Is anyone else looking forward to this? It is going to be shown on Sunday nights once the present series of 'Call the Midwife' has finished.

I loved the original series even though the story did stray from the books a bit. I wonder how this one will go. I understand Robin Ellis has a bit part in the new version as the Reverend Halse.

the bad thing comes later, U2

sorry

theconstantvacuumer · 26/04/2015 22:12

After that episode, I cannot see the Very Bad Thing happening.

Was surprised at George's 'declaration' - what does he hope to gain given that Elizabeth is married to Francis? She is too much of a lady to consider divorce/an affair (and let's face it, she has ample grounds for the former given Beaker's recent shenanigans).

The sight of that empty little bed in Ross and Demelza's roomSad

Inkanta · 26/04/2015 22:16

I cannot see that bad thing happening either.

Sallystyle · 26/04/2015 22:17

They have to show the VBT though don't they?

I assume that if they don't a lot of story lines will have to be changed. But he loves his wife!

nannyj · 26/04/2015 22:18

I don't remember him declaring his love in the book like that but so much goes on I may have missed it. Tonight's episode was amazing and so so sad. Brilliant acting too.

Softcookie · 26/04/2015 22:20

His distress at not having provided for the mourners really touched me .

theconstantvacuumer · 26/04/2015 22:22

I think the programme makers have made the conscious decision for Ross to be shown as completely in love with Demelza, which is at odds with the book and previous adaption (from what I can gather from discussion on here). So I really do doubt the VBT will happen.

Izzy24 · 26/04/2015 22:24

Why couldn't the consortium just smelt the Poldark tin at Carneforth?

Surely Ross and the shareholders can sell wherever they like? Why did the tin have to be auctioned?

SirChenjin · 26/04/2015 22:24

Fantastic episode tonight even though he kept his shirt on - brilliant acting from all the cast, and utterly heartbreaking to watch Demelza and Ross grieve for their little girl. Really looking forward to the next series.

theconstantvacuumer · 26/04/2015 22:26

The acting has been superb. I can't believe Francis is American IRL, his English accent is impeccable.

Izzy, I was confused as to why Ross needed to buy copper when he had his own mine full of it!

SirChenjin · 26/04/2015 22:31

I didn't know that he was American - excellent accent. Elizabeth is Icelandic - again, an amazing accent.

Myfanwy81 · 26/04/2015 22:42

I am honestly distraught as a parent seeing the scenes of the loss of little Julia. Aidan Turner and Eleanor Tomlinson were amazing, what brilliant actors. So glad that Ross and Francis reconciled. Cannot believe that Ross was arrested didn't see that coming, so heartbreaking!

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 26/04/2015 22:50

if they don't have the VBT much of the future plot wouldn't work

sorry, guys

The sight of that empty little bed in Ross and Demelza's room

Same here Sad, although it only took another few seconds before I was pondering if they spent a lot of time getting up in the night to put her back in it every time she fell out. DSs were such wrigglers, I can't imagine putting such a young child in a bed rather than a cot.

boogiewoogie · 27/04/2015 00:18

But perhaps they'll change the VBT to a BT? Did they show it in the original series? I understand that it was quite different to the books. I have the Poldark books on my Amazon wish list but I don't know whether I can wait for another two months before my birthday.

Tonight's episode was very well acted. Both leads were superb in their grieving scenes and yes, I cried loads.

Heida Reed who plays Elizabeth did an interview and said that it would be the ultimate cliffhanger.

Izzy24 · 27/04/2015 00:19

What is the VBT?

Inkanta · 27/04/2015 05:10

Beautifully acted.

diddl · 27/04/2015 07:21

Anyone feel kind enough to pm me about the VBT?

Sunnymeg · 27/04/2015 07:39

Have pm'd

Ross also said the 'pickings for all' line. That shocked me a bit, although only Jud heard him, so perhaps that is how they are going to wangle things at the trial.

I thought he said - fill up your bellies!

Softcookie · 27/04/2015 07:50

Woke up still thinking about it. I think it's fair to say that I came for the pecs, I stayed for the UST, and am now forever a fan thanks to the amazing acting of this last epi.

I thought the series was brilliant up to episode 5, sagged a big with 6 & 7, but last night was simply superb - tight script, gorgeous script, very nuanced. We've all been complaining it felt rushed with not enough time for character development - I do think last night it all came together beautifully. Ross's moral ambiguity was firmly established - here's a man who puts his own beliefs ahead of the law and is comfortable with darkness and violence, entirely fitting for a war veteran. He probably craves it, in fact. Here's a man who can be cruel to those he loves but also capable of great tenderness and recognises the limitations of his own heart and his need of others - in fact his words to Demelza on the cliff, about how her generosity put him to shame, where more powerful than his bedside declarations of love. He has finally come to respect her as an equal and in some cases a superior. Shame the price or this was so high for both of them :(

Inkanta · 27/04/2015 07:53

Soft nicely said.
