Just saw the trailer for a new series of this - can't wait! Smile

I think she was thinking about how to talk to him about his dad & mum (find the language), and also how she could protect him from it all. From what other people would know or guess or think. Furthermore how she could protect him from TLR.

Ryans also a constant reminder of Becky and TLR - that must be hard to not think about.

theliverpoolone · 15/03/2016 22:12

Whether her daughter had been abused by her dad (Catherine's ex-husband) and that's why she went off the rails and then killed herself after Ryan was born - maybe Hmm

southeastdweller · 15/03/2016 22:12

Yes I think Catherine was watching Ryan who is also the child of a monster and thinking about what may lie ahead for him.

I agree. Loved the subtlety of that final scene.

pigeonpoo · 15/03/2016 22:15

The writer is brilliant... And the actors... It's rare it all seems equal

FarrowandBallAche · 15/03/2016 22:15

I think it was more than just what lay ahead for him in the future. It was a very troubled look, as if something had just dawned on her.

It's not like TLR is new to her. She knows what he's like. Why would she now suddenly worry how Ryan was going to turn out...

NoelHeadbands · 15/03/2016 22:16

SL is an awesome actress. I welled up when her 'holding up' Alison turned into a hug and she read her her rights

Lottapianos · 15/03/2016 22:18

Same Noel - she looked so heartbroken for Alison Sad

NoelHeadbands · 15/03/2016 22:19

Why would she now suddenly worry how Ryan was going to turn out...

Because she just had dealings with another child of a sex offender who had gone on to sexually assault and murder I guess. Kind of brings home what may be in the genes

MorrisZapp · 15/03/2016 22:21

I'm stunned by that finale. Absolutely none of it went how I thought it would.

Every character and actor is simply superb. None of it is overwrought, despite the dizzying drama.

Seeing the clues fall and the penny drop amongst John's colleagues was agony. His face showed so much pain.

Frances, that sad little woman. Catherine felt sorry for her, of course she did.

That's what makes Happy Valley different to all the 'detectives on prime time telly' . The humanity.

FarrowandBallAche · 15/03/2016 22:22

Yes that's true Noel.

mirage937 · 15/03/2016 22:23

I'm sure in series 2 she had an fling with ex husband and seemed more than happy to be around him so I take it she didn't know ?

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 15/03/2016 22:23

Ryan's getting older, wants independence and is keen to see the best in his Dad despite knowing Catherine and he himself could've died.

Wouldn't we all worry about a kid like Ryan?

mirage937 · 15/03/2016 22:23

*series 1

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 15/03/2016 22:26

Catherine did shag her ex in series 1 despite him being married to his second Wife. Dh , at the time, said that he thought Becky had been abused by her Dad.

bornwithaplasticspoon · 15/03/2016 22:27

I want Catherine to be my friend. She is one of the most loving and compassionate characters I've ever seen on TV. I will miss her on Tuesday nights.

NoelHeadbands · 15/03/2016 22:30

I actually live in Happy Valley

It's so weird to see the end of my road, and the police station, and the rail station and Tesco's on the telly Grin

NigellasGuest · 15/03/2016 22:34

I enjoyed tonight's ep more than any of the others. Loved how the ladies on the station platform reacted when PC Plod fell flat on his face - and SL saying "handbrake"!

Line of Duty is coming back - hooray!!

sassymuffin · 15/03/2016 22:34

I think Catherine fully understood and was frightened by the parallel between her and Alison's life. Both raising a child they love and hate born from an aberration because "what else could she do". Both terrified that the child would find out the truth, and the realisation that the more she tries to shield Ryan from the truth the more she will isolate him like Daryl. Most of the village know he is TLR's son, so as he grows older he too will probably be bullied and treated as an outcast/pariah.

Catherine realised no matter how difficult she had to find "the language" to tell Ryan the truth as that may be the only thing that might truly protect him from becoming his fathers son. The monster that Daryl became warned her that the same could happen to Ryan.

The final look that Sarah Lancashire gave coupled with the music was spine chilling.

NoelHeadbands · 15/03/2016 22:36

Oh sassy you put that so well

Cooroo · 15/03/2016 22:37

Fantastic. Loved Catherine and Frances, Catherine and John, Catherine and Daryl's mum. Kind of glad I was wrong about Daryl being innocent - terrible to live with having shot your child but even worse if it had turned out to be in error! Brilliant tv.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 15/03/2016 22:40

Catherine is just the best character, and best acting. She's just so motherly at the same time as being a switched-on police officer. Fantastic viewing is all I can say.

I absolutely love that it wasn't too over-actiony (for want of a better word) just really really amazing TV, with excellent writing, acting and characterisation. I loved the very end with the happy family walking through the country - and her wondering what of TLR might come out in Ryan. Just heart-wrenching.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 15/03/2016 22:42

Oh, and yes humorous too! I was laughing and then gasped when he chucked himself off the bridge.

FarrowandBallAche · 15/03/2016 22:44

Oh no I screamed when John fell back! Couldn't watch the tv actually. And then when Catherine slumped down on the ground with one leg under her. Such good acting.

PseudoBadger · 15/03/2016 22:48

Perfectly understated and knowing finale - they could've gone sensational but didn't (take note Archers SWs an ordinary tale of country folk )
I loved how John had to talk himself down...

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 15/03/2016 22:49

Just to be clear, I was laughing at the "handbrake!" and then the bloke copper falling over on the platform.

Then I was just in awe of the acting at the bit on bridge- and Catherine just being so amazing, even when she's out of her depth with the whole suicide-talking-down. Then I proper gasped when he threw himself off - just wasn't expecting it.
