Very very tall daughter

My DD12 (13 next month) is now over 6'5 and almost 6'6. How do I help her with this?
I am 6'2 and DH is 6'4 but she's just that bit taller. DS who's 11 is only 5'4 for comparison.

Everyone always mentions it everywhere she goes and that's before they realise her age cause she looks older. Teachers, friends, everyone.

She's quite slim build and has size 14 feet (i know). She used to not mind her height but now she's getting to be the tallest boy or girl in her whole school, I'm hearing more comments about how she hates it.

Will she grow much more? How can I help her build confidence up?

Want to clarify, we've been doctors and no hormone issue/ disease

The opposite. Daughter is 4ft 11 inch. She's 24.

People treat her like a child. Clothing is difficult too.

pollymere · 31/05/2025 19:04

Apparently you stop growing two years after you get your first period. I suspect your DD may be nearly at her full height. Your DS might not even start until 16!

Just be proud of your height and make her proud of hers. If people comment on her height just go with "Yes, I'm tall". I get the opposite. My DH and his mate once commented "God, you're short" about me when they were immature boys... They grew up. People say dumb stuff about hair colour, height, weight etc. If she feels stunning and beautiful, other people will feel she is stunning too.

@BadAtTecnology35 I noticed you've not replied to the many posters who've said you need a referral in case this is Marfans Sydrome an auto -immune condition which is genetic and inherited. It can have impact on heart health.

Please do take this seriously and pursue it. The NHS website has a page on it.

It's worth doing some research into clothes for tall people, both ranges in mainstream shops and specialist places - Long Tall Sally is the only one I know about (I'm short and fat and my knowledge is of plus size retailers). I don't know if they do anything that appeals to teenagers.

I imagine there's guidance about how to dress to not draw attention to your height at times when you don't want to if you search for it.

If you're good at sewing / interested in learning you could both learn how to make and / or alter clothes to fit well.

I think of clothes that fit and feel comfortable as a baseline thing. I know other people think of clothes as a confidence giving thing. Hopefully you can achieve enough clothing in styles she likes that fit in ways she's happy with (ie. she may not like stomach exposing tops that are that way because of her height) though that will probably be tricky. (Also encourage her to experience the things perhaps discouraged by her height like heeled shoes, if she wants). Check she has enough length in bra straps.

Given you're all tall you probably do this already but think about the ergonomics of your home as you're buying appliances and furniture so it all works for tall people. Is her bed long enough?

I suspect the height difference is less obvious when she's sitting so that might be something she can engineer/ encourage when meeting people.

You might emphasise the superpower angle - lifting stuff from high shelves makes people happy. She might stand more chance of buying alcohol underage than most people.

Stop replying, guys - this is a wind-up and the OP won’t be back.

LoafofSellotape · 31/05/2025 19:41

I was 5ft 11 and never minded /noticed but was so amazed everyone seemed to bang on about it 🙄 I'm in my 50s now and don't feel so tall now really.

RosyDaysAhead · 31/05/2025 20:38

Whilst you say no hormone issues etc, I would still ask for a referral - any history of Marfans in the family? Has she has a check for a pituitary growth/tumour? You say no hormone issues, but it might be worth checking other causes, especially as she is now taller than you and significantly taller than average.

DroopyEyelids · 31/05/2025 20:45

This was me two decades ago. 1) she won’t grow much more. Maybe an inch.
2) it’ll be more noticeable in smaller towns and cities. No one bats an eyelid in big cities. If you can, and it fits in with a holiday plan anyway, take her to London or Berlin and she will not feel tall at all. Any Scandinavian or Dutch city would
also to the trick.
3) once she finds another tall girl friend it isn’t so hard. I found mine at uni.
4) every rom com film shows women as dainty tiny small things that men can pick up and whisk away. That’s not real life and remind her all the reasons that is awful.

Yep!💯 Agree 100%.

clary · 31/05/2025 20:54

Those who say "this was me xx years ago" or "this is me I am really tall" – really? Are you actually a 6ft6in female with size 14 feet? and no medical reason or issues? hmmmm

If what you mean is you are really tall for a woman (like, 5ft11) then it’ s not the same.

I note that the OP has not answered any of the reasonable queries wrt medical concerns and in fact has not been back beyond a couple of very short replies. I think this is not real – which is a shame as so many MNers have given supportive and well-meaning help – as they so often will IME.

LoafofSellotape · 31/05/2025 21:56

My friend is 6 ft 4 with size 11 feet, it's not unheard of.

It is unheard of for a 12 year old girl to be 6’6 - literally.

As pp have mentioned the world record of the tallest girl at 12 is 6’2.

Since this has been pointed out the OP hasn’t returned so she’s wasted the time of a lot of people who replied in good faith.

This was you? You were 6 foot 6 at 12 years old?

Soupdragonlady · 31/05/2025 23:27

Hi, 6ft here, stopped growing at around 13. I was so shy, it was tough. Clothes are difficult, I still resent there not being as much choice. But it got easier when I found the confidence to stand up straight and own it, it’s now like a super power. Have you seen the film Tall Girl?

Why would someone make up a thread about a 6’6 12 year old girl? This place gets stranger by the day 🤣😂🤣

No idea. People are deeply weird.

Mumoftwo2022 · 31/05/2025 23:44

I think it’s a wind up too. 6ft 6 at 12. No medical condition? Very very very unlikely. News articles online show young girl at 11 is 6ft due to a rare syndrome. If OP said her daughter had a medical condition then would be more believable but saying there is no medical condition shows this is a lie. Why someone would make it up I do not know but it’s ridiculous

DinaofCloud9 · 31/05/2025 23:51

Yes I don't believe it's real and I don't believe DroopyEyelids comment they were the same size 20 years ago.

People are very odd.

Firefly1987 · 31/05/2025 23:54

I think a lot of us were fooled before someone googled the tallest height for a 12 year old girl to be fair 😆

EconomyClassRockstar · 01/06/2025 00:03

I think @Babyboomtastic wasn’t far off the mark asking if it was a biological girl. OP is probably a giant hairy bloke wishing he was a 12 yr old girl 🤮

Exactly. I'm very tall for a woman at 6'0 and have always been a head taller than any kids in my nursery/primary years (even often taller than the teacher). It was less extreme at secondary school as boys grew taller, but I still felt VERY tall. 6'6 is some extreme Guiness book of records type of height for a female 12-year-old.

Just to add, my parents took me to get all kinds of medical tests as a kid to see if they needed to intervene and stop my growth, but were advised against it as I was unlikely to grow taller than 6'0.
