horsefair

Thingumy · 15/02/2011 21:50

Fair people aren't gipsies.

They are just a different type of traveller.

CaveMum · 15/02/2011 21:52

Thanks lisa, I knew I had heard about that story.

noeyedear · 15/02/2011 21:52

I thought Irish travellers were the ones who worked the fairs?

socka · 15/02/2011 21:55

Ahh so a third group, irish/romany/fair? Just remembering a lot of girls in amazing outfits at the fair

sailorsgal · 15/02/2011 21:55

"trying to be low key" just choked on my lemsip. Grin

thenightsky · 15/02/2011 21:55

Why do the blokes always wear vests to the weddings when the women are so dressed up to the nines?

noeyedear · 15/02/2011 21:56

Why don't the men want to be identified? Did they explain it? I haven't watched every show.

Mirage · 15/02/2011 21:56

fair workers are known as showmen/showpeople.

CaveMum · 15/02/2011 21:56

Ok, I'm going to throw this out there and hope that I don't offend anyone, but is anyone getting a "vibe" from Bridget and Elizabeth? They way that they look at each other: they look as if they're in love.

Thingumy · 15/02/2011 21:56

I think the fair bods are called travelling show people.

juneybean · 15/02/2011 21:56

All different kinds of travellers go to Appleby that I am aware of, I know the irish travellers near us went to Appleby last year.

Thingumy · 15/02/2011 21:57

Yes I thought that too Cave.

Sad for them if true Sad.

sheeplikessleep · 15/02/2011 21:57

noey - theory that because of prejudices, i.e. the men won't get work, when they are known as travellers.

BUT, have read others theories could be because they are wanted by the police / tax man.

blueberryboybaitonSafari · 15/02/2011 21:58

That Wedding was at our local church :)

juneybean · 15/02/2011 21:58

noeyedear I think it was said last week that they think it will affect their work as some are employed.

lisad123isasnuttyasaboxoffrogs · 15/02/2011 21:58

they dont want people to know they are gypies as it might stop them getting work Hmm

Oh. Thanks.

WhensBedtime · 15/02/2011 21:59

I thought that too, CaveMum.

noeyedear · 15/02/2011 21:59

Suppose the girls don't work, so they don't have that problem.

Lucyintheskywithdiazepam · 15/02/2011 22:00

Fair people are known as Showmen generally and are a diffeerent culture altogether.

CaveMum A horse was drowned at Appleby a few years ago. And if the reports I heard from people who were there are to be believed, the young man responsible was, shall we say, 'severely disciplined'. He had apparently been warned not to try to cross the river with the horse as he wasn't experienced enough to do it safely. Traveller men take their horses incredibly seriously....I've never come across a badly treated horse. They're generally better looked after than the wives.

CaveMum · 15/02/2011 22:00

That chesnut in with the coloured ponies looks rather nice. Looks better bred than the other ponies too.

Thingumy glad I'm not the only one that thought as much. they've certainly not mentioned how a gay traveller would be treated by their community, but I suspect it wouldn't be seen as a good thing.

juneybean · 15/02/2011 22:01

Women if they do work, give up work when they become married.

I think it's in case they are identified by police etc. Everyone knows the scrap metal people round here are travellers, doesn't make any difference.
