Is anyone else looking forward to this? It is going to be shown on Sunday nights once the present series of 'Call the Midwife' has finished.

I loved the original series even though the story did stray from the books a bit. I wonder how this one will go. I understand Robin Ellis has a bit part in the new version as the Reverend Halse.

I like the actors and think the books and plot are maybe just a bit crap. All these women snapping. Don't see why the captain's drunken ?accidental wife killing was worse than the gormless guy and his "woops I've broken her" wife killing.
If all these posh blokes in the consortium weren't living beyond their means then George's bank couldn't bankrupt them all. If they are well thought of surely there will be a run on George's bank as word gets round he's petty and vindictive. Not that anyone seems to put money in to George's bank he just seems to lend it out.
It's all very far fetched and silly.

Softcookie · 20/04/2015 19:02

They're all desperate for credit though aren't they, as mining is so capital intensive. I have a feeling the Warleggans are not exactly in the cooperative savings business and I don't even want to know the kind of interest they're charging!

And while we're at it the market is way too fragmented - what they want is a good ole monopoly to push copper prices up and get some scale on investment... Which is probably the warleggans endgame

IndridCold · 20/04/2015 19:03

I think you might be right about the books. I tried reading the first one a few years ago and gave up.

WhoreGasm · 20/04/2015 19:28

I have very patiently watched the last 3 episodes and nary a shirtless bit of scything or neck kissing to be seen.

WTAF is going on? I've had to try and pay actual attention to the plot and everything, in order to keep my brain occupied [grumpy]

PeppermintPasty · 20/04/2015 20:32

My recollection of the books (read when I was about 15, my mum had them all) is that they were a bit clunky, and would be considered a bit old fashioned now. Contrast that with some Du Maurier which I re-read recently, which I found to be well written IMVHO. Although it's a matter of personal preference.

Similar recollection of the old series-although we were all into it as a family, I watched a bit the other day and honestly, it was like an episode of Acorn Antiques-on-sea.

Softcookie · 20/04/2015 21:20

I watched a few clips on YouTube and I was like REALLY? A nation fell in love with Angharhad Rees with that hair? And Robin Ennis was not exactly a hunk was he.

Lol. My daughters will probs watch Aidan Turner 30 years from now and still would recoil in horror.

OscarWinningActress · 20/04/2015 21:27

Why does Ross never interact with adorable baby Julia? In one scene last night, she was sitting on Demelza's lap cooing at him and he completely ignored her. He is a bit miserable :(

boogiewoogie · 20/04/2015 21:47

Poor Demelza looked so heartbroken last night. I haven't read the books but I think the VBT has already been mentioned either on this thread or the other one in Chat. Judging by next week's preview, Demelza is going to suffer some form of tragedy. Haven't seen the original series either but watched an interview with Aidan Turner, Eleanor Tomlinson and Robin Ellis where they showed a clip from the original. I think they changed it so that it wasn't so bad but still not good iyswim.

I can't stand Francis. He is so stupid not to realise that George is manipulating him and that he has used him to his advantage. Not only that, he made some private joke to Elizabeth right in front of him too.

Things are going to get worse before they get better I believe.

ocelot41 · 20/04/2015 21:48

Ross being superior and unfair. Francis is a twunt. Demelza and Verity should set up house together - end of.

Softcookie · 20/04/2015 21:59

I love the sound of a Demelza and Verity lesbian household!!!

Myfanwy81 · 20/04/2015 22:55

Have been following this thread and meaning to post for ages. I thought last night's episode was v. dramatic but wish the BBC could've made this maybe a 10 episode series as it all gets a bit fast and furious and it feels like too much is being squeezed in to one episode a lot of the time.

Must confess I started watching as have had a 'thing' for AT since watching Being Human Wink and he is a perfect Ross. To be fair that all the actors have been well chosen for this and doing a great job but just seems a bit rushed! I agree with comments up-thread that the scene with Mark and Keren when he 'accidently' kills her was a bit far fetched! Was also irritated by Ross going out of his way to give Mark his boat and creeping down to the beach when he'd just been visited by the soldiers, and knew they were on the lookout for Mark escaping via the sea, seemed a bit stupid to me! Hmm

So wished that Ross had duffed up whiny Francis though, he bloody deserved it for being such a snivelling, pathetic oik the whole series! Felt for Demelza being talked down by both Francis and Ross, she is a great character and agree that her and Verity are a great partnership, but being biased would have to keep brooding Ross in my bedchamber if I were her despite the seemingly endless sermonising from him, for the blatantly obvious reason that he is evidently dynamite in the sack! Grin

Pixel · 20/04/2015 23:00

I can't get over how good the accents are
I read that the actors refused to 'do' accents because they were worried about a repeat of Jamaica Inn when no one could understand a word that was said!

Can I ask why nobody has thought to try another bank? There must be others surely even if they have to travel a bit further afield. Why does everyone bank with the Warleggans if they know they are not trustworthy?
(or perhaps they are the only bankers in the whole of Cornwall/southern England in which case I'll shut up).

2rebecca · 20/04/2015 23:39

Agree if you're a well connected toff then surely if one bank calls in your debts you would look for another to bail you out, especially when your copper consortium are doing well. Makes no sense.

Pixel · 20/04/2015 23:45

Yes you'd at least try, or sell a few acres or borrow from rich rellies or something. You wouldn't shrug your shoulders and toddle off to the poorhouse.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 20/04/2015 23:50

There is at least one other bank - Pascoe's, that Ross banks with. But there have been a few scenes with him where Ross needs cash & none is forthcoming so I'm guessing Warleggans' bank has a lot more dosh swimming around, & they probably lend it out at very favourable rates to draw the minnows in & have the power over them.

I'm sure some aspects of the plot are a bit unrealistic, & certainly some of the people are just caricatures, but it makes the story more gripping than it would be otherwise?

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 20/04/2015 23:52

At the start Sir Francis Bassett shoots himself for shame when Warleggan calls his debts in & he has to close his mine Sad

CrabbyTheCrabster · 21/04/2015 00:33

Have come over to this thread hoping for more info re the VBT as there seem to be comflicting opinions online as to whether the books describe it a definitely a VBT or whether the situation was more nuanced. Would greatly appreciate a pm if any of the book readers have an opinion on that.

Travelledtheworld · 21/04/2015 03:59

Team Demelza here, I Think she is beautiful and feisty.

Thanks Clemency. I think I'll have to read the books and make my own mind up then. Smile

PeppermintPasty · 21/04/2015 11:13

Put it this way, the VBT is going to make Ross very unpopular on Mumsnet.

There is however, a VTT too (very tragic thing), and at a guess from next week's trail, it happens then.
