eddiemair - do you:

  1. insist that you absolutely have to watch a show, you never miss it, and nobody else has a say.
  2. then talk the entire way through said show without pausing for breath.
  3. then ask the other people, who didn't even want to watch the damn thing in the first place, to explain to you what went on because you weren't listening....

then, yes, I am indeed your granddaughter. Hello nan.

eddiemairswife · 20/11/2014 18:18

Ah, perhaps not, because even if I concentrate hard and don't talk I still need explanations.

eddiemairswife · 20/11/2014 18:21

It doesn't help when most good dramas are filmed in semi-darkness and the actors speak in whispers. I then have to resort to subtitles!

EmilyGilmore · 20/11/2014 19:11

True, I missed a lot from this week's episode because of the mumbling and poor sound recording. Subtitles next week I think. Don't the producers watch it before transmission?

fredfredsausagehead1 · 20/11/2014 19:30

Ians wife went off with the child to replace their lost child and Ian joined them when he could go 'missing', they're all intertwined somehow...

HugeFurryKnittingBalls · 20/11/2014 19:40

I'm now wishing that I'd ever been able to watch a programme with my nan but sadly they both carked it long before I was able. My mum was annoying to watch tv with, never followed things properly because she insisted on emptying the dishwasher at some crucial point, does that count?

popmimiboo · 20/11/2014 19:46

Late to the thread but loving this series.
One thing that disappointed me in the first episode is the whole charity shop business because I have lived in France for 15 years and charity shops just do not exist here!! Any other French mumsnetters feel free to correct me if they live in a more charitable part of France Wink

Anyway, I also suspected Ian was Vincent's father but am not sure now.

In no particular order, I need to know:

Why did Vincent move to the UK?
What did French policeman, Zihane find?
Who is the sinister, grey haired cleaning man?
What was Zihane's secret and why did he end up in prison?
Why did liason man have his son with him in Chalons in 2006?
How did the lovely Baptiste's daughter end up a junkie? And is this at all significant?

Roll on next Tuesday!

OttiliaVonBCup · 20/11/2014 19:48

Huge my DH does the dishwasher/loo/getting a drink thing.
Then he comes in and stars asking stupidquestions.

My mum insists she's seen the programme before - if it's a film and she tells me what will happen to prove it, or if it's a series she'll start telling me who is who and what they did two episodes ago.

I could happily watch just with the dog for company.

HugeFurryKnittingBalls · 20/11/2014 19:50

Liaison man said that he was on holiday in the area when the news broke which was why he was assigned to the case and had his son with him (no mention of son's mother that I can remember). Sounds a bit spurious to me it hardly costs a kings ransom to send the right person to northern france to do the job.

OttiliaVonBCup · 20/11/2014 19:52

Mark Liaison officer said in the first episode he was on holiday somewhere close so got called to assist.
That's why he had his child. Not sure if they mentioned a wife though.

OttiliaVonBCup · 20/11/2014 19:53

Xposted.

LittleBairn · 20/11/2014 20:27

I like the theory that it was Ian and his wife who took Ollie, but you would think they would try and replace their DD with another girl?
I wonder if their 'stolen' child was actually Vincent who was handed over by Ian for whatever reason who then wants to fix his mistake so takes Ollie.

I've never really take much notice of James Nesbit as an actor but he's been brilliant in this, it can be so hard to tell what he's thinking unless he wants the audience to know.
Baptise is rather nice too.

BelleateSebastian · 20/11/2014 20:56

I've got it byjove!!

Botoxed mother was having an affair with hospice doctor, she was pregnant by him and lost the baby, he was devastated and threatened to rumble her to Nesbitt (and grass her dad up for running a columbian drug cartel) ... she like REALLY loves Nesbitt and her dad so agrees to let hospice dude have Olleh in return for not splitting her up with Nesbitt/rumbling her df.

... Olleh is actually quite happy living in Watford with Hospice dude, is told Nesbitt isnt really his dad (and is an alchy) and bebotoxed mother visits every weekend (Olleh has been told she now works for Emirates as an air hostess monday-friday)

All the other characters are actually just red herrings to spin it out for the 8 fucking episodes.

or ... hospice dude could be the real dad and all the above could apply? I reckon I'm onit Wink Grin Wink Grin

Ohmygrood · 20/11/2014 21:01

I think the garage will be involved somehow. Possibly somebody who works there tips off the criminal gang in the flats about unsuspecting tourists who are likely to be carrying cash.
I agree that Mark's son being so similar to Ollie can't be a coincidence either.

Ohmygrood · 20/11/2014 21:07

lol Belleate I hope you're right!

meandjulio · 20/11/2014 21:09

Really loving the story but tend to end each episode feeling wiped out. I do feel Emily is a real missed opportunity though - you only have to think what Jodie Whittaker was like in Broadchurch to feel like Frances O'Connor is a bit of a blank space where some acting should be. Possibly though she was asked to be more blank because everyone is a suspect in this; I never suspected Jodie Whittaker for a minute.

diddl · 21/11/2014 08:25

Well I'm still watching even though I said I wouldn't Hmm
JN still spoiling it for me!

I'm just so distracted by his hair I thinkBlush

edamsavestheday · 21/11/2014 12:00

YY Emily is a real cipher. I don't know whether she's meant to be portraying a mother who has to shut down emotionally to survive, but it's not working for me.

ginnycreeper5 · 21/11/2014 12:06

Why did liaison man have his son with him in Chalons in 2006?

I found that odd too. If you had been given the job of being liaison officer to a family that have lost their little boy, what on earth would posses you to take your own little boy with you (who looks the same and is a similar age).
It would be incredibly insensitive and upsetting to the parents and would be rubbing salt into their wounds.
You just wouldn't do it.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 21/11/2014 12:24

I thought it was explained as he "happened" to be on holiday there at the same time and, as luck would have it, was a liaison officer, so could help out. Not sure where his son ended up going, though. BTW, I loved a PP spelling of Olleh - that really nailed how JN was shouting for him at the pool.

EmilyGilmore · 21/11/2014 12:39

a blank space where some acting should be

Ouch Grin

ginnycreeper5 · 21/11/2014 12:46

Avon, I hadn't realised he was already on holiday.
Bit of a coincendence that? The place they broke down in wasn't exactly a tourist spot either.
The plot thickens!

AvonCallingBarksdale · 21/11/2014 12:50

Yeah, Emily and Tony were in a car and Emily got the car to stop as she ran after a little boy, who she thought was Ollie. Turned out to be Mark policeman and his little boy. Think it was then a "oh, you're Emily Hughes, whose son has gone missing, aren't you", kind of conversation.

susiedaisy · 21/11/2014 16:43

I think the mother is just a wooden actress to be honest she has the same expression no matter what's going on, shame really as all the others actors seem to be good
