Is anyone else looking forward to this? It is going to be shown on Sunday nights once the present series of 'Call the Midwife' has finished.

I loved the original series even though the story did stray from the books a bit. I wonder how this one will go. I understand Robin Ellis has a bit part in the new version as the Reverend Halse.

While we're on the topic of papers.... What is it with Ross and his manbag? He brings that leather briefcase everywhere :)

Makes him look like an accountant on his way to work (with all due respect to accountants!)

And lol how he works in the pub like a proto- Carrie Bradshaw. I half expect him to be drinking a frappuccino :)

The actual accountant, Warleggan? Never seen him with as much as a sheet of paper in his hands!

TulipOHare · 22/04/2015 09:26

but HE WAS THE ONE SAT IN THE PUB WITH THE SECRET PAPERS SPREAD ALL OVER THE TABLE!!?

I thought exactly this! Take some bloody responsibility, man!

PerpetualStudent · 22/04/2015 11:42

I know, right?! Then throwing a sulk & being all "I don't know if I can forgive you" - I kept imagining Demelza starting a MN thread in relationships "Help - have made a massive mistake & ruined DH's business & family!" It'd be LTBs all round!

PeppermintPasty · 22/04/2015 11:45

But then Demelza would probably post a pic of his abs and we'd all suddenly shout DON'T LTB!!

LucasNorthsTwiglets · 22/04/2015 14:55

Why was it Demelza's fault about the smelting thing going to pot? I didn't quite get that bit...

snozzlemaid · 22/04/2015 16:16

Because Demelza arranged for Verity and captain Blamey to get together again, which annoyed Francis who thought that Ross must have been behind it. Francis was mad with Ross so told George Warleggan all of the Carnmore shareholders names when Ross had asked him to keep it secret. Warleggan then called in all of the debts the shareholders had with his bank, so they were all out of money to support the venture.

WhoreGasm · 22/04/2015 21:58

Are we meant to actually care about Ross's morals, ethics and personality then?

Drywhiteplease · 22/04/2015 22:09

Yes Whore Hmm because we really want to like him......hope he turns out good in the end read all books in my teens, can't remember much

WhoreGasm · 22/04/2015 22:13

Oh, right.

Just me then, who had zero interest in his intellect or moral compass.

I'll get me coat.

Sazzle41 · 22/04/2015 22:38

WhoreGasm .. there is intellect, a plot and a 'moral compass' ? (Yawn/dies of boredom). Just get your shirt off and let me objectify you for an hour. Thats what Sunday evening telly is all about. Its more disturbing to me that off screen he rocks the badly dressed geeky younger brother look. Who knew that under that was serious male totty.

WhoreGasm · 23/04/2015 08:58

Oh thank God for that. A kindred spirit.

Aiden Turner was put on God's green Earth to be objectified and to spend the majority of his time with his shirt off and scything.

To every man there is a purpose under Heaven etc [pious]

LucasNorthsTwiglets · 23/04/2015 09:20

Thanks, Snozzle! It's still not fair that Ross thought it was Demelza's fault though - surely it's not her fault that Francis decided to be an arse about it?!

TulipOHare · 23/04/2015 09:41

Of the three - Ross, Francis, Demelza - she is the least at fault.

  1. Ross was careless with his papers despite knowing the importance of keeping the names secret.
  1. Francis actively gave the names out despite knowing the importance of the secret, in order to hurt Ross.
  1. Demelza tried to help a friend find happiness, which had the completely unintentional and unforseeable result of the names being given out (only possible because of points 1 and 2 above!)

He is scapegoating her and he had better see sense and apologise and love her as she deserves or I shall be very cross indeed.

Extremely nervous about this Very Bad Thing you are all hinting at Hmm but will not Google as hate spoilers with the fire of a thousand suns!

Sunnymeg · 23/04/2015 10:28

I thought Francis knew the names of the Carnemore members because he was at the original meeting, where he declined to become involved. I didn't think it had anything to do with Ross' paperwork.

mistymeanour · 23/04/2015 11:10

Sunnymeg - I thought that too. I too am outraged on Demelza's behalf. Ross puts everyone's liberty and future at risk by helping a wife murderer with no discussion but Demelza is somehow responsible for endangering things by helping Verity. It is Francis who is at fault not Demelza - he has known those shareholders all his life and put them in the poor house because of his desire for revenge and self loathing.

I wish Demelza would call Ross on it.

CrabbyTheCrabster · 23/04/2015 12:59

You're right Sunny Francis knew from the start because he was involved but chose not to be part of it.

Sorry about the spoilers Tulip. Blush It was dropped in casually on the other thread and then I couldn't help but want to know more. I don't think it will come up until next series at the very earliest and there's no telling how the series will interpret/stick to the books anyway. I think the original series did quite a few things differently anyway and I'm sure this series will too.

VelvetGreen · 23/04/2015 15:19

I haven't posted for ages - i hinted at the VBT about a month ago, and have sat on my hands since as i didn't want to inadvertently let a spoiler slip. Since it's cropped up again i just wanted to say that there is some ambiguity about it in the book (though not much) so the bbc could skirt around it if they wanted but it would be a bit of a cop out.

I hate the Mark and Keren story. I've never really got what their story adds to the plot. We already know Ross doesn't have any qualms about going against the law, and it spoils Dwight's character somewhat. I suppose Keren could be a device to enhance Demelza's virtues, but she is written so one dimensionally, even more so in this adaptation, that it doesn't really work.

I do like this version but i'm still not really loving it. I have warmed to ET's Demelza since she's stopped with the gurning yokel thing, but (sorry) i don't find AT masterful enough! When Robin Ellis threatened to whip Jud you could see him doing it - i sadly just can't see it with this Ross.

Drywhiteplease · 23/04/2015 21:15

Velvet I disagree, new Ross seems pretty masterful to me ....did you see how quickly he flipped that card cheat onto the table? punched Damelza's father and took out her brothers? Aiden is divine.
Looking forward to hearing Damelza on Chris Evans Radio 2 tomorrow morning.

Softcookie · 24/04/2015 07:02

The thought of Aidan turner with a whip will sustain me trough this Friday :)

VelvetGreen · 24/04/2015 11:05

Well, there are some scenarios where i may be convinced :).

I have no problem with him as brooding hero, but there's a more violent, ruthless streak in the character that i'm just not really getting. The fight with Demelza's dad was very staged and a bit theatrical - i knew i was watching acting rather than worrying for anyone's wellbeing (imho obviously).

With the game of cards, in the book Ross picks Sampson up, carries him out of the french windows, down the steps into the garden, then throws him in the river (only the tide is out). I wonder if they didn't include it in this version as it would look a bit......err.......silly?

I realise that this may not be a popular opinion!

wowfudge · 24/04/2015 18:50

I hope they make a second series - it really has been something to look forward to on a Sunday night.

Francis is probably the biggest, most pompous prat of a character I've seen in a while. He has so much going for him, but is a total idiot.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 24/04/2015 22:26

wowfudge, they are definitely making a second series Smile

Profile of Aidan Turner on R4

Lots of lovely Irish accents talking about him Smile

snozzlemaid · 26/04/2015 04:04

Thanks for that. It's really interesting.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 26/04/2015 11:53

I find his voice does more for me than his torso - I love his voice Grin
