I love the fact that this is a new costume drama too - with unexpected plot twists...has anyone else seen the trailers for the new Jane Eyre film and thought - What is the point? And the remake of Sense and Sensibility was a dead copy of the Emma Thompson / KW one.... even if it did have the bloke who plays Matthew in Downton in it Grin

PortBlackSandWitchIsThere · 19/09/2011 14:00

I've thought about this a bit more now Grin ... obviously there has to be remakes - not everyone will be thrilled at watching 1940s versions of P&P or Wuthering Heights. It just seems a bit lazy to do new adaptions every couple of years - no new ideas etc.

Yes, i think that was my original point.....

Deliaskis · 19/09/2011 14:05

I enjoyed last night's episode, although had to go to bed at 10 (expecting poorly DD to wake us up lots in the night) so will watch the last half hour tonight, then Spooks, interesting juxtaposition of drama there!

I do like Downton though, like you say PortBlack it's nice to have different period drama to watch. I love Austen etc. but they do get a bit overdone, why do people re-make and re-make and re-make the same things, when there is lots of e.g. Dickens that hasn't yet been given a good airing, and actually I've only seen JE and WH from any of the Brontes. TV companies do seem to just pick favourites and ignore everything else. So yes, Downton is a nice change.

It has a great plot as well as characters, don't you think? A proper ripping yarn.

SoupDragon · 19/09/2011 14:13

"But she´s female, she was never going to inherit"

So she is not allowed to feel the injustice of it? Confused

I don't think she was prepared to marry just because the inheritance was part of the deal. I think she loved/loves Matthew and was thrown by the conflicting advice given to her. Made her dither about it and lose him.

Whatever, I still think Edith was more of a bitch to take steps to ruin her sisters reputation. :o

STEP BACK A MOMENT

Right, Cora was pregnant wasn't she? What happened if two years have passed, what have I forgotten in my dimwittedness?

ThePrincessRoyalFiggyrolls · 19/09/2011 14:18

Just wikied so forget I asked Blush

lizziebennet · 19/09/2011 14:19

O'Brien thought that she was going to be replaced, though really it was Maggie Smith who needed a new ladies maid, so she left out some soap for Cora to trip on to get her back. She did and she lost the baby.

diddl · 19/09/2011 14:22

"I don't think she was prepared to marry just because the inheritance was part of the deal"

Well she was where the cousin was concerned-or so we are led to believe.

sieglinde · 19/09/2011 14:28

Julian Fellowes' wife has been active in extending the D Abbey brand into a book. I just saw the first half hour and find it induces utter uncritical pleasure, followed quickly by guilt, mainly political guilt.

LeBOF · 19/09/2011 14:31

I like O'Brien's character this series- she seems less malevolent and more measured. I think her guilt at Lady Cora's accident and losing her ally Thomas have knocked a few edges off her.

Summerbird73 · 19/09/2011 14:48

ooo good LeBof as long as i know who you are then i can agree with EVERYTHING you say Blush my vairy good friend and i have been talking in a P&P Lady Catherine stylee to eachother since the 1995 adaptation!

i thought O'Briens attempts at picking on the new maid were pretty rubbish, typical example of a bully being a bit of a rubbish bully without her ally. Thomas is sooo going back to DA, they should have got rid of him when they could.

I like the modern fresh feel to the drama. It is still steeped in tradition but there is an edginess to it. And Lord and Lady G are lovely portraying a Gentry couple who actually love eachother!

begonyabampot · 19/09/2011 16:02

love it, love it, love it and loving all the chat about it. It's about the only think I make an effort to watch at the moment (though love The Wright Stuff whisper when I'm ironing in the morning).

scarlettlips · 19/09/2011 19:02

LeBOF...Oh my god, I shall hang my head in shame Blush Yes of course I mean Thomas. William is utterly lovely and I think him and Daisy are just too cute.

Daisy will you be my girl.....awwwww bless him.

MurielTheActor · 19/09/2011 19:55

Oh it is a load of annoying compelling nonsense....

swanyriver · 19/09/2011 20:04

(I've seen on this thread a poster, swanriver, I'll try & change my name, we're too similar)

Does anyone else think O'Brien may be Thomas' mother?

It crossed my mind. But I think their bond is based on evil rather than genetics...

PureBloodMuggle · 19/09/2011 20:43

I'm not sure I'm ever going to get over the heartbreak for Anna.

Also (I'm very rubbish with names) the Irish driver chap. Awkward.

Summerbird73 · 19/09/2011 20:43

oooohhh i never thought of that one, although i still see O'Brien as the shagging teenager in Rita, Sue and Bob Too, even more so when i see her on Benidorm!

Summerbird73 · 19/09/2011 20:45

pureblood i dont think that is the last we have heard of Sybil and the irish guy, (he does have looovely eyes!) i too was heartbroken for Anna - i am still holding out for a reunion though (didnt the trailer have a shot of them kissing - and not the snog last night?)

PureBloodMuggle · 19/09/2011 20:50

O'Brien was in Rita, Sue and Bob Too?

No way!!!!

Oooh I hope so Summerbird73. Though I am worried for him, her being 'flattered' and all that.

Aftereightsaremine · 19/09/2011 20:56

Ok I am officially sad I have watched this 3 times today! I think Mary & Matthew will get back together not sure about Sybil though.

Was it my imagination or was Edith kissing someone in next weeks trailer?

SheWhoMustNotBeFlamed · 19/09/2011 20:59

Right.

Cora dies - a victim of Edith's driving.

Lord G marries Lavinia, a snake in the grass.

The girls are LIVID.

Mary marries Matthew, and she and Lavinia compete to produce a male heir.
