Anyone watching? It is so slow. I'm not sure I'll be watching parts 2 and 3 or even the whole of part 1.

OP posts:

I quite liked it. I like Anna Maxwell Martin but she is is playing Lizzy too austere, and there is little playfulness between herself and Darcy, so not much chemistry there which is shame.

The story of the 12 yr old boy was very disturbing, things like that probably did happen.

I'm sticking with it!

Thisisaghostlyeuphemism · 26/12/2013 22:47

Wet, she's only speculating- she doesn't know- nor do I.

Earthymama · 26/12/2013 22:51

I liked it, loved the casting.
It's never going to be as good as P&P but on Boxing Day, it's fine.

I admit to loving Anna Maxwell Martin so I knew I would like it?

And Matthew Rhys. All good Smile

notnowbernard · 26/12/2013 22:52

I liked it

StarsAbove · 26/12/2013 23:01

I thought it was boring and disappointing, and won't be watching the next episodes. Shame as I love P&P. I absolutely adored Lost in Austen though! So some P&P reimaginings can be good.

tribpot · 26/12/2013 23:34

Right, have now watched it. The usual jarring notes - Lizzie and Darcy practically copping off in the drawing room, for example - and I don't buy this whole 'practically brothers' schtick that's been thrown in to explain why Wickham being accused of murder isn't just an excuse for a right royal knees-up and forgetting all about him.

Is Mrs Bennett going to drop dead next episode? She was a bit too convincing about her pain in the side.

Very slow going. I don't believe Colonel Fitzwilliam would wait 6 years to declare himself to Georgiana if he liked her. He certainly wouldn't refer to Mr Wickham's "seduction" to Lizzie.

What's all the biz with the poor dying guy in the cottage?

And I'm afraid the producers made the usual mistake when casting the local roles, of not bothering to find out what a Derbyshire accent actually sounds like. Dying guy in Cottage almost sounded like he was from the West Country.

Most of all I miss Jane and Bingley. I do hope they show up next time.

LineRunner · 26/12/2013 23:39

Yes, it's Posh vs Oooh Arrrr, I'm afraid.

The dying guy in the cottage. Tedious plot thingy.

tribpot · 26/12/2013 23:41

Posh vs Ooh Arrrr and By 'Eck. (At least Yorkshire isn't quite so far away). They might as well chuck in a Cockerny sparra or two and have done.

breatheslowly · 26/12/2013 23:49

DH asked me if it was an authorised sequel. I'm not sure who he thought might authorise it, with Jane Austen having been dead for nearly 200 years.

JugglingUnwiselyWithBaubles · 26/12/2013 23:56

I quite enjoyed it - but especially the posh house and the dresses. Some decent acting though I thought, even if script and plot were a little dull Xmas Smile

nennypops · 27/12/2013 01:30

FFS! Wetaugust! Try reading posts properly before accusing people of posting spoilers. I suggest you go back and re-read my last post, then tell us if you still think it was a spoiler.

LineRunner · 27/12/2013 06:37

nenny was just taking a wild guess, that's all.

I've read the dismal book, and can't actually recall 'whodunnit', such is my lack of interest in the whole appalling narrative.

StarsAbove · 27/12/2013 07:53

Love it, breatheslowly!

Morgause · 27/12/2013 08:07

I love Chatsworth so I'll watch it again for the scenery.

diddl · 27/12/2013 08:40

I enjoyed it.

Love Matthew Rhys.

I wondered if Denny was killed by mistake & it should have been Wickham, since Wickham is originally from there & Denny not?

Didn't like the Captain(?) Fitzwilliam character much.

tribpot · 27/12/2013 08:45

Well it should have been Wickham because Wickham is an unspeakable arse. Whereas Denny always seemed rather sweet.

But they haven't really established many suspects among the cast we've seen so far, I hope it's not going to turn out that Denny was also in love with Georgiana (who is this lawyer dude who turned up at random?) and Colonel F has bumped him off in a fit of rage? That is so not what would happen in Austen's literary world. If she was going to branch out into murder mystery the killer would have to be someone who wasn't One of Us, like a French person (noted for high passion and all that).

cjdamoo · 27/12/2013 08:47

I havnt watched it despite my sister been in it :D

diddl · 27/12/2013 09:18

Think it's too obvious to be Colonel Fitzwilliam.

Was he off meeting someone?

And who's the hissy woman in the woods??!!

LIZS · 27/12/2013 09:24

Jane and Bingley feature strongly in the book unlike Mrs Bennet who does not except in passing. Not on the RT cast list either so maybe not at all. Confused as to the reason for change tbh although it puts more emphasis on Georgiana. I do hope they also omit the allusions to other JA books that PD James made - very naff

Thisisaghostlyeuphemism · 27/12/2013 11:06

Who did your sis play cjdamoo?

Miserere · 27/12/2013 11:25

The actress playing Elizabeth was far too old, I thought. Especially as, I think, it was supposed to be only six years since their marriage.

diddl · 27/12/2013 11:37

Isn't there about 10yrs difference between Elizabeth & Darcey?

Which would put Jenna Coleman as a better Lizzy age wise.

I liked AMM though.

TBH, though, I do get fed up with Hollywood style actor husbands & 20yrs younger actress wives iyswim.

MrsVaughnRice · 27/12/2013 11:42

Fitzwilliam couldn't have declared himself earlier because he was a younger son - not a suitable match for Georgiana. Now his brother is dead and he's the heir he can aspire to her. But I can't believe that he would still be single after all these years - he should have proposed to an attractive young daughter of a banker ages ago.

Likewise I don't believe Georgiana is still single. With Lizzy to chaperone her in the social whirl she should have been married years ago. No wonder she's having privat correspondences Shock with young men and calling them by their Christian names Shock, the shameless hussy.

Lomaamina · 27/12/2013 12:27

MrsVaughanRice Grin at 'shameless hussy'.

I'm afraid that whilst I think the actress playing Lizzy is excellent, she seems too old (and Rebecca Front too young to be her mother, although I appreciate a 20 year difference, which is what it would be justabout, is in line with the story and the times).

To be fair to the casting director, are they simply trying to portray her as the Lizzy of old, happy to get her gowns dirty whilst going for long treks cross-country? So, not bothered about painting her face and suchlike?

Which reminds me, I wonder if anyone on this thread has read 'Longbourn', by Jo Baker - a sort of P&P from the servant's perspective. The bit where one of the servants is tutting over having to scrub Lizzy's skirt hems is rather a telling reversal of points of view.

tribpot · 27/12/2013 12:39

I've started Longbourn, Lomaamina, very interesting so far. Not to mention absolutely grim - all that 'ahhh, a happier bygone age' nostalgia abruptly exploded when you look at the horrendous working conditions of ordinary people.

I suppose Colonel F felt no pressure to marry by a particular age - as Darcy and Bingley also didn't - but I still don't believe he's been waiting all this time to make his case for Georgiana.

And yes to private correspondence. By rights (and evidence from Sense & Sensibility) this should indicate Georgiana is engaged to Lawyer Dude.

LIZS, IMDB concurs that Jane and Bingley aren't in it. Definitely not right.
