Bloody mum rang to ask me about how much Internet she can use before it's full. Don't ask.

Why did bates have to leave?? Aaargh missed crucial bit!

OP posts:

Ethel was in Emmerdale. Chloe. The actress is Amy Nuttall. I googled it.

hiccymapops · 18/09/2011 23:13

I didn't even think of doing that. Thank you, it was driving me crackers.

Popbiscuit · 18/09/2011 23:15

Aaagh! We have to wait until December 18th to watch!!!!

sugarandspiceandallthingsnice · 18/09/2011 23:15

Loved it, and so did DH. I really hope Bates comes back, and why did Matthew have to bring along Lavinia? I wanted him to fall for Sybil!

ExitPursuedByaBear · 18/09/2011 23:18

Loved it - but too many bloody adverts. I wanted to Skyplus it and watch Spooks, but DH won that one Confused

swanriver · 18/09/2011 23:24

a lot of swooning looks all round Smile
at one point Lord [Duke?] said "bedizened" - was a bit Hmm at all this fancy language, and Thomas used the word "Deliverance". overegged?
love the campness and conspiratorialness of Carson and housekeeper
also loving the new style of clothes

Is it my imagination or has Bates' jaw got a bit podgier?

Like the way the daughters all seem a bit more grownup and less bickery.

Bit with cake was not convincing at all.

paulapantsdown · 18/09/2011 23:24

What I do is just pause the telly, go and something else for 20 minutes, then sit down to watch it and fast forward through all the ads.

Which was fine until sky box stopped working half way through. I nearly had a nervous breakdown. Am now watching it on ITV+1.

hiccymapops · 18/09/2011 23:25

I wanted him to fall for Sybil too.

loving it, Mathew is quite dishy!

swanriver · 18/09/2011 23:45

He did fall for Sybil. He never got over her, that's why he is engaged to such a boring person. He still loves her. Self handicap.
Propriety, not overstepping mark etc etc. I think there will have to be a thunderstorm or a life or death situation for this one to sort itself out.
Mind you, everyone else seems to speak their mind whatever their station, it's all a bit odd.

FrozenChocolate · 18/09/2011 23:53

no surely he fell for Mary? Sybil is the middle one who wants to bea nurse.

sugarandspiceandallthingsnice · 19/09/2011 00:03

Mary is the one that he had fallen for Frozen, you are right. However, I wanted him to want Sybil instead as she is the nicest of the sisters. I still haven't forgiven Mary for chasing away Edith's suitor, much as Edith annoys me.

I now really want Bates to come back and Lord Grantham to pay off Mrs B or find out something about her when the newspaper man comes to stay, or something.

FrozenChocolate · 19/09/2011 00:08

oooh, i forgot about the newspaper guy! the bbc one is nothing compared to this, is it? can't even remember their plots.

FrozenChocolate · 19/09/2011 00:09

feel a bit guilty for saying that. sorry, BBC.

sugarandspiceandallthingsnice · 19/09/2011 00:13

Oops, BBC I can't think of your period drama's name - the remake of Upstairs Downstairs. Except it has the lovely Neil Jackson in it

swanriver · 19/09/2011 00:18

oops yes, sorry Mary not Sybil...Blush I see now what the Sybil posters were saying.
But Sybil of course had unfinished business with the chauffeur

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 19/09/2011 00:24

Bloody thing.

I nearly drowned there earlier this year........well did a rather humiliating river plunge anyways.

The jokes started last week, I may just start living it down when it comes to an end.

diddl · 19/09/2011 07:05

"I still haven't forgiven Mary for chasing away Edith's suitor, much as Edith annoys me."

Yes I think that.

I loathe the Mary character.

What a shame Mrs Bates didn´t go to the papersBlush

Summerbird73 · 19/09/2011 09:21

DH and i just knew when Anna and Mr B were planning their future that it was going to go tits up Sad

BUT I was comforted that it went tits up in the first episode as we have time for it to go right again IYSWIM. Hoping that Lord G sorts it all out, i am liking sugarandspices idea.

I dont like either Edith or Mary, so i was kind of pleased when they cocked eachothers plans up in the last series. See Edith reminds me of my sister, a bitter woman! Grin

diddl · 19/09/2011 09:29

I can see why Edith is bitter though-everyone thinks Mary is marvellous & Edith is ignored.

The dinner party when Lord Strallon(?) was there & Mary wanted nothing to do with him-until Edith started talking to him.

Even ignoring Matthew-who she wasn´t interested in until he "rescued" Sybil at a speech(?)

She wants all the aatention whether she likes the person or not. (imo)

scarlettlips · 19/09/2011 09:55

OMG it was just brill...we recorded it and then fastforward all those pesky ads.

I'm really concerned that Matthew will be killed, after what he said to Mary at the train station about looking after his mother and what's her chops!

Annoying DH kept asking fucking questions...he was getting DA and Upstairs Downstairs mixed up!

hiccymapops · 19/09/2011 10:02

Dh was being a nightmare too, kept taking the micky out of me for watching 'rubbish'. But he kept asking questions, and I noticed he only went to do stuff in the adverts Grin

Summerbird73 · 19/09/2011 10:07

oooh diddle i completely agree about Mary being a nasty piece of work too, but then Edith did fan the flames by writing to the Turkish Ambassador they should be locked in the cellar and left to squabble it out Wink but you see if Mrs Bates went to the press then the whole family would have been implicated as well as Anna (although she is in on it - she did drag the body along the corridor.. Hmm ) and i do 'heart' Lord Grantham

scarlettlips i dont think Matthew will be killed, although sadly i think William will be Sad

i commented to DH that i was surprised that the Gentry still had 'valets' and 'dressers' in the Trenches, of course i had forgotten that historically, wars were fought by the middle classes and upper (Boer War etc). WW1 was the war that changed all wars (was supposed to end all wars Sad ) i agree that the production of the Somme was very powerful.

diddl · 19/09/2011 10:14

Oh I agree it would have ruined the whole family.

Yes Edith "fanned the flames", biut I guess she got pissed off by Mary´s "Miss Perfect" act.

What I partly don´t "get" is that Mary was snubbed in London because it was known about, but not the rest of the family(?)
