Is anyone else looking forward to this? It is going to be shown on Sunday nights once the present series of 'Call the Midwife' has finished.

I loved the original series even though the story did stray from the books a bit. I wonder how this one will go. I understand Robin Ellis has a bit part in the new version as the Reverend Halse.

Good grief I could actually hear what was being said! I'm old enough to remember but not to have followed the old TV version but this might be good.

Drywhiteplease · 08/03/2015 22:17

How does it compare? I was 11 so all a bit hazy. Read all the books.
Elizabeth was blonde.
Waleggan was darker, and then try replaced him with another actor who was dark haired too.
The servants were exactly the same....all heaving bosoms, messy hair and bad teeth Grin

colleysmill · 08/03/2015 22:18

Well I thoroughly enjoyed that :) mind you I also loved Desperate Romantics which has aidan Turner was in so no surprise really.

It's been a very long time since I read the books so I knew the characters but I've forgotten the story (except the brooding - I remember lots of brooding)

Lovelise · 08/03/2015 22:22

I enjoyed it. The first one is always a little slow as we have to meet the characters and set the plot.

Cornwall looks AMAZING.

I thought Elizabeth was a little 'sweet' I remember her being all posh and up her own arse in the books/original series.

I'm looking forward to the next episodes.

LaComtess · 08/03/2015 22:23

Well. I rather enjoyed that I must say. Liked the soldiery bit in America. Liked the punch up with the family! Yes Cornwall looks beautiful too. Fancy I thought that too especially when they were in the field. Phil Davis's teeth were a work of art for makeup.

Mostly I just thought oooof I don't really know AT from anything except the Hobbit but I do love a dark, brooding, beardy sort who drinks wine mournfully and can hold his own in a fight. So I am in.

Also the Elizabeth actress is just beautiful as is Demelza so I'm totally suspended of disbelief and in for a bit of C18 romance. Exactly what I need for Sundays.

snozzlemaid · 08/03/2015 22:24

Warleggan was always played by Ralph Bates in the 70's version Drywhiteplease.
I loved it. Think all the roles where cast really well. I was unsure about Jud and Prudie at the beginning but liked them more towards the end.

Enormouse · 08/03/2015 22:26

I see the wench contingent is in force, comtess, alibabs, issy, Norah, have I missed anyone?

Drywhiteplease · 08/03/2015 22:29

That's it snozzle. Agree with love about Elizabeth being sweet. She's beautiful though.
Where have I see the Damelza actress before?
I'm totally in....think it's going to be good.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 08/03/2015 22:31

Well I'm too young to remember the original but I love a bit of Aiden Turner, I love gorgeous scenery and I bloody love a good period tele drama so I am definitely in.

Lovelise · 08/03/2015 22:34

I agree Snozzle, although I thought Judd & Prudys various states of slovenliness amusing.

Not sure about George Warleggen. I thought he looked a bit young. He's a real 'hate' character but haven't got that from him yet. It's still early day though.

AmIthatHot · 08/03/2015 22:39

I used to watch the original when I was a wee girl, although I don't think I ever really understood what I was watching, I just know that Robin Ellis was a childhood crush.

But this was excellent, I thought I'd give it a whirl and I'm so glad. Aiden Turner is incredibly handsome

Rhubarb01 · 08/03/2015 22:46

I remember the original but enjoyed this. Thought AT was good. I agree that George Warleggan was quite different in appearance than the original and a bit younger but I reckon there's quite a bit of steely nastiness in him so it'll play out over time. Elizabeth was a bit more aloof in the original and yes it was hard to believe that Demelza would ever be mistaken for a boy - Ross needs glasses! However, it all looked absolutely lovely - so I'll definitely be watching next week.

Dumbledoresgirl · 08/03/2015 22:47

I remember the original intimately as I have it all on videos and it used to be my favourite programme to watch whilst doing an afternoon of ironing.

So... it was very hard for me not to remember the original scenes as each new one was shown tonight. I miss Robin Ellis. I don't think AT, no matter how good he is, and he was good tonight, can ever replace RE in my affections.

I agree with a PP who said Demelza looked too old but gosh she is pretty, isn't she? You can see what Ross will see in her later. I also liked that George Warleggan was played by a handsomer man than originally. I don't want to give the plot away, but it was always hard to see what any woman would see in the original man. Phil Davies is a safe pair of hands for Jud. Prudie seemed a bit too mean. The woman playing Verity is totally wrong - such a pinched, almost distorted face. She is supposed to be a handsome woman. The Cornish acccents I think were ok? good even? What did Cornish people think? I am from Cornish stock but not brought up in Cornwall so I can't be too sure.

All in all, I will keep watching but it has a long way to go before I will stop comparing it with the original.

FancyFancy · 08/03/2015 22:54

Did you miss me out because I embarrassed you mouse? Wink

Bambambini · 08/03/2015 22:56

Very enjoyable for Sunday night fare. AT is very handsome, not sure if too handsome! Never saw the original series but absolutely loved the books. Elizabeth or Warleggan aren't what I expected but hey. Will be watching with interest and might even break out the books again.

snozzlemaid · 08/03/2015 22:56

Cornish accents sounded really good to me, except for Phil Davies' Jud. Not so sure about that one. But maybe I'm just remembering the original series too much. That Jud had the strongest Cornish accent of all.

I definitely dislike George already, I thought he came over as very weasely.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 08/03/2015 22:59

If Demelza looked any younger it would be a bit indecent. She looks fairly young as it is. Might have got away with it in the original series but not now.

snozzlemaid · 08/03/2015 23:02

She is just a child in the books. Not sure how old exactly though. It is some years later they get together.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 08/03/2015 23:23

Oh ok, that's not so bad. Grin

MrsSlocombesPussy · 08/03/2015 23:34

Demelza is 13 in the books. I think the actress who plays her was one of Warwick's daughters in the White Queen a couple of years ago.
If I remember correctly from the books, George Warleggan is supposed to be around the same age as Ross.
As for the accents, I think some of them may have been toned down as it was filmed not long after all the complaints about Jamaica Inn!

Enormouse · 08/03/2015 23:43

No how could I forget you fancy? It wasn't on purpose Smile

Travelledtheworld · 09/03/2015 04:46

Another wench signing in here for more dark and broody men in billowy shirts......

Travelledtheworld · 09/03/2015 06:24

Here is a lovely summary of AT's acting career.
