This is not for a specific event, just a dress in general. My daughter doesn't wear dresses usually, so I was surprised when she bought it. I don't mind her wearing a dress, but I still wanted to ask for opinions.😁

Trendy style atm it's a knock off of Skims. Just a warning that Shein is poor quality so might end up being a bit see through.

It'll be a bit revealing as its so close fitting but personally wouldn't have an issue with it for a 15 year old, no worse than a mini skirt/dress or a particularly low cut top. Maybe wouldn't choose myself.

Arrivederla · 03/01/2025 20:14

Yes, but it doesn't make Shein any better does it?

No. But I wouldn’t berate someone for using it as that would make me a complete hypocrite. Posters acting like they have the higher ground really don’t. It’s the world we live in and we’re all supporting it.

eyestosee · 03/01/2025 20:28

And I don't think it is right either that people virtue signal by the calibre of the companies they buy from when they might have much more spending power than someone who is priced out of that kind of market.

I take your point about the chocolate and I will have a look at more ethically produced cocoa products. But... this doesn't mean that we can dismiss concerns around Shein. Yes, other producers are suspect as well - doesn't mean we can't openly criticise a company which is being investigated by US Congress and this month by a British parliamentary committee

You've got no idea how much spending power other people have. Many people (me included) prefer to buy second hand rather than buy from Shein or Temu

eyestosee · 03/01/2025 20:45

@Arrivederla no, I haven't but neither have you. So you might do great buying second hand but not everyone can. Depends on all sorts of factors. And what about cosmetics and toiletries, do you check where all of these products are manufactured? The credentials of each supplier etc etc. And the suppliers of all the ingredients? The mines mineral ingredients are mined from?

eyestosee · 03/01/2025 20:46

@Arrivederla do you use cosmetics that contain mica? Do you know the mines it is sourced from?

So your point is that we shouldn't criticise a company which there are many serious concerns about, because there are other unethical companies around as well? How does that even make sense?!

eyestosee · 03/01/2025 20:58

@Arrivederla no, my point is you shouldn't judge other people who buy from them before seriously looking at all your purchases and who you are buying from.

Very good point.

Mush62 · 04/01/2025 14:11

I don't see a problem with the dress.

PoodleFaceAche · 04/01/2025 17:59

If she cares about the planet and her future no. It's polyester, planet polluting crap and Shein are known for using child slave labour and other unethical practices. Avoid at all costs.

Can't be bothered to argue with all the posters saying you have to be perfect or shut up. Here's a link explaining why this is a bad way to argue :)

PoodleFaceAche · 04/01/2025 18:27

The planet is truly fucked going by the justifications on here for buying more cheap plastic clothing...

Birdied · 04/01/2025 20:24

Agree completely with this comment. It's very fitted and body-con and quite evening-wear in style. I'm assuming that it has a low back due to the halter neck.

Of course I agree that girls and women have the right to wear what they want etc. but it is a sad fact of life that regardless of how much we want it to be otherwise, sleezebags will always exist.

horrorcicada · 04/01/2025 20:31

Shein is the biggest fashion polluter globally. They are literally churning plastic into the ocean. We know it sucks, how hard is it to just not buy cheap crap from there?

lightsandtunnels · 04/01/2025 20:34

I agree with PPs I think it's fine and would have let my 15 yo DD wear it.

eyestosee · 04/01/2025 21:03

@PoodleFaceAche there is no justification for buying more plastic shit. But there is justification for not demonising normal people for maybe buying a single Xmas present which is the style her daughter wanted affordably, you don't know whether this is a massive habit.

What is prevalent is an awful lot of very privileged people on social media justifying huge consumption of luxury goods by arguing they are 'sustainable' (greenwashing). What is true is many of the same companies own or have huge stakes in the very same manufacturing machine that the likes of Shein and Temu use.

What I say is stop making ordinary people feel very bad and start looking at the power structures that make the whole global economy of exploitation possible,

Or is that Chinese manufacturing is only acceptable when being gatekept by the privaleged? Nearly all global companies exploit Chinese manufacturing...

Scentedjasmin · 05/01/2025 12:08

It's not exactly appropriate, but it is exactly what I would have wanted to wear at that age. It's not bad. This is a case of pick your battles and I would let it go.

TribeofFfive · 05/01/2025 16:36

Lovely dress for your DD.

MardyM · 05/01/2025 18:25

Nothing wrong with the dress, me would want her to wear with a cardi of some sort
she happy with long dress that’s great, normally they want ones so short you look at them and think wth ….. my niece is 13 - short / corset style that’s all she likes of long it’s satin look ….. have had endless arguments

Cariad10 · 05/01/2025 19:50

And mine, and my teenage grand daughters all regularly buy from shein with no issue. I am not sure what peoples issue is with it .

The use of enslaved people mainly.

Not just shein, many other fast fashion brands are also guilty.

Mush62 · 05/01/2025 21:55

It's a 15 year old kid, give her a fucking break!

Enslaved people , that is a big claim. But thank you for your response
