The scenes in Bath were all filmed in May.
But yes funeral was s but weird. I put it down to
A- they all thought it was Molly and Smurf that were together
B- he's still her superior officer
C- I

BrodiesBabe · 27/10/2014 09:02

Okay, this is going to sound strange but I haven't rewatched all of ep5 in order yet. (Probably due to feasting on eps1-4 in Afghan). I've rewatched scenes but have got confused about the order. Is the restaurant scene before or after Smurf's funeral?

Sorry. Feeling thick and a bit confused.

BrodiesBabe · 27/10/2014 09:05

Also, what is the twitter feed with all the photos and letters on? I can't find it.

Well done, icemist ... Like you said, it would be rude to unfollow. Wink

ihearttc · 27/10/2014 09:14

Ah I hadn't seen the photo before so it was a lovely surprise.

The restaurant scene is before Smurfs funeral which is why the scene at the funeral is so weird and completely out of place.

Oh yes icemist would definitely be rude to unfollow her now...

BrodiesBabe the letters are on the BBC twitter page. Im completely new to Twitter-only joined because of this so can't work out how to link to them. It looks like a photo but its 4 separate pictures all joined together with writing on them. There is one to Molly from her mum, one from Molly to her mum, one to Smurf and one from CJ where he talks about blisters.

ihearttc · 27/10/2014 09:16

And now I can't find it either...grr!! Will keep looking.

BrodiesBabe · 27/10/2014 09:23

Thanks, iheart. I think I partly couldn't remember clearly as their behaviour in that scene is so odd compared to what has gone before. But then, I guess the shock of the death and funeral is such that everyone is treading on eggshells as they don't know what to think or feel or how the other person will react.

The more I think about it, the more I think the final 'Miss me?' scene was added later, or at least as an afterthought late in filming. I did wonder before I saw ep 5 if they had considered two separate endings, but I imagine Smurf's death Sad would have been pretty much set in stone early on.

ihearttc · 27/10/2014 09:26

Right found it but being a complete technophobe I can't do a link.

Its on Iwan Rheon's Twitter page but it was tweeted by BBC thats why I assumed it was on the BBC page.

Yep I agree they'd be treading on eggshells etc but I sort of assumed it would push CJ and Molly more together rather than being so cold towards each other. Unless its because of what happened to Smurf they don't want to rub everyone's nose in it so to speak.

furcoatbigknickers · 27/10/2014 09:34

I watched the episodes I could get on iplayer last night including the funeral. Yes, he is cold but I put that down to stiff upper lip, acting appropriatley ... Also deliberate so we are hanging on for are they/aren't they? Also grief, they were both fond of Smurf.

furcoatbigknickers · 27/10/2014 09:35

Ive tried to convert a few of my mates, no one is playing ball.Sad

Rhubarb01 · 27/10/2014 09:39

Back to the weird funeral scene. As icemist says if everyone thought that Smurf and Molly were an item either girlfriend/boyfriend or at least very close friends including Smurf's mum which was emphasised by the fact that Molly was in the family funeral car, he died while she was with him and she was planning to go to Las Vegas with him, I guess CJ might look a bit distant. You probably would if you were in love with someone and all that had happened! Perhaps we were supposed to think that he's still not sure in spite of what's previously happened between them whether Molly will "Come back to me". He certainly looks a bit strained and hurt in that scene.

PassTheCremeEggs · 27/10/2014 10:03

I put it down to a combination of not wanting to show any connection between them in front of others, particularly smurf's family but also the rest of the platoon because it's still all secret, but also CJ's grief at Smurf dying - don't forget that's the second time he's read that bit of under milk wood at a funeral - and both men were under his command. And this time he will feel some added responsibility for it. I think it's well played - anything else would have been inappropriate I reckon.

Brook10 · 27/10/2014 10:24

Hi, I've never posted on Mumsnet before, but like Rhubarb have been following this thread for a few days, and wanted to say how much I have been enjoying your discussions and observations re:OUR Girl and CJ in particular.

It is such a relief to find I am not the only one slightly obsessed- am staying up late to watch reruns and the kids are getting fed up of the soundtrack ( the only reason I haven't got photos on my phone is that I haven't worked out how to!). Has felt like a bit of guilty secret until now, as haven't found anyone similarly afflicted, despite my repeated attempts to drop it casually into conversation at the school gates/ work.

Just found lots of great behind the scenes photos posted yesterday on BBC One Facebook, ( although not many of CJ) - do you think the fact they're still promoting the series should make us more optimistic for a second series?

Also agree the funeral scene between CJ and Molly was a bit odd - would have thought after Bath they would have been in contact even if they hadn't actually seen each other, and he would know she'd decided to go back to Afghan

klj78 · 27/10/2014 11:02

I think all the promoting is due to the DVD coming out, but I would like to think it's because they will do another series. We all need to keep tweeting the BBC!

Richtea19 · 27/10/2014 11:10

Welcome Rhubard and brooke10, I came to MN too through finding this thread only a week ago!

Very interesting reading. I haven't watched as much of Ep5 (other than the restaurant scene and very nearly kiss). But there is something to be said about the possibility of the last scene after the credits "miss me" that could of been filmed after they finished filming. Both Molly and CJ actually look different. I know they don't have tans, but CJs hair looks longer and a little more curly. Molly looks rounder in the face, back to normal eating pattern?

Think I will have to tweet Tony Grounds and ask this very important question!

I was surprised with the funeral scene, considering they had spend the night together in Bath and he had declared his love to her you would of expected more interaction between them, even a risky hand hold or touch (just dreaming now!). I suppose we don't know how long it was since Bath. Smurf died and I expect it would have taken a while to arrange the funeral and maybe Molly was spending her time in Wales with Smurfs mum. Do you think she still has Smurfs mums ring?

I still think it's strange that they didn't keep in contact after their night of passion. Which makes me think the Miss Me scene was an afterthought once all the bbc viewing figures went up.

Back to watching Ep 5 all the way through, rather than just the restaurant scene!
I just love homework now I'm grown up!

lyndie · 27/10/2014 11:10

Welcome newcomers!

I'm on Dylan Thomas today! I didn't realise the boathouse at Langharne was real but it looks beautiful! Lovely attention to detail.

I think the gap between decompression and Smurf dying is quite short? After the final mission a day or 2 tidying up, 2 weeks decompression - then how much leave would you get after a tour? I don't think Molly and CJ have had enough time together to make any decisions and Molly was still fairly fragged. She might have only been at home a few days, unless anyone has spotted otherwise.

PassTheCremeEggs · 27/10/2014 11:38

Decompression in Cyprus is usually just a 24 hour stopover on the way home. Post tour leave is usually 4 weeks for a six month tour.

I think those who have said the end scene was filmed later are right, it makes more sense that way.

Richtea19 · 27/10/2014 11:55

I've gone back to Blister scene !
Here's a little school holiday treat for you!

Our Girl
ihearttc · 27/10/2014 12:50

I so wish we could ask Tony Grounds all the questions we want answers to!

cherin · 27/10/2014 12:50

I think at the funeral they both were in deep shock. The scene of "if there's anything that I can do for you" comes after Smurf's mum leaves crying with the flag. Last thing you'd feel like in that moment would be to kiss or touch a secret lover, in public ;-)
(He's still a captain and all the platoon was nearby)
You can just see the anguish he feels (he surely remembers the jokes about moving to Newport/wrapping in cotton wool he exchanged with Smurf!)

If the last sene was an after thought (and thanks god I read here about the scene, or I'd have missed it!), well I am happy it was added. I keep on thinking she was mightly lucky that it wasn't CJ's mum opening the door (in tailleur, pearl earrings and proper upper class coiffure ;-)

ihearttc · 27/10/2014 13:07

Is anyone here actually any good at using Twitter? I wonder if we actually asked TG a specific question rather than the endless "Is there going to be another series?" (which obviously I want to know as well!) if we'd get an answer.

I have never tweeted anyone and don't think me doing it for the first time for such an important reason is a very good idea...knowing me I will mess it up!

Haven't MN had people on here before to do a question and answer type thing? Is there no way of asking MNHQ to try and get hold of him to do one?

Or am I completely clutching at straws and its a stupid idea!?

icemist · 27/10/2014 13:46

I'll tweet him. Am I asking if the 'missed me' scene was filmed at later date ie a few weeks ago?

ihearttc · 27/10/2014 14:00

Does everyone else think it's the right question to ask as well? Don't want to step on anyone's toes so to speak. I just think he will have loads of tweets asking for another series that if he realises we are asking a proper question we might get an actual answer!

Alternatively point him in the direction of this thread and get to answer all our questions lol!!

icemist · 27/10/2014 14:02

Will do ??

icemist · 27/10/2014 14:05

Done- mentioned mumsnet too lol! Will report back later.

Have decided I'm definitely writing to ask for autograph on one of my photos:) just need to sound sane and not some desperate mum in my letter/note

icemist · 27/10/2014 14:18

He replied!!
@TonyGrounds: @irishgirl74 Nope. All done at the same time. Well we filmed
Bath after 'Afghan' but long time before transmission. If that makes sense. TG

Any more questions lol
