Is anyone else addicted to Pointless?

I'm horridly addicted to Pointless. I have it on series link and watch it at night whenever DH is away. I desperately want to be on the show, I even applied. Am I a sad git?

And isn't Xander's general knowledge amazing!

Oh man yes, I was going to start a thread about it actually.

I blame a friend of mine who used to talk about it and I remember saying, oh, I am never in at that time (out busy with kids' activities). But suddenly, their stuff all seems to start later or be at the weekend, and several times a week we seem to be in to watch it.

The thing I like (apart from amazing my kids by knowing that Cloud Cuckoo Land was dreamed up by Aristophanes!) is that the final prize is almost impossible to win (you have to have such detailed knowledge of what they happen to pick on) and when you win it's ot even that much! Somehow it is addictive. I think it is the obscure facts you can show off your knowledge of.

Squirrelface · 20/02/2012 22:06

Me too, but have never admitted this before! Goes well with a cup of tea, before cooking the evening meal. We even went to the studios and watched one being recorded last summer.

SwedishEdith · 20/02/2012 22:07

Has anyone ever one the final question? Agree that you would need a complete knowledge of the subject to know which is the lowest answer.

SwedishEdith · 20/02/2012 22:07

one? won

notpodd · 20/02/2012 22:08

I know - if I did ever go on, and they put on a question about Pink Floyd I'd be sorted, but if they put on a question about EastEnders or Football I'd be buggered. Then, having staggered through the lot I'd probably only win a grand...

Ooooo squirrelface - were you one of the 100 people given 100 seconds to...

Err dont be getting ideas anyone. The very lovely Mr Armstrong is all mine !! (Sure Mrs A wont mind.)

Clary · 20/02/2012 22:14

Edith, the other week two really nice lads won abotu £11k by knowing films starring John Cusack. I went blank and could only think of Grosse Point Blank but they named three I had never heard of so it was obviously their specialist subject. I have seen men win with footie questions too.

I could win on characters from Shakespeare maybe. Or TV quiz shows

2ombie5layer · 20/02/2012 22:15

we watch it every night. It was very annoying recently because we didnt know they were repeats, but was glad to hear that there was a new series Grin

Does anyone else think about what categories they would like and what their answers would be?

Also I thought tonight there was an American in the 100 people answering the state capitals.

ImpatientOne · 20/02/2012 22:16

The final question is insanely difficult! I only remember once when I was screaming at the TV

'Circus skills, world traveller, communicator'

It was the question about Cub and Brownie badges and the silly men chose boring Scout things like archery and fishing. Grin

LookAtAllTheseFucksIGive · 20/02/2012 22:18

My cousin is on it soon. The next two - three weeks. It was supposed to be shown in September but got postponed. She's not allowed to say how she did. (Probably embarrassed) She'll be Sarah A. :o

SwedishEdith · 20/02/2012 22:19

Oh glad to hear it's winnable. Watched the other day when it was Signatories of the US Declaration of Independence. Hadn't even realised there were so many Blush

notpodd · 20/02/2012 22:20

I often think about what categories I'd like. I'm such an anorak. REM albums/singles. Pink Floyd albums. I knew all the films in the opening round today.

I once saw a couple win 15K for knowing ridiculously obscure characters from a Midsummer night's dream

I saw the one about cub/scout badges - carwomanship was my answer. I had that badge for changing my dad's car tyre. And outdoor wood's woman. As if there is an indoor wood's woman.

Did I mention I might be an anorak.

Me too! Got hooked on maternity leave, when it was still on BBC2 earlier in the day. Used to try and describe it to people ("it's like Family Fortunes in reverse, only much better") but strangely I didn't manage to sell it to them.Grin Now it's gone mainstream and everyone seems to be into it. Not like me to be ahead of the crowd.

Always feel smug if I get a pointless, or manage to name everything in one of the head-to-head categories (admittedly this tends to only happen in rather low-brow rounds - Spice Girls' children being a notable example!)

Ponders · 20/02/2012 22:25

I knew Des Moines today - my first ever pointless answer Grin

notpodd · 20/02/2012 22:25

LOL - I remember the spice girl's children round

OP posts:
Clary · 20/02/2012 22:26

Oh that US signatories one was impossible! I knew none!!!

Shakespeare comes up a lot doesn't he "non-eponymous Shakespeare plays" was the round my mate quoted to me which got me hooked

So if you are on it you need to brush up yr Shakespeare and US history/geography I reckon.

Oooh someone won the other day with words starting and ending in K. Kopeck was the pointless one I think. Or was it kickback?

2ombie5layer · 20/02/2012 22:28

DH often gets pointless answers Envy I never remember the good stuff that no-one else knows.

Squirrelface · 20/02/2012 22:28

No notpodd - I wasn't one of the 100 people .... (although I'd love to do that). I think they use a market research company to get the answers. We did appear briefly on the screen when they cut to the audience clapping, but as none of my friends has admitted to this addiction I think my secret is still safe.

SwedishEdith · 20/02/2012 22:28

Well, I thought I knew some of the signatories. Got one - like 99% of people, I think

notpodd · 20/02/2012 22:29

and countries - LeSotho, Micronesia and Vanuatu

Louis Seiz relax

We also love it! Grin and get stupidly proud of ourselves when we get a pointless answer.
Then it's back to reality with Universally Challenged (as it's known in this house) at 8pm.
We are Sad aren't we?
