Why the Hmm face lisa? Plenty of travellers are in legal employment and prejudice is certainly a factor. My brother's flatmate has lost his Irish accent to blend in.

Thingumy · 15/02/2011 22:01

People do show prejudice against them.

I read a thread on MN today about a lost child and the OP was worried about a 'gypsy' family stealing him.

Hmm

I love our scrap metal boys, they took away my dishwasher and our old bikes, saves me a trip to the tip :)

McDreamy · 15/02/2011 22:02

blueberry where was that? It looked so familiar but I just couldn't place it.

CaveMum · 15/02/2011 22:03

Lucy thanks for that. I agree that travellers treat their horses as valuables, which is why the incident in the river was a shock to me.

noeyedear · 15/02/2011 22:03

Didn't someone write a book about being a Gay gypsy? Not good, if I remember correctly. I would have thought lesbianism would be a complete taboo. They're married off so young, I doubt they are even given a chance to explore their sexuality.

cave

I've been meaning to read this

The author is gay and lived a gypsy childhood.

lisad123isasnuttyasaboxoffrogs · 15/02/2011 22:04

I guess because maybe I dont understand it. why would being a gypy stop you getting work? They seem to do quite well for themselves and tbh most of the time its pretty clear they are gypies. I can spy one a mile off round here.

Lucyintheskywithdiazepam · 15/02/2011 22:04

The gay thing is funny. Any Irish Traveller who I've asked directly about what they think of gay people point blank deny that there is gay people in the community at all. It just doesn't happen, apparently.

However, I personally know a gay Traveller who is 'out' and lives with his partner (also from a Traveller background, but a less traditional family). he is accepted by his family and the wider Traveller community in general,,,but still people in the same community would say that it doesn't happen...very strange!

Mirage · 15/02/2011 22:05

Sadly,I have come across horses ill treated by travellers. They had too many horses in one field near us and let them all breed with each other. When some of them died, they were left to rot in the field. The other horses were let to roam onto the roads and let into other people's fields without permission. The RSPCA and police were out to them on a regular basis, but nothing was ever done.

lisad123isasnuttyasaboxoffrogs · 15/02/2011 22:05

I dont think the girls are gay, just best friends that know their friendship will no longer be the same :(

blueberryboybaitonSafari · 15/02/2011 22:05

The reception was at Westbury Golf Course in Wiltshire and the wedding at Trowbridge Catholic Church.

socka · 15/02/2011 22:06

Ahh thanks, wiki has a bit about show people here if anyones interested

sheeplikessleep · 15/02/2011 22:06

korma - i agree, i think this overt 'friendliness' / affection is particularly true, given their age ... 17 year old girls can be incredibly close.

Mirage · 15/02/2011 22:06

I can recommend that book,Thingumy-it is a real eye opener and very shocking.

Thingumy · 15/02/2011 22:07

And I've worked with travellers and gypsies who've treated their horses like gold dust.

There are plenty of bad people among all walks of life.

EricNorthmansMistress · 15/02/2011 22:08

'why would being a gypy stop you getting work?'

Really?

Not every traveller wants to be a cash in hand labourer, or a scrap metal dealer, or a horse trader. Many want to work in other professions, and in the real world many people will not employ travellers due to prejudice.

CaveMum · 15/02/2011 22:09

I didn't mean to open a can of worms by saying that about Bridget and Elizabeth, I just felt that there seemed to be a whole other level of sadness.

Anyway, ignore me, I tend to over analyse things Grin

Lucyintheskywithdiazepam · 15/02/2011 22:10

Mirage, that's sad. When ever I've had cause for concern about horses (usually in regard to safety when they have broken free), I've got the Police involved as they have more powers than the RSPCA. Particularly if the owners can't produce an equine passport for the animal - then the police can sieze the horse(s).

lisad123isasnuttyasaboxoffrogs · 15/02/2011 22:11

thats terriblery sad Eric, I guess I have never understood why someone wouldnt employ someone who can do the job and is good at it :(
We have always had travellers round here, there is a huge site nearby so guess Im used to them.

EightiesChick · 15/02/2011 22:15

CaveMum I thought that too and felt very sorry for them.

Thingumy · 15/02/2011 22:16

We have a site here too.

I can't say I've ever spotted a 'traveller' or a 'Gypsy' shopping here in the nearest town. They must blend in with the rest of us.

I have spotted teen travellers outside the next towns bowling alley as all the girls have long hair and all the boys look like they are dressed up to go to a disco aka 80's style Grin.

fatlazymummy · 16/02/2011 09:09

I got a bit choked up when I saw Bridget and Elizabeth dancing together. None of these brides have really seemed happy at all.
It would be interesting to hear from some women who have been married for a few years. They don't seem to exist [in the eyes of this programme]. I wonder if they would be allowed to speak freely about their lives without their husbands present.
