Grin Anyone else counting down the days! I actually get nervous thinking about it. I have re watched all series and reading the books to pass the time.

Can't wait to see what they do with Sansa and Tyrion this series. And will we see the hound again and lady stone heart?

In the books Tommen is still playing with a kitten Margery gave him. I think Danaerys is about 13 when she is married off to Kal Drogo - obviously they can't make the characters (having sex) that young on TV.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/05/2015 10:44

At the beginning of the books, Tommen is 7 and by the time he's king he's about 9. So in the books there is absolutely no question that the marriage is unconsummated. His main interest is in his three kittens, a present from Margaery.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/05/2015 10:46

All the children are several years older in GOT than in the books. This is apparently because the producers decided at the outset that it would be utterly unacceptable to show sex scenes involving young teenagers, no matter how historically accurate.

Trills · 17/05/2015 10:49

I think there are legal rules about showing 13 yr olds having sex, even if the actors are over 18...

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 17/05/2015 12:02

The show would have been far less popular if they had made the characters as young as they did. Grrm regrets making them that young actually and when I read the dany/drogo wedding night scene I had to pretend she wasn't meant to be 13 otherwise I would have been too squicked. I read the books with the show ages for characters.

FatWalda · 17/05/2015 12:02

Historically accurate? Hmm Grin

Trills · 17/05/2015 12:21

Thing is, is GRRM has made Dany 17, we'd have wondered why Viserys waited so long before selling her off...

Or I would.

Maybe I'm a horrible person.

limitedperiodonly · 17/05/2015 13:33

You can tell George RR Martin isn't a Daily Mail reader.

That's just full of feral children, fuelled by cheap cider, rutting with each other on playgrounds strewn with broken glass.

I wonder how many housing points a teenage mother would get towards a council flat in Flea Bottom? Wink

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/05/2015 13:57

FatWalda, are you trying to imply GOT/ASOIAF isn't true? Grin

I meant that in that kind of society aristocratic children were married off very young indeed for dynastic reasons, and the marriage would be consummated as soon as they were both sexually mature (biologically speaking). I suspect you knew that, though!

mistymeanour · 17/05/2015 14:07

I read that GRMM held out with licensing GOT until it could be made for adults (even though that meant HBO porno stuff not in the books). He didn't want it to be a kids movie - film companies kept wanting to follow Danerys' story and dump the restand make it a sort of fairytale for young teens.

Ehric I agree - I too had to read them as "older" in certain situations.

FatWalda · 17/05/2015 14:16

No Grin I'm saying that it's not set in our world, so we shouldn't seek to impose historical constraints on it. It's so well realised that it's easy to forget that it's not actually a historical drama. So there's no need to justify apparent anachronisms and the like.

limitedperiodonly · 17/05/2015 14:25

film companies kept wanting to follow Danerys' story and dump the restand make it a sort of fairytale for young teens.

That would have been terrible mistymeanour.

I think cowardice is the reason why Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials didn't go beyond one film.

That and the fact that you had to have read the books to make head or tail of it.

I sat next to a family expecting a great experience, as did I. How wrong we were. It was pretty though.

It seemed from that only the children and their parents had read the books. The grandparents were politely baffled and the others were saying: 'The books are better. Honestly.'

FatWalda · 17/05/2015 15:59

Yes, it was a shame New Line Cinema bottled out of making HDM properly. They were running scared of offending Christians in the US, but many were offended by the books anyway, so by watering it all down they ended up pleasing nobody. They also messed around with the order of events in order to contrive an "upbeat" ending rather than a cliffhanger. What a waste of a terrific cast.

limitedperiodonly · 17/05/2015 16:36

It was a good cast, wasn't it FatWalda?

When I read it I pictured Nicole Kidman as Mrs Coulter. I know others have said she was meant to be dark-haired but I didn't pick that up from the books.

It was also beautifully done but just muddled. Such a shame.

My favourite book is the second one. I hate those smug wheely things in the last one.

Environmentalist bores Wink

Trills · 17/05/2015 16:50

The wheely elephants were a bit smug, now you mention it.

limitedperiodonly · 17/05/2015 17:04

A bit???

FatWalda · 17/05/2015 17:07

Yes, I think PP threw a bit too much in - parts of it were a bit silly.

My mental image of Mrs Coulter was always Kristin Scott Thomas. Coincidentally she was in the film, but only as the voice of one of the daemons.

Cooroo · 17/05/2015 17:28

Since we've gone off topic here, can I share something I know I shouldn't? Just been to have a look at NetMums, prompted by the ridicule on another thread. Was glad to see they were discussing GoT but think I will stay here as this was the level:

" Can not WAIT for game of thrones!! season 4 bring it on
OMG litterly counting down the hours till it starts 2moz night. Not a big TV fan but loooove this. Who with me give me a woop woop xx"

I suppose I'm being sniffy and horrible but ... Shock

limitedperiodonly · 17/05/2015 17:30

Kristin Scott Thomas would have worked beautifully as Mrs Coulter.

Which daemon did she voice?

My favourite characters were Lee Scoresby and Hester. I can't remember who I chose for him but I definitely did and it was someone a bit younger and more dark-haired.

Their story was the best bit of the second book for me.

If I couldn't have my cat Nobby as my daemon, I'd have a hare.

Game of thrones season 5!!!9 sleeps!
Cooroo · 17/05/2015 17:35

Ooh yes to a hare. I read the books to DD and just fell apart when Lee Scoresby died, couldn't get the words out!

limitedperiodonly · 17/05/2015 17:48

Nobby's ears are getting on for hare-like. Definitely bat-like.

Cooroo · 17/05/2015 18:01

They are fine ears. I have a hare but so far it hasn't come to life.

Cooroo · 17/05/2015 18:03

Sorry. Maybe shouldn't have posted the net mum. I'd be mortified if she saw it and was upset!

FatWalda · 17/05/2015 20:42

I suppose the direwolves are a bit like daemons.

SerJorahsSecondChoice · 17/05/2015 22:29

I've often thought so, FatWalda.

Nymeria disappears - Aryas all alone.
Lady killed by Ned at Lannisters' command - Sansa sent off all alone because of his and their actions (ie she's isolated at a very early point.)
Ghost is white and the outsider of the litter - Jon Snow (white and and the wall, which is snowy) is also the outsider.
Shaggy Dog is feral - Rickon is neglected.
Summer and Bran are linked by warging.
Grey Wind fights in battle then is killed, as is Robb.
