I've been in the rather privileged position of spending time with Irish Travller women in their home - caravans and houses. They very much accept their lot in life...they are there to be a mother, clean and cook for their husband and that's about it. I've never heard one say that she's unhappy as such but they have often expressed the wish that they could do more outside of the home. Believe me, when you gain their trust, women do speak freely about their lives (I've heard first hand tales that have made me weep with sadness and cry with laughter) but I doubt that any woman who wanted to reamin a part of her community would speak publicly.
I do know several that have stepped outside of tradtion and have pursued education and a career but they are not the norm in the community, currently.
