Very very tall daughter

My DD12 (13 next month) is now over 6'5 and almost 6'6. How do I help her with this?
I am 6'2 and DH is 6'4 but she's just that bit taller. DS who's 11 is only 5'4 for comparison.

Everyone always mentions it everywhere she goes and that's before they realise her age cause she looks older. Teachers, friends, everyone.

She's quite slim build and has size 14 feet (i know). She used to not mind her height but now she's getting to be the tallest boy or girl in her whole school, I'm hearing more comments about how she hates it.

Will she grow much more? How can I help her build confidence up?

Want to clarify, we've been doctors and no hormone issue/ disease

Stop replying, guys - this is a wind-up and the OP won’t be back.

Report it if you think it's troll.

anytipswelcome · 01/06/2025 07:56

It is a troll but a weirdly specific one. I don’t bother reporting them unless they’re offensive but for the record, for those saying this could be true, according to statistics - roughly 1 to 10 girls in the entire world might be 6'5" at age 12, and that would include both natural and medical causes (like gigantism).

gmgnts · 01/06/2025 08:51

I have reported the thread - so many PP have taken time and trouble to commiserate and/or offer advice to what seems to be a troll.

Behaveyourself88 · 01/06/2025 10:26

My nieces are 6’7” & 6’4”. The taller one has Marfan syndrome as did her Dad, my DB.
The taller one plays basketball, they live in the States, but both are proud of their height so don’t stoop and enjoy all the advantages of being tall.

Salumthecat · 31/05/2025 22:17

It is unheard of for a 12 year old girl to be 6’6 - literally.

As pp have mentioned the world record of the tallest girl at 12 is 6’2.

Since this has been pointed out the OP hasn’t returned so she’s wasted the time of a lot of people who replied in good faith.

You do realise that “world records” have to be applied for and most people stopped giving a monkeys about applying to the Guinness records books decades ago? Tallest in the Guinness book is simply tallest who wants to be in the Guinness books. They are full of inconsistencies historically.

Its very unusual, not so far out that its impossible for an early maturing girl with tall genes.

My DDs had both reached their height by just under 13 (same age as the DD here) although in their case a mere 5’11/12”. Their brothers didn’t reach full height of well over 6’ until about 16. As pp say - girls tend to settle on their height about a year after periods start.
The OP hasn’t said if Marfan’s has been explicitly excluded which I would check at that height even in a tall family.

Babyboomtastic · 01/06/2025 11:00

Looking at the records for the tallest women to have existed, I suspect that some of them may have been 6 foot 6 (or higher at 12), but for whatever reason it wasn't listed as a record.

Zeng Jinlian is the tallest verifiable woman to have lived (8 foot 1). At 13 she was 7 foot 7. She wasn't listed in the guineas book of records because issues with her spine meant she couldn't stand up straight.

Her growth was caused by a pituitary tumour. She ended up in a wheelchair due to spinal issues, and died from complications of diabetes at the age of 17.

So actually, I think that's a small percentage chance that we haven't been 'had', because this sort of height can exist in a young girl. But if it is real, then she needs significant medical testing, and likely support to ensure she doesn't (like most women that grow to record beating heights) have poor mobility and die very young.

Exactly this. My DD was 6'3" aged 12 but there is absolutely no way we would have added to her discomfort by contacting Guinness Book of records!! There are very tall women in this world who must have been at least 6'6 at age of 12 years seeing as most girls stop growing around them.
Having said all that, the disappearance of OP is not a great sign.

Focus on the positives. She will not struggle to see at gigs (as a short person this is one of my main bugbears). She won't need to search for a step to get to the high shelves. I'm sure there are others.

My friend at school was the tall girl. She just had to shrug off any comments. I suppose she got used to it, however unpleasant it was. Hopefully your dd has good friends around her who don't even notice her height any more.

What an utterly patronising comment.

Bringchocolate · 01/06/2025 14:14

Have you watched Tall Girl (currently on Netflix). It’s a nice movie and is about self esteem. Her BF got her nice shoes from an online drag shop?

anytipswelcome · 01/06/2025 14:27

According to statistics (verifiable CDC and WHO data) not Guinness world records) roughly 1 to 10 girls in the entire world might be 6'5" at age 12, and that would include both natural and medical causes (like gigantism).

Where are you deriving that from?

On the stats I can see for girls from each of those sources both my DDs would have fallen into the 100 percentile despite being a “mere” 5’11’/6’ and entering greater heights just sticks at 100. I can’t find a source which lists numbers in the population for 100 percentile let alone divisions below 0.1%

I’ve no idea whether the OP is genuine or not but the disbelief when you describe even a “normally” tall child is certainly familiar and a lot of the info on this thread is useful.
Ditto patronising comments and “can’t you do anything about it” to the mother when trying to find size 9 women’s shoes for teenagers. Presumably they couldn’t understand why I didn’t just chop her toes off.

Purplebunnie · 01/06/2025 16:25

I have found this thread to be very helpful. My DGC is the tallest out of all the children at her nursery and is predicted to be 6ft+. I have been a bit worried and apprehensive about what the future holds for her and I will be saving this for future reference

Love and hugs to OP and her DD x

MadeUpName25 · 01/06/2025 16:53

As @Firefly1987 said, to be 6’6 at 12 she would have been around 6 ft at age 10. When the average height of a girl that age in the UK is 4’8. Is this likely without raising huge concerns about a medical condition?

Not coming back, OP?

MumblingsonMN · 01/06/2025 17:00

I think the very least the OP could do would be to acknowledge the risk of Marfans and say she was going to take more advice as it is a very serious condition - do you agree @BadAtTecnology35 ?

6 6" at age 12 is not normal and it's frustrating that posters are chipping in with 'Oooooh I was 5 10" when I was 14, etc and missing the point.

Thank you, we have had her checked for disorders such as Marfans before, but will mention it next time we are there just incase they think it's worth a second check, but just to reiterate, it was checked before.

Thanks for all of the advice everyon, I'll look through all of it when I have a minute. As I said before, she's not having a breakdown or anything, just not massively keen on her height so wanted some helpful pointers. I know I am tall too, but don't want to sound patronising to her given she's taller but will read through every comment and see general consensus :)

Coming back to add that I can understand the problems your DD has with her perceived age based on her height.

My DM's cousin (female) was 6'3" and married a man that was 5'8". She hoped it meant her children would be somewhere between them, but her son (now an adult) is 6'6"! He was really tall for his age throughout his life and used to get people telling him off in public for running around like a 5 year old. The problem was he was a 5 year old! He was just as tall as most 10 year olds!

Another school friend of mine was 6'1" and married someone around 5'9" but again her children are taller than her.

Tallness can just sometimes be a strong gene I think!

There's no denying your DD will likely always be one of the tallest at school, but people will start catching up with her in the next few years.

I am pretty sure that they can do height reduction operations. It's a big op and if I were you I'd push for a referral to an expert at GOSH (Great Ormand St Hospital). Local and more provincial hospitals often don't have the best experts (some do, of course.) Other posters have said that Marfans can be hard to diagnose.

Jesus, do you know what an op like that involves?

Height reducing surgery does not exist.

Yeah this. ^ All the 'she could be a model/basketball player/netball player - any amazing sports person' comments are not really helpful. This girl is unusually tall. Nearly 6 ft 6 at 13 is not normal for anyone really, let alone a girl. And her feet are a size 14! I think a GP referal is needed for a specialist. Also, there's no guarantee she will be any good at any sport either!

@BadAtTecnology35 Please push for a specialist appointment for your daughter. This is not normal for her to be this tall. Even if you and your DH are. Girls are rarely taller than their father.

It's normal if it's not a result of any disorder which the OP makes clear it isn't.
Girls can be taller than their father without any health issues. It's grown boys being shorter than their mother which indicates a problem.

bookworm14 · 21/09/2025 08:10

FFS, why has this thread been revived? This girl, if she exists, would be four inches taller than the officially documented tallest 12 year old girl in history, who was featured in the press, and had Marfan syndrome.
