I can't decide! MG for me veered between really good and really annoying. Loved her clothes tho. Is she in a relationship with the nanny?

OP posts:

That Hilary Clinton- she's a wrong 'un as well!

The Palestinians will own half of Stein because the phase 3 contract is worth so much and Stein are legally obliged to go ahead. - half of their capital will be tied up in stage 3.

Still betting on Monica being the 3rd child and heir (if Nessa is dead though we know she isn't). Cant decide if Monica is an Israeli or a Palestinian.

Just love Hugh though

Apollinare · 15/08/2014 20:07

My DH has just pointed out that now both Nessa and Ephra are supposedly out of the picture, Jalal El-Amin can produce Kassim, reveal the "secret" of his birth and become prince- regent of Stein. - or maybe the dialysis man will reappear!

LuckySaint · 15/08/2014 20:19

Who would be Kassim's next of kin if Nessa was dead?
Wound it be dialysis man if she'd not made a will/official thing concerning him?

LuckySaint · 15/08/2014 20:20

Would it be!

Apollinare · 15/08/2014 21:00

YES! yes it would be Dialysis man! or would Ephras children have a claim?

Think I read up thread that Nessa was 3 when her mother died -. Monica is my wildcard though ;).
Think my DH's Kassim theory is pretty good, even though he will be unbearably smug if it comes to pass ( DH not K)

D'you know the one thing that fascinates me is that we've had seven episodes of a series with a female protagonist and so far there has been no hint of her ever having had a sustained, successful relationship.

It's extraordinary and (although I probably watch less TV than most) I can't immediately think of another comparable show where this was the case.

Surely she must have had a life before she fell in with a woman who was plotting to kill her brother (and presumably Nessa as well.) Her one-sided devotion to Atika would hardly count - even without the murderous super-text. We never did find out any more about Frances - so that possibility seems unlikely.

Is there some sort of Bechdel Prize that Hugo Blick might be awarded?

TheFirmament · 16/08/2014 16:46

I think Atika is honourable though, despite everything. She couldn't bear to see Nessa raped. She didn't kill Rachel, presumably her bosses would have wanted her to (and she said she had) but she couldn't kill a baby and leave Ephra's kids with no mum.

Am I the only one who found Ephra an insufferable twat? He may have been played by everyone but god what a selfish, arrogant wanker. I usually can't bear shooting scenes but I was kind of OK with him getting it Blush - partly because I was so relieved Atika was an evil plotter and not actually in love with him.

I also find Nessa's personal life really weird, and not just in the love life sense. Why don't we ever see her enjoying herself? She has all those amazing clothes but never goes shopping or enjoys a coffee and a croissant, or a nice bath (unless it's in a traumatic state after some kind of injury). She also really doesn't look like she enjoys sex, though she throws herself at blokes - I find her sex scenes so excruciatingly awkward, I'm really hoping that's deliberate and meant to show us she really gay / traumatised by her rape.

And I wish she would stop laughing/smiling painfully in the middle of being in floods of tears. Aaaarrgh stop it woman.

ThursdayLast · 16/08/2014 16:53

ThrFirm "an insufferable twat" is it my mind the perfect description of Ephra. I found those early scenes with Atika thus episode made my skin crawl a little.
And I agree with you. I much prefer Atika as the capable baddie than the idiot woman.

Goodwordguide · 16/08/2014 17:12

Well, I'm not sure scenes of Nessa shopping would make for good drama. I think her rape/birth trauma easily account for her awkwardness with sex - in fact, if she was comfortable with sex, that would be stranger, given what she's gone through.

Totally agree though that her voice is annoying, so robotic - sounds like she's sleepwalking. Hugo Blick was in the Guardian today though saying that she's meant to be in shock, heavily traumatised and detached, which would explain her awkwardness bit plus all that dressing and undressing of her coporate wardrobe - putting on her armour as it were.

Oh yes I agree with itsmy. I just prefer Attika as a character now I know she's not a sap for for Ephra.

I'd want her on my team. But not as my friend.

ThursdayLast · 16/08/2014 17:24

And Ephra us just too weak to have any respect for.

It's funny though isn't it? Both Hugh and Ephra are having/gave had affairs, yet we perceive them very differently.

TheFirmament · 16/08/2014 17:31

Obviously yes she's done all those terrible things (though we don't know the full story yet, eg. if they are lesser evils compared to something Nessa has done) so I'm not saying she's great, just that despite following her orders she does have a heart.

Re the laughing, yes I know it does really happen, but not THAT much! It would be a realistic touch if she did it once or twice but it's about every 5 minutes! It's similar to her amazing posh British accent which is brilliantly accurate, but just that bit TOO languid and overdone. It feels like she and the director come over as so smug about the incredible emotional truth of those scenes, whereas it's actually a bit OTT. And the clothes are the same - just too perfect, too white and uncreased, too languidly flowing. Does the woman never throw on an old cardie?

It has a weird effect though because I find her both compelling and almost unbearably annoying to watch.

Ninjabread · 16/08/2014 18:23

I thought she sounded like Emma Thompson.

GypsyFloss · 17/08/2014 13:48

I've watched 3 episodes back to back and caught up. Don't know what I think anymore other than Nessa's voice is getting on my nerves, Hugh is lovely and Frances doesn't appear to have any eyelashes.

what about rachel's daughters?
they are stein heirs aren't they?

it almost seems that nessa is living in a show home. it isn't real is it. apart from the 'cell' she sleeps in.

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 21/08/2014 00:18

It's TODAY!

SquidgyMummy · 21/08/2014 14:30

It's TODAY!

I'm glad it's not just me who is ridiculously excited and a wee bit sad that it's the last episode.

I give up on the theorising, although I hope it is a happy ending for Nessa and Kassim.

Bizarrely I too think it is Atika who is the Honorable Woman. "What price a Nation"
I am intrigued with her fascination with mothers and children. I wonder if she is Judith Stein's third child.... (although the actress is older than Nessa)

OneStepCloser · 21/08/2014 18:42

Oki my call is that Hugh is the Honarable Woman, how I'm not sure but I think he is Grin

Looking forward to it though.
