This Sunday (17th) at 8pm on BBC1.

I enjoyed the Christmas special - it was good to see Delia back, and I think there's going to be a nice romance with Tom and Barbara Smile

The - it looks like we are going to get a thalidomide story.

it was so gripping tonight ! bloody love this show

FATEdestiny · 21/02/2016 21:33

Proper big tears tonight, this series is so harrowing!

ThoughtfulPenny · 21/02/2016 21:45

Tonight's episode was horrific. Very well done though. I really don't want this series to ever end!

Girlfriend36 · 21/02/2016 21:46

Grim tonight, I think i'm traumatised!

Unbelievable what people went through due to unplanned pregnancies, what with tonights episode and the teacher one I am just unbelievably grateful things are different now!

AnneEyhtMeyer · 21/02/2016 21:51

Glad to see Sr Evangeline is back next week.

I can't stop wondering who all the other nuns are at compline. Are they not midwives too? And why aren't they ever allowed to eat?

ladybird69 · 21/02/2016 21:52

I was determined not to cry tonight! fat chance, such great story lines and fantastic acting.

jellyjiggles · 21/02/2016 21:56

Tonight's broke me Sad

Tableandchairs1234 · 21/02/2016 21:58

Amazing acting all round. Brilliant.

NotEnoughTime · 21/02/2016 22:20

I honestly think this is the best series on TV at the moment.

I think they should show it in every secondary school in the country.

MagratsFlyawayHair · 21/02/2016 22:45

I watched delayed and read some of this thread in advance. I was pleased to be pre warned. What an excellent, if heart wrenching, episode.

Clawdy · 21/02/2016 23:23

I did think the attack storyline was a bit gratuitous. Not happy with watching that, although Cynthia's acting was so good.

Behooven · 21/02/2016 23:44

Did the womb go back in? It was painful to watch that scene.

Lj8893 · 21/02/2016 23:49

Yes it went back in.

IdaJones · 22/02/2016 00:40

This series is really hammering home how good it is we don't have all that shame about getting pregnant outside marriage nowadays.
I wonder what the procedure was that the locum suggested be done before pulling on the cord and whether it would have helped the afterbirth come out ok.
I love Nurse Crane. The actress was brill in East is East too. I love how glam the three young midwives are too.

IdaJones · 22/02/2016 00:46

The concealed pregnancy/shame about pregnancy outside marriage made me think about the story of Ann Lovett in the 80s that i heard about on mumsnet. She died giving birth alone after a concealed pregnancy. Another story that makes me very glad we've moved on now.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 22/02/2016 07:40

Thanks Moln, that explains it.

And I definitely agree that this programme makes you happy we have moved so far forward as a society.

SoupDragon · 22/02/2016 08:08

We had a brief power cut right in the middle of the girl's labour scene. It came back on when she came out of surgery.

Optimist1 · 22/02/2016 08:24

In the midst of last night's horror and emotion was the puzzle about Sister Monica Joan's fasting. Any ideas what that might be about?

ppeatfruit · 22/02/2016 08:43

OMG Iam still wrung out after that episode. That girl who plays the nun who was attacked is an AMAZING actress. I was sobbing. (I don't usually actually sob Grin ).

Maybe Sister Monica is on Lent?

Sad to think that in some cultures there is still that terrible shame about pregnancy OOW.

IdaJones · 22/02/2016 09:23

I thought maybe Sister Monica is very ill and can't eat?

Bellini12 · 22/02/2016 09:24

I'm a little confused. If the womb came out, does that mean the daughter would have had to have a hysterectomy? Were they implying that she wouldn't be able to have anymore children so she should keep this baby boy?
That scene really made me squirm!

SoupDragon · 22/02/2016 09:29

Having googled, they can put it back in. Of course, I don't know if that was possible in the 1960's too.

I think they would have included the fact that her baby was the only one she would ever have if she had had to have a hysterectomy wouldn't they?

Lj8893 · 22/02/2016 09:47

It can be put back in manually which is what Trixie was doing I think, but she would have needed to go to theatre to check for internal damage etc. doubt she would have had a hysterectomy.

IAmAPaleontologist · 22/02/2016 10:49

Just caught up. Knew it was going to be inverted uterus when she was told to pull. Eeek!

I suppose the attack story was highlighting changing society, there was a lot in the books and earlier episodes about how their uniform got them respect and protection everywhere they went, they never had to be afraid but now they are vulnerable when they go out at night. Cynthia was amazing those scenes, finally showed herself as more than just a quiet little mouse. Caught the guy a little too easily though.

I'm still pissed off at Barbra and Tom Grin. Suppose I'm going to have to accept it though. Kind of liked how Barbara was with PC Plod though when he was trying to be all "don't concern your delicate sensibilities with hookers" and she effectively told him to sod off and that she knew perfectly well what went on think you very much.

How long until patsy and Delilah have to tell their secret though?

Lj8893 · 22/02/2016 10:59

Me too palaeontologist I actually shouted at the TV when he said to pull on the cord.
