Is anyone else looking forward to this? It is going to be shown on Sunday nights once the present series of 'Call the Midwife' has finished.

I loved the original series even though the story did stray from the books a bit. I wonder how this one will go. I understand Robin Ellis has a bit part in the new version as the Reverend Halse.

I do think that class plays a much bigger role in Ross and Demelzas relationship than he realises or admits. Demelzas mistakes are immediately attributed to her ignorance and so are fair game - whereas moral faults like Francis's spinelessness and Ross's impulsiveness and rages are kind of their birthright if that makes sense?

On the other hand perhaps because he's so proud and duplicitous and everyone around him so untrustworthy, loyalty in all things has a disproportionate value to him. Demelza so far had proven to be a paragon of devotion and therefore discovering she'd been going behind his back an almost capital sin. That and the fact in his mind she was more of a helpmeet and a plaything than a true equal so he probably felt like an idiot for having a blind spot this big.

Putting aside The Very Bad Thing, this could be the catalyst for their relationship to mature and evolve on a more equal footing... Definitely the end of their honeymoon period.

I feel Ross's character verges between extremes of almost callousness and unexpected tenderness - we saw a lot of the former and only caught a glimpse of the latter at the very end so who knows where the writers are taking him next week. He could go either way imo.

nannyj · 20/04/2015 10:09

Surely the very bad thing doesn't happen yet? In the books it was further on I believe. But I have read on and on book 6 I think and it's so well written that all these questions get answered as it goes along. It's going to be so hard to have nothing to watch on Sunday evenings. :-(

LeprechaunsAndUnicorns · 20/04/2015 11:23

Can someone please pm me what the VBT is? It kept me awake last night wondering Blush Confused

theconstantvacuumer · 20/04/2015 11:34

I will PM you as it's a massive spoiler.

Whatisaweekend · 20/04/2015 12:03

Oooh there's a Very Bad Thing??!! How exciting!! I havent read the books so am totally in the dark.

Am liking Ross less and less - he orders Demelza around like he's still in the army and thinks nothing of helping a wife murderer escape and yet is going to torture his wife for helping Verity (although desperately sorry for the man who said he was now destined for debtors prisons/the poor house, obvs). Constantly grumpy and/or at the bottom of a bottle and never throws her a bone of tenderness or love. He could have given that necklace to her before the ball, for example, instead of bogging off to get drunk whilst it was delivered by some flunky.

Still would, though. Totally hot.

AGirlCalledBoB · 20/04/2015 12:07

I am not really enjoying it as much anymore. Really going off Ross, it's one rule for him and another for others. I love Demelza she is just trying her best yet he is horrible to her most of the time and compares her to Elizabeth. It was years ago-get over it Ross and concentrate on your wife!

Not sure I will be watching the second series.

Softcookie · 20/04/2015 12:09

Right, have just ordered The first 3 books. Should be delivered next Monday (I'm not in the UK) which should take care of the despair I'll feel when it's old over.

Speaking of serious things, did anyone else about at the telly last night for the tragically missed disrobing opportunity when the guards came and he had to pretend to have still been in bed? A bit half-hearted, i thought, to simply untuck it Hmm

Softcookie · 20/04/2015 12:10

"It"= his shirt. Obvs

squoosh · 20/04/2015 12:18

I'm not sure I'll watch the second series either AGirlCalledBob but not because of Ross. I just feel the series still hasn't really taken flight. There was a good episode a few weeks ago but overall it just feels a bit lacking to me, the drama never seems to properly take hold.

I think I enjoy the mining/financial side to the limp love stories and wish they'd focus a bit more on that.

squoosh · 20/04/2015 12:21

I wish the BBC would show the third series of Ripper Street. Now that I love!

theconstantvacuumer · 20/04/2015 12:23

I think Ripper Street will be shown on BBC eventually once it's had a good run on Amazon Prime.

squoosh · 20/04/2015 12:30

I'm waiting impatiently!

FujimotosElixir · 20/04/2015 12:36

whats the very bad thing? someone plz pm x

kelda · 20/04/2015 12:42

Just look up Poldark on the main wiki page for the books, there is a long list of the characters and main points about them, including the very Bad Thing. Do not look it up if you do not want spoilers! Because there are loads of spoilers on the page.

catontherun · 20/04/2015 13:40

I usually watch this on iplayer or catchup but last night's episode doesn't seem to be available on either.

Any ideas why ?

I need a period drama fix tonight (dh is away for the week) as it's turning out to be a crappy day at work.

pinkfrocks · 20/04/2015 14:22

Can someone please explain why it was so terrible to act as the go-between for Verity and her bloke? What else did that lead to that has made Ross so angry? why does it affect the mine? I lost the plot there.

muminhants · 20/04/2015 14:22

The VBT happens in book 4 so presumably will be towards the end of the next series if it covers books 3 and 4. Assuming it's what I think it is. Leads to all manner of trouble in later books anyway.

theconstantvacuumer · 20/04/2015 14:32

Demelza's actions as go between led Francis to believe, mistakenly, it was at Ross's behest. In revenge, and manipulated by George Warleggan, he told George the names of the other investors in the Carnmore Copper Company. Al bar two of the investors banked and were in debt to Warleggsns Bank. George subsequently called in the loans, effectively bankrupting most of the investors, at least one of whom was destined for the poor house or debtors' prison.

IndridCold · 20/04/2015 15:20

I completely agree! It's been brilliantly cast, and looks lovely, but it's just a bit dull. I did think last night that the characters are a bit too one-dimensional.

Millionprammiles · 20/04/2015 16:36

It's dire. And I say that as someone who usually loves a Sunday night period drama.
Low production values, cliched dialogue, hollow characters and am finding the females characters all a bit wet. Actors are doing the best they can but its not helping.

At least Lark Rise to C was (unintentionally) funny.

Drywhiteplease · 20/04/2015 17:16

Has someone mentioned the doll/baby? Wish they'd get rid of that Grin glad it didn't feature last night .

Haven't read whole thread so sorry if it's already been said;

I'm loving it (not as much as GoT,never) great Sunday night fluff, but , apart from the doll I really can't stand Warleggan's uncle, he's overdoing the baddy act.
The mine scenes look as if they've all been shot in the same day.....only 3men seem to work in the mine Shock
But I love Aiden, although agree Ross can be an idiot and even though I read all the books years ago, couldn't remember the VBT, now I've looked and I'm upset.Sad
Will still keep watching and again to make sure on i player on Monday nightsGrin

Softcookie · 20/04/2015 17:18

I dont disagree that it could have been amazing and it's not, but I don't think it's dire. The actors are attractive and talented, the script is dynamic, the scenery gorgeous. It lacks the depth of North and South (to name one that I recently rewatched) but it's definitely captured my imagination. I find that sometimes not filling all the gaps leaves me more passionate about the story rather than the opposite because I have to ask myself questions.

I think if anything it peaked too early #shirtlessscything

Margrethe · 20/04/2015 17:45

As Ross sits at his desk and ticks Demelza off for being "arrogant," and "ignorant," we are suppose to see the irony, right?

MirandaGoshawk · 20/04/2015 18:10

I can't help thinking that Elizabeth must feel she's had a lucky escape not marrying Ross and being mistress in his house instead of Francis's pile and hosting grand balls. I just can't imagine her in Demelza's place, hobnobbing with the staff & making her own pies - she's too hoity-toity.

On a completely different and totally irrelevant note, we went down to Cornwall this week and stayed in a holiday cottage. The housekeeper's name was Demelza Smile I'm guessing that she was born mid-70s.

the possibility of a load of babies being named Julia has been mentioned, but what about Ross and Demelza, or better, Geoffrey Grin

Postchildrenpregranny · 20/04/2015 18:11

There are lots of Very Bad Things if you read the whole series. Reflects the times...life could be nasty, brutish and short
