To be fair Edith sees more of marigold than pickles and Mary see of theirs.

Mary seems to assume she can just tell Gillingham she's not going to marry him and he'll go away (though she's not sure when she's going to tell him). Maybe he won't take 'no' for an answer?

I feel like this storyline is recycled too. The whole "marry me or I'll tell the world you're a harlot" thing.

To be fair to Mary, if sex with Tony involved using this then no wonder she's gone off him!
