donna never simpered I loved Donna she was amazing I thought she got a shitty deal at the end though if you remember anything your head will explode Hmm

RTD wrote torchwood none of those females simpered,

D W had loads of writers RTD was the executive producer and writer

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/09/2012 14:40

oh lor' in the torchwood reboot that blonde thing simpered throughout...

i think sexuality can have a bearing on how men write for women, to be fair, but the established shorthand would tend to be that gay men write stronger (think elsie tanner etc) and straight men come up with simperers.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/09/2012 14:43

in fact now that i see what cakebot actually wrote, she seems to be using the established shorthand and saying that it's a surprise his characters were so wet.
i never thought of rose as wet, though, she was just in love. martha was a bit drippy for a while, but came through. donna was a nutcase from day dot.

Mrsjay · 03/09/2012 14:53

straight men come up with simperers.

so steven moffat wrote all that simpering nonsense then Grin I forgot about her in torchwood, gwen never simpered she was well ard

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/09/2012 15:08

i'm not saying i buy it, just that's the shorthand that cakebot was using.

gwen was great, i dearly loved torchwood in its first incarnation. i love all of it, tbh. the reboot was a huge shocker for me, i very nearly stopped watching altogether. and i'm no quitter.

Tee2072 · 03/09/2012 15:18

I had extreme dislike for Torchwood after it went from series to mini-series. I despised, and I never use that word lightly, Children of Earth. The ending was lazy writing at its worst and made, IMHO, Jack an unredeemable character.

BTW, the some of the strongest female characters currently around were written by a straight man, Joss Whedon. Buffy may not always make smart choices but she never simpers. Grin

Cakebot · 03/09/2012 15:21

Sorry, yes, I was just using a throwaway line. I think personal experience has a bearing on how you write, and RTD's sexuality is part of his experience, yet his female characters were a bit 'traditional' in the relationship sense. (actually, Amy, 20 year old wife and mother/strippogram/no discernable career apart from looking pretty...) now I'm losing my point completely. Didn't realise he'd written Torchwood.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/09/2012 16:19

ah yes but rtd is not responsible for amy, though. that's the moff.

AND IS WHEDON STRAIGHT??!! that never even occurred to me. Shock

Tee2072 · 03/09/2012 16:27

Whedon is straight, married, has kids, the whole nine yards. He's probably the most normal SciFi genre producer out there!! Grin

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/09/2012 16:48

you know what they say about the quiet ones... Grin

cakebot · 03/09/2012 16:49

Yes that was my point! I contradicted my self, and lost the whole point of my argument! Amy and River are both the Moffs, neither are simpering, but they are both crazy in love!

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/09/2012 16:53

amy is bloody annoying, though... her constant pre-menstrual anger is almost as bad as simpering.

Tee2072 · 03/09/2012 16:54

I would agree about Amy and her anger.

River is too cool. And her back story gives me a headache, it's so convoluted!

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/09/2012 16:55

yes, i do like the moff's stuff but he does seem to think when it comes to women that strong = cross and sarcastic

confuddledDOTcom · 03/09/2012 17:05

I've just watched River's first episode on Watch and I don't think what they wrote for her afterwards lives up to it, unless there's a lot more to come.

Are we getting Torchwood back? I know they have to completely restaff if they do!

Tee2072 · 03/09/2012 17:11

Oh gosh, I hope not, confuddled. It was just awful last time. Last two times.

Unless you're my husband. Then it was the greatest TV ever. But I often wonder about him. Grin

Eggrules · 03/09/2012 17:21

Loved it.

I am ready for companion change over.

MammyToMany · 03/09/2012 17:42

Is River in this series? I liked her particularly the scene in Let's Kill Hitler where she is trying to kill the doctor. I don't think she would have worked with David Tennent as he was Roses doctor through and through, and then all of a sudden he regenerates and all thoughts of Rose are gone. Nice change to have a non Rose wounded doctor.

FrankelSaysRelax · 03/09/2012 17:55

Alex Kingston is listed on IMDB as a cast member for "The Angels Take Manhattan", which will be Amy and Rory's exit episode.

HmmThinkingAboutIt · 03/09/2012 18:18

AitchTwoOhOneTwo Mon 03-Sep-12 14:24:13
mind you, i wouldn't have described Donna as simpering.

No just bloody annoying! Give me Martha, Rose or Amy any day of the week.

First look of Oswin is positive though.

Tee2072 · 03/09/2012 18:24

Yes, River is in one episode.

I am hoping they mention Sarah Jane at some point. Sad

confuddledDOTcom · 03/09/2012 18:25

I'd like Torchwood back - not that awful thing we've had recently!

Both 9 and 10 were Rose's Doctor though and then yes he completely forgets about her, other than when he said her picture made him feel guilty (compared to 10 who says she's what keeps him fighting). I think DT could have worked with River, I think MS is a bit too young to carry it off I know obviously the Doctor is older than River but it still looks too young.

There is a review on YouTube of "Let's Kill Hitler" and the guy complains - repeatedly! - about the title not being accurate! He looks scarily like my XH, fortunately though he's a lot younger so it's not him Confused

FrankelSaysRelax · 03/09/2012 18:36

Why is the title not accurate? They did go off to kill Hitler! Confused

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/09/2012 19:04

ah now i found donna absolutely intolerable in teh first couple of things she did, far too hammy and swearie nan. however, in the pompeii episode she totally turned me around and i luffed her thereafter.

snapespeare · 03/09/2012 19:30

Hated Donna at first, borderline racist in 'turn left'. Snippy & over-bearing... I still cried and cried when donnadoctor had her memory wiped. To have all of that, the whole universe, all of time and space & not know that you've had it and to back to being a temp from chiswick. Sad
