Started watching it on Amazon Prime last night, I'm hooked already.

Haven't read the books it's based off, which makes a nice change for me!

Anyone else?

Ostentatious I read the writers didn't want to have the beating scene in the show but the writer of the book insisted. From watching the show I got impression they just wanted to get that bit over with.

Just started watching it - love the scenery - both actual scenery and both frank/Randall and Jamie - the casting is excellent. it's causing a slight addiction - trying to surreptitiously watch before DH gets home from a work trip on sat!

Watched the wedding episode last night. So well written and filmed. The inn was very nice and clean upstairs wasn't it!

I loved the wedding episode, I liked how they did it in flashbacks with the run up and Claire getting drunk etc. However I was a little bit sad they changed where Claire and Frank got married as (iirc) in the book it's the same church as her wedding to Jamie isn't it? I understand they can't keep everything in.

I think the spanking scene is important because it illustrates a key difference between then and now. To Jamie, a beating is normal and acceptable. To all the other men too. A 16yr old being beaten in front of the whole clan is normal. He steps in and takes a beating because to him, it's just a physical, forgettable act. It becomes an opportunity to show massive character growth because he learns that actually it is never just a physical act, he swears fealty to Claire and learns that he loses something of himself in doling out such a brutal punishment. It leads to them becoming equals.

I have just read the first book over two days and am almost dreading how they handle the JF/BJR stuff. The aftermath of it too. It's powerful stuff and terribly difficult to translate to the screen.

I've sped my way through to book 3. I have to admit, at times I'm thinking 'God shut up and get on with the plot' but I'm quite enjoying them.

I think they'll massively tame down the BJR scenes. I can't see how they can do them fully and still be allowed on TV!

ostentatious book 2 made me sob when I read it the first time. I'm half hoping half dreading them making a second series.

I think that the set designs and costumes on the show are really good, too: a lot of attention to detail and historical accuracy.

I agree the costumes are wonderful, whoever did those it feels really high quality

Is the second book good? I agree this is much better than game of thrones, there's just no happiness in that at all.

I love all the books - well except no 7 maybe.

I think 1 and 2 are the best and then they get gradually worse Hmm the most recent one I found very hard to get into. Too much Lord John(?)

Thanks! The tv show is so well done it's actually adding something to the books for me.

I remember liking book 3, Voyager. I won't mention a spoiler, but there is a particularly lovely and compelling section that takes place in Edinburgh. Smile

I have only read the first book and not sure if I will bother with any more. I don't like series that go on and on. I do like the show though. I am interested to see how they do the fBJ /Jamie stuff. Spme of that was very hard to read in the books.

The costumes are great. The designer is married to the show creator. There is a good interview with her here

I loved the first books, and looking forward to Master Raymond's appearance but I'm ashamed to say I speed-read some of the last books (the colonial / militia bits especially) I wanted more of Claire's healing and life, and Jamie's building!

Ah Master Raymond! Does anyone else picture him as Toad of Toad Hall?
