I believe it's back on Sunday. Hurray!

I really hope though that they focus more on Edith and less on Mary and her boring, all look the samey, suitors.

Edith's baby is Marigold at the farm who she keeps going to see & has just been told that she must stop for a while.

R4roger · 08/10/2014 08:32

oh, is she actually her baby? but the farmers dont know, they just know there were landed with her? where did i read she died. that is a bit obvious isnt it.

diddl · 08/10/2014 08:36

I think that she told them that it's a friend's baby.

Is she also Godmother so that she had a reason to keep going there?

But it's pissing the wife off now.

I'm not sure if the farmer knows that Marigold is hers.

PrivateJourney · 08/10/2014 08:46

Farmer didn't know but he guessed and for a while he was encouraging the visits but now his wife thinks he fancies Edith, although doesn't seem to suspect that the baby could be his. Which she isn't but I bet that's what MN would be telling farmer's wife Grin

I don't understand how all seeing Granny hasn't spotted this one. Granny knew about the baby, knew Edith had suggested the farmer's family took the child in but Granny vetoed that and baby was adopted by someone else (in Switzerland?) Now farmer's family have a new adopted child and Edith is spending loads of time there....

diddl · 08/10/2014 08:52

Maybe granny doesn't know how much time edith spends there or that they have an adopted child?

PrivateJourney · 08/10/2014 08:53

But Granny knows everything !

R4roger · 08/10/2014 09:13

poor Edith, she will go mad

diddl · 08/10/2014 09:17

"But Granny knows everything !"

but would she know that some local farmers have adopted a child??

She ruled that the baby be adopted in Switzerland-would it occur to her that she was disobeyed??

Yes, I think that Edith will have a breakdown.

maybe do a runner with Marigold?

KristinaM · 08/10/2014 10:35

Yes indeed Patois, I have a selection of silk hand embroidered gowns sewn by my ladies maid. But I never crease them from DTD with DH, who sleeps in his own room most of the time.

When he's not amusing himself in the cupboard with one of the housemaids

KristinaM · 08/10/2014 10:40

I don't think granny is interested in the private lives of staff , let alone tenant farmers. Remember she said her butler was only allowed a private life on his day off

Each time I watch downton, I shout at the TV because part of the plot are just so impossible. But I keep on watching it , I can't help it .....

PrivateJourney · 08/10/2014 10:45

No, I don't think Granny would have any interest in the Farmer's life at all but I think she would know her GD was spending a lot of time with the new adopted child of a local farmer (seeing as the rest of the family do) and put 2 and 2 together.

This series seems worse than ever for implausible plots

OnlyLovers · 08/10/2014 11:53

The Russian refugees being aristos is pretty feasible, in fact –loads of them had to flee the revolution/civil war.

Edith will either run off with Marigold or the wife will somehow get to see her family and complain about her (possibly thinking/saying that she's having an affair with her husband?) and the cat will be out of the bag.

Where is the Mary and Gillingham storyline going? I can't figure it out. Will he turn out to be a bounder, or did she just discover that he's not a very good shag and wants out?

Anyone else see him in Weekend, playing quite explicit gay sex scenes? Can never quite NOT remember all that when I watch him, despite the Downton threads and manners. Grin

diddl · 08/10/2014 12:10

Gillingham has always seemed quite nice so far.

feel sorry for him that mary now doesn't want marry him.

And now she's about to run into Charles blake again and gfriend/fiancee??

but doubtless she'll be dumped if mary shows the slightest interestHmm

So maybe gillingham will tell blake to put him off?

But Blake won't care that the wonderful mary has slept with his mate to try him out!Grin

i mean they are all so forward thinking-even Matthew didn't care about the dead Turk-Edith might as well just 'fess up about Marigold!!

Vintagejazz · 08/10/2014 13:55

But this is Edith. Edith is the family loser, who never does anything right, who gets jilted at altars and falls in love with guys who disappear. She's just a sad case, living in Mary's shadow and will be forced to give her child up for adoption if Robert finds out, because there is no way stupid Edith could possibly raise a child.

The fact that she's actually intelligent, attractive, popular and a hell of a lot more interesting than Mary seems to have escaped his notice!

millimat · 08/10/2014 14:08

Who knows about Edith having a child?

PrivateJourney · 08/10/2014 14:10

Just Granny and the Aunt in London who went to Switzerland with her, I think. Oh and the Farmer.

MindReader · 08/10/2014 14:33

I think Farmer's Wife will be certain Mary and Farmer are having affair and say 'something' maybe to Mrs Housekeeper (memory fail!) who will tell Anna, who will feel bound to tell Mary, who will blab to family under guise of 'concern for Edith'. Then it will all come out.

OR, Farmer's Wife will make Farmer take tenancy elsewhere and Edith will be distraught at prospect of losing contact with Marigold and will tell Cora the truth.

I think Edith will run off with Marigold and it will have an unhappy end.
OR family think the above so likely they agree to take Marigold in to avoid the above.

Mary will be upduffed and so will have to marry BoringInBedGillingham.
Then she will be bored for 60 years. Poor Mary but she can be such a bitch to Edith I don't feel especially sorry for her.

Bates will escape prison but he and Anna will separate under strain.

Isobel will end up with the Doctor, but not before breaking Lord Merton's heart and causing no end of huffing from Granny.

Tom will just go to America and Marigold will take Sybbie's place in family affections.

diddl · 08/10/2014 14:44

"Then she will be bored for 60 years."

Can but hopeBlushGrin

LittleBearPad · 08/10/2014 15:08

She generally looks bored anyway so how will anyone tell Grin

qazxc · 08/10/2014 15:48

Haven't Mrs Hughes and Anna guessed by now that Edith has a child? After finding that baby photo and Lady Edith having gone on that extensive trip (that has to be code for having baby in secret in those days, same as there were a lot of speedy marriages/"premature" babies). They also must know about the interest that Edith shows in some random (that would be the right age and is adopted) child and her running off in tears after talking to the adoptive father of the child.

eddiemairswife · 08/10/2014 18:35

I doubt that Mrs. Hughes would indulge in any gossip even to Anna, though I'm surprised no-one seems to comment on the visits as they are very frequent and obvious. Surely Mary can put two and two together and connect the trip with the child, particularly as Edith hasn't shown much interest in her motherless niece, who would be the natural choice to lavish her affections on.

tribpot · 08/10/2014 20:24

I wonder how much the indoor servants would know about the comings and goings out of the house? There would have been an awful lot of work for them to do, even a lady's maid like Anna. It's not like she chucks all of Mary's clothes in the machine on a spin cycle and puts her feet up with a good book.

LittleBearPad · 08/10/2014 21:23

It's amazing that Edith kept the pregnancy a secret given she'd have had a lady's maid to dress her.

tribpot · 08/10/2014 21:41

Never mind dressing, someone would have had to wash her sanitary towels. And note their absence!

KristinaM · 09/10/2014 08:21

What happened to Edith's job as a journalist? And didn't she have power of attorney for her editor BF who went missing in Germany ? So she should be in London , busy running the newspaper .

I'm not sure if anyone actually cared about the aristocracy shagging the help. It was only getting found out, getting pregnant by them or running off with them that was frowned upon.

Tom would have been paid off to return to Ireland and baby Sybil would have been brought up as Mary's child. This stuff about letting tom ex chauffeur run the estate is just nonsense
