Is anyone else looking forward to this? It is going to be shown on Sunday nights once the present series of 'Call the Midwife' has finished.

I loved the original series even though the story did stray from the books a bit. I wonder how this one will go. I understand Robin Ellis has a bit part in the new version as the Reverend Halse.

IMO it definitely is the VVBT thing suggested. The language in the book is subtle (it was written in a more repressed refined era) but it's quite clear.

Sazzle41 · 21/04/2015 12:34

In today's Metro, the producer of Poldark on its 'realism' and the shirtless scenes: "Ross is a farmer and you know, Cornwall can be quite hot". Fnar, fnar/smirk.

badRoly · 21/04/2015 12:44

To be fair, I live in Cornwall and it's not unusual to see men wandering around shirtless...

bigbuttons · 21/04/2015 13:33

the problem with this series is it is trying to squeeze in far to much into a short space of time. The characters and plot line don't have time to develop properly.
I remember the original and loved it ( Robin Ellis rocks) and I loved the books.I do feel that if I didn't already know the story then I wouldn't have a clue what was going on

scandip · 21/04/2015 15:28

By going on about the 'very bad thing' I think you are in spoiler territory. I haven't read the books and I have a good idea of what it will be, esp since someone said it is something mumsnetters will be outraged by. Not sure I wanted to know that thanks.

Drywhiteplease · 21/04/2015 16:07

Funny how after all the hype about Aiden, Damelza seems to be stealing the show.

Drywhiteplease · 21/04/2015 16:08

Also think the series is "based" on the books, things might change hopeful

squoosh · 21/04/2015 16:09

Aiden's definitely still the draw for me!

Myfanwy81 · 21/04/2015 16:41

Aidan still the draw for me too! Really hope that the BBC do make this a longer series next time though so the plot and characters are more rounded out. Would prefer my license fee to cover longer drama seriers rather than some of the crap that is on at times!

Mama1980 · 21/04/2015 16:50

I read the books years ago and fell in love with demelza, Ross is very pretty in this adaptation but agree demelza steals the show. (As if you read interviews winston graham gave she is meant to)
The racing through the plot is really spoiling it for me though, so many nuances and sweet little scenes are being missed. They needed 6 2 hour episodes at least.
Not even sure I'll bother with the last episode.

PeppermintPasty · 21/04/2015 17:00

Apologies Scandip, that was I Blush I will shut up now.

Softcookie · 21/04/2015 17:37

I like to imagine things and fill in the blanks. Like, I don't need them to spell out for me that Ross is a sex god in the sack and that by being with a woman not of his class he can probably do all sorts of tricks that a proper lady wouldn't put up with...

Softcookie · 21/04/2015 17:37

But ahem, yes, they are deffo rushing it :(

KatKyn · 21/04/2015 18:42

I haven't read the books but I feel like I've been rushed through what could have been a great first series, perhaps culminating in Verity's marriage being thwarted the first time. Each episode covers so much ground that I don't have time to think.
It's still a good series but because the characters haven't had time to really develop properly, I thought that the clincher scene at the end between Demelza and Ross wasn't realistic, I didn't get the depth of feeling that I'm sure was in the books. It just felt under-proofed.

nannyj · 21/04/2015 19:11

From what I remember of the book Ross doesn't tell demelza that she's responsible for the copper company going bankrupt but I may be wrong. I'm pleased with the series but agree it would have been nice to have more episodes to make it less rushed.

Softcookie · 21/04/2015 19:41

underproofed is a perfect definition. Still tastes delicious, but the texture is disappointing.

MsJupiter · 21/04/2015 20:01

They had to race through the plot bits in order to have enough time for the scything and horsey horsey bits.

scandip · 21/04/2015 20:02

Sorry for being uppitty Peppermint Pasty. Surely they won't include it. It's a step too far for it's gentle Sunday night drama slot. Although his defence of a wife murderer means that for me Poldark's hero status is rapidly diminishing already. He's a bit of a knob really isn't he?

RosesareSublime · 21/04/2015 20:06

DD's been telling everyone that mummy's got a new boyfriend that's on TV and he's even in a book!

hilarious Grin

RosesareSublime · 21/04/2015 20:13

ND I do like Demelza, but feel that she has got a pretty raw deal so far in the show, again iirc from the books, she taught herself to read and write, to run a house, to read and play music, to become more of an equal in the relationship
She also had lots of country knowledge, medicine, animal husbandry, cookery skills....really barely touched upon so far

Wowzers, indeed she has got a raw deal, how much more fascinating it would be to see her reveal these talents and see Poldark fall more and more in love with her.

Drywhiteplease · 21/04/2015 20:20

Aiden is a big draw here too.....just wish he'd smile, has an amazing smile IRL .......

Myfanwy81 · 21/04/2015 21:12

Yes, found his blind defence of a wife murderer a bit hard to take as well . more smiles for Ross would be nice though next weeks episode looks rather dark

PeppermintPasty · 21/04/2015 21:12

You weren't being uppity, I was being annoying Grin

I agree about the rushing of it. There are so many books, it would have been nice to see a bit more character development at a slower pace.

I wonder how they will handle all the "bad" bits too. The Beeb clearly wants to win our hearts and minds with this series, so I was wondering if they would gloss over the bits where Ross is shown in the worst light. I dunno.

Myfanwy81 · 21/04/2015 21:48

Hope they don't gloss over things to be honest as I suppose dramas are more interesting if the dark side of as character is shown nas well as the light.

PerpetualStudent · 22/04/2015 08:24

Ok, just watched latest episode on catch up and have to chime crash in because I'm fuming. Ross acts like a dick and blames Demelza for ruining the copper smelting enterprise, but HE WAS THE ONE SAT IN THE PUB WITH THE SECRET PAPERS SPREAD ALL OVER THE TABLE!!?

He's got a lot of shirtless scything to do to make up for this...
