadn't wanted to wake me up).

I turned on the telly; cue a pained expression and whispered "can you turn that down a notch? no, turn it down more, no mnore my head hurts...."

Gave up in the end. Anyway I came back from my driving lesson and there was dh sat on the couch.

"Oh, you should have seen this one, it was great, you'd have loved it!"

Anyway on comes Doomsday and we get:

"Oh god no not more bloody David Tennant I'm surprised he manages to squeeze his giant ego into the Tardis even with all that space."

Grrrr.... never mind! Did you watch it, was it good?

Edam · 14/01/2007 10:31

Another Whovian here - dh too. My mother got addicted to the very first episodes and used to make sure we were all on the sofa on Saturday night. Only remember my dad watching when Leila was a companion, for obvious reasons... Ds is now into the old William Hartnell episodes, calls him the white doctor as it's in b&w.

Quintessential Who has to be Tom Baker, surely? I vaguely remember Pertwee but Tom Baker was kind of 'my' doctor growing up. Have a prized photo of dh meeting him, aged six, wearing a blue anorak and looking VERY serious (dh, not Baker, obv). And once bumped into someone who had played a Silurian at a car boot sale. How sad are we to have been impressed?

At the grand old age of 30 have to admit I am still shit-scared of cybermen. Dh has to hold my hand very tight when they come on. Worse than Daleks IMO. We once went to a Dr Who exhibition at MOMI and I had to back away from the cybermen costumes (the animatronic one made me yelp). Couldn't bear to turn my back on them!

Soooo happy that Dr Who is back and think Tennant is fab. Dh and I sobbed when Rose died - phoned my mum who NEVER cries and she admitted she had too. Bless.

Oh, and most embarrassing bit of merchandise has to be the Dalek bubble bath I got dh for Christmas, surely?

nikkie · 14/01/2007 18:57

I recorded it and haven't watched it yet.

We did watch |Doomsday again and all sat in tears, First time we watched it dd2 said "but the Dr loves her " and it reduced me to tears

pinkandsparkly · 14/01/2007 19:06

Am a new who fan, used to watch the old series as a child but it used to freak me out a bit. I am a massive David Tennant fan and fancy his cute little arse off. Wonder if Sophia Myles realises just how many women fancy her boyfriend!

Loved DT's chemistry with Billie Piper and will miss Rose but am keen to see what Martha will be like. Didn't realise there were so many who-fan-mumsnetters!

Edam · 14/01/2007 19:08

Apologies for rambling post btw, just excited to discover there are other MN addicts!

3rdTriMossTer · 14/01/2007 20:37

Hello Edam / Pinkandsparkly, you're no longer alone!!

When Rose "died" I was in tears too, I also thought it was really cruel to have the ending twice, iyswim.

DT is gorgeous isn't he? Oooh especially with his specs on... mmmm!

Edam where did you get dalek bubble bath? I want some!!

I am really curious as to how they're going to play the Doctor / Martha thing, after how successful (sp?) it was with Rose. Can't wait now!!

OP posts:
foxabout2pop · 14/01/2007 20:48

I hope Martha has a bit of spark to her and isn't just a pretty face. I really liked Rose's character and the whole chav angle, she was great.

Cybermen are presumably based on nazis aren't they? I find them really creepy, watching them march along like the Luftwaffer (mega sp??)

Thanks for the tips on the swaps, have found the thread and DS is going to post his cards on there

nikkie · 14/01/2007 21:08

MArtha looks like she is more assertive than Rose from the trailers.

Just found out there are new figures out-clockwork droids, space pig, empty child , should I buy them now and save for a b'day?(none til Sept though )

Ripeberry · 14/01/2007 21:21

Back in 1992 me and my brother went to a doctor who evening at a hotel in Telford and it was 48 hours of non-stop Dr Who, Blakes 7 and Star Trek.
Different rooms were set up and you could watch video's all night if you wanted to.
The next day there was a question and answer session with John Pertwee and they had the baddie from Blake 7 (Servilan?).
The best bit was later in the day, getting to hold some props and climb into a dalek!
Don't get in if you're claustrophobic.
Really difficult to move until you get some momentum, very hot also!
I've not been to many conventions since meeting my DH as he's not really into SF unless its Red Drawf.

foxabout2pop · 14/01/2007 21:25

Nikki - R they for your birthday?

nikkie · 14/01/2007 22:27

Mines not til Nov .dd2 is next in Sept thought I can save them for treats.

nikkie · 14/01/2007 22:28

Also Autons !

nikkie · 14/01/2007 22:35

Next Sat is INFERNO at 5 past 6 AM

3rdTriMossTer · 15/01/2007 06:35

Oooh Inferno that's the one where they go into the parallel world, I have seen it before but years ago.

Six fifteen... think that may be finished in time for nine before my driving lesson... I really need to get sky plus! (Or a video recorder!)

OP posts:
3rdTriMossTer · 15/01/2007 06:40

Ripeberry that sounds like you had a great time! And you met Servalan too? She was a brill baddie! Jacqueline Pearce was in The Two Doctors as well wasn't she, the one with Patrick Troughton and Colin Baker.

My dh doesn't mind classic who, but 'cos I fancy DT he really doesn't like it much now. Occasionally he will grudgingly admit that he has liked an episode.

Can't imagine him ever doing anything like accompaning me to a convention though! I think that will have to wait until I can use my dc / dcs as an excuse!

OP posts:
nikkie · 15/01/2007 20:28

Just book later driving lessons

3rdTriMossTer · 16/01/2007 06:40

I think dh would go mad, he's been nagging me to learn to drive for about the last five years! He'd only see it as another excuse not to do it...

Hey guess what I got a belated prezzie from a friend the other day...

Doctor Who Top Trumps! Brill!

OP posts:
UnquietDad · 16/01/2007 09:01

You'd think the Slitheen would be best at Top Trumps.
