Anyone watching? It is so slow. I'm not sure I'll be watching parts 2 and 3 or even the whole of part 1.

I recommend you stick with it tribpot (not that you implied you weren't going to!). It's grim, but very satisfying in the way the characters develop (and I'm not one for grim stories as a rule).

Viviennemary · 27/12/2013 16:53

I was really disappointed. It was so deadly dull and boring. And Elizabeth was totally miscast. She is only supposed to be 26 not 46. I will watch it again tonight though.

tribpot · 27/12/2013 16:58

I seem to recall thinking Jennifer Ehle was miscast as well as definitely not 20! AMM is great, but given obviously in her 30s and not 20s, why not mess about with the plot a bit and make Lizzie and Darcy a bit older? I suppose it would have made it a bit less credible that Georgiana still isn't married but it's barely credible now. Invent some engagement to a man who was conveniently killed in the latest war to explain her being still unmarried?

Lomaamina, I have been putting the book down a bit so thanks for the encouragement to keep going!

diddl · 27/12/2013 17:36

I think too young an actress wouldn't seem "sensible" enough somehow.

Case in point KK as Lizzie Bennet-just laughable.

tribpot · 27/12/2013 17:54

Hold the front page. Synopsis of tonight:

"Wickham's arrest leads to the cancellation of the ball, and Jane arrives to help quell Lydia and Mrs Bennet's hysterics."

Hurrah! Jane is coming!

diddl, I think you're right - it would be hard for a young actress to avoid seeming frivolous rather than sportive. Arguably one of the reasons why Emma T was cast as Elinor Dashwood despite being the same age as AMM is now but playing a 19 year old!

Thisisaghostlyeuphemism · 27/12/2013 18:01

Men are always old acting younger - I don't see the big deal with amm doing so. I think she's a great lizzie.

I was (over) empathising with lizzie last night- I too have family like Lydia and wickham - so was enjoying the whole 'this is awkward' thing.

BalloonSlayer · 27/12/2013 18:03

YY re Jennifer Ehle, I loved her at the time but whenever I watch the BBC P&P now I am astounded at how caked in make up she is. I still think she plays the part beautifully though.

tribpot · 27/12/2013 18:11

I think Ehle is my favourite Lizzie but then you tend to like the one of your own 'time' so to speak. I also thought she was fabulous in The King's Speech when first the Queen Mother (when she was Queen) and the King appear in her living room and she asks "will Their Majesties be staying for dinner?" with great poise :) (Of course the King in question being Firth/Darcy).

wetaugust · 27/12/2013 20:32

Not just the best casting because it's of 'your' time - I'm ancient so have seen a fair few Lizzies and Darcys in my time and the Ehle/Firth pairing was just magical.

I cannot imagine it being surpassed.

BitOfFunWithSanta · 27/12/2013 21:32

Poor poor Lizzy, thinking that Darcy regrets his match This episode is very good, I think.

Miserere · 27/12/2013 21:49

I don't think it helps that the actress who plays Elizabeth looks older than her actual 35 years.

I'm not enjoying it at all, but then I didn't like the book. There's better JA fan fiction out there.

tribpot · 27/12/2013 21:51

Miserere, what would you recommend? Apart from Longbourn that's mentioned above. (Not really fan fiction that one, more like Rozencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead for P&P).

bisjo · 27/12/2013 21:54

Watching as nothing else on and this episode is heaps better than last night's.

I do hope Lizzie gets another dress

KrabbyPatty · 27/12/2013 22:15

Oh it was dull. Not going to bother with the rest.

Thisisaghostlyeuphemism · 27/12/2013 22:15

It was great, poor old' lizzie.

Did anyone watch the Americans? Diary was hot/good in that too.

Thisisaghostlyeuphemism · 27/12/2013 22:15

Diary? Darcy!

diddl · 27/12/2013 22:16

I'm thinking that that ep just about spelled it out!

Thisisaghostlyeuphemism · 27/12/2013 22:17

Nooo, I'm still clueless although I have a couple of suspects.

wetaugust · 27/12/2013 22:21

Mark Darcy's on ITV right now (Bridget Jones)

BornToFolk · 27/12/2013 22:26

Did anyone watch the Americans?

I did! And totally loved it. Can't wait for the next series. I was very excited to see that Matthew Rhys was in Death Comes to Pemberly but I'm not thrilled with with overall. The actors are all good but the plot is just too thin. And Anna Maxwell-Martin does look too old. Sorry.

diddl · 27/12/2013 22:30

Loved The Americans.

BitOfFunWithSanta · 27/12/2013 22:44

Matthew Rhys was also in Daphne DuMaurier's The Scapegoat fairly recently.

BitOfFunWithSanta · 27/12/2013 22:47

Born, I loved The Americans too, but I lost track of it after three or four episodes. It was on bit late for me- not that I go to bed, but I can get a bit, um, tired and emotional a that time of night. It makes concentrating difficult... Xmas Grin

Thisisaghostlyeuphemism · 27/12/2013 22:50

I lost track of it too! But every so often I would look up and Matthew Rhys would be looking sternly at me and it was nice.
And every so often he would be wearing a crazy wig and moustache and it was confusing.
