This is not for a specific event, just a dress in general. My daughter doesn't wear dresses usually, so I was surprised when she bought it. I don't mind her wearing a dress, but I still wanted to ask for opinions.😁

No it's not appropriate for a 15 year old.

Boys and young men manage to dress generally in stylish and flattering clothes.
But it's really sad to see so many many young girls and young women wearing ridiculous and unflattering clothes just because they think revealing as much of their body as possible is what society expects of them.

MumChp · 03/01/2025 04:18

It's fine!

It would be too revealing and it wouldn’t offer support as the straps are too thin. For a teenager that’s inappropriate and would make her vulnerable to sleazy men.

If she is busty but wears with a sporty crop top (which is what I do with this style) then it would be ok.

There are strapless Bras and frankly if you can't go braless at 15 when can you ?

You are contributing to modern day slavery then. Well done you. 🙄

This. There are many, many concerns about Shein's use of forced labour

Oh the Shein bashers are out 😂. I get my clothes from there, or supermarkets, because its all i can afford. The quality has changed enormously since Shein became mainstream, stuff is as well made as any uk high st store and lasts perfectly fine. Its pure snobbishness to look down on Shein as "fast fashion" - some people might treat it that way but many dont. I dont give a flying fig what all the toffee nosed Cos or Arket customers think.

also - yes of course its fine for a fifteen year old. If she feels comfortable wearing it then she should be allowed to wear it. We should be policing the dirty perverts who are sexualising 15 year olds not a girl wearing a dress she likes

Edited

For God's sake - it's not a question of being snobbish. There are many many serious concerns about Shein, mostly their use of forced labour.

You clearly have no idea why people are opposed to Shein. The fact it’s cheap is not the reason.

NewYearHereWeCome · 03/01/2025 11:46

No because it’s from Shein

And as someone who is ‘busty’, I do wear tops that are fitting with thin straps.

Because unless I’m wearing a tent, those boobs are in show anyway.
So yes let’s take body shale into account. But not if it means having to hide yourself because your body shale is deemed ‘too sexual’.

Same here.
You have found the styles that suit you, as have I.
Then again, I doubt either or us are 15.

Grammarnut · 03/01/2025 11:47

Not inappropriate (at least from front) but I am surprised a 15-year-old wants to wear it.

Mummyoflittledragon · 01/01/2025 08:23

There’s nothing wrong with this dress. It’s long. Fitted is fine. My 16 yo dd wears dresses like this and short ones as well.

As for skirts so short and tight you can see your underwear, they’re dressing to fit in and definitely, not dressing to get perved on by grown men. We can extol the virtues of more modest dressing til the cows come home and explain you can see their underwear but teen girls aren’t going to listen. With my dd, I told her every day the colour of her g-string so that she understood I could see it…and that I could see it from the front as she got in the car in the morning! That got her to stop hitching up her already very short skirt…

"Dressing to fit in": what a shame young people feel they have to behave like sheep.

What happened to dressing because of who you are, what your personality is, what your body type is? Not because of what everyone else is wearing.

What happened to girls and women wanting to be valued as individual people with talent and intelligence instead of having to " fit in" with the age old societal view a woman is only valued because of her body and she has to reveal as much of that as possible.

NellePorter · 03/01/2025 13:22

My 15 year old wouldn't be wearing it, but lots of 15 year olds do, I don't think it would raise any eyebrows.

Think it’s fine . It’s a classy choice but as others have mentioned, just check it isn’t see through as disco/ part lights can make material look sheerer than it is.
Also why the comments about Shein ? Political or snobby ?

Ethical.

KnickerlessParsons · 03/01/2025 15:05

Also why the comments about Shein? Political or snobby?

Neither. Have you ever wondered how clothing can be made that cheaply AND exported to the UK, with customs duties to boot?

There is a reason why other clothing outlets charge more for their clothes - you might like to investigate why.

Pointer > it's to do with how much workers are paid, what their working conditions are like and the age of the workers

TheMauveBeaker · 03/01/2025 16:25

Looks alright for that age to me, but I wouldn’t ever buy from Shein.

Definitely ethical. They are not a good company. Same with temu and cider.

Article from Elle:

In 2024, Chinese fast-fashion conglomerate Shein (previously Sheinside) has once again found itself facing allegations of unethical business practices. As well as adding to their long laundry list of wrongdoings – which includes copying small businesses, allegations of modern slavery and violating labour laws – the new research suggests Shein has made very few changes in the years since questions about it’s ethics were made public.
Even as we write this, a reported 2,000 to 10,000 new items of allegedly toxic, chemical-ridden clothing is being added to their website, while people on TikTok show off their #sheinhauls.

Sometimeswinning · 03/01/2025 16:54

I hope all the posters moaning about Shein don’t eat any chocolate? The ages of those children in the Cocoa fields has been spoke about for years. Or doesn’t that count?

TunipTheVegimal24 · 03/01/2025 18:35

Oh! To be young and slim enough to wear something like this!

TunipTheVegimal24 · 03/01/2025 18:42

True enough about the ages of child workers.

The thing with Chinese cotton though, is worse imo - did you see the thing about Uyghur genocide, and the concentration camps and forced labour? Very dark indeed. I appreciate that is a risk with all Chinese cotton though, not just Sheit😟

pollymere · 03/01/2025 18:42

At that age I'd have worn a shirt over or under it and probably DM boots! I don't think it's inappropriate unless she makes it so. And the inappropriateness would be her trying to look older than she is.

Yes, but it doesn't make Shein any better does it?

eyestosee · 03/01/2025 20:22

The thing is a lot of companies use Chinese manufacturers. Just about every cosmetics company, large clothing manufacturers, technology manufacturers, smaller 'British' companies. How well they do their homework and keep tabs of worker's rights and conditions is a moot point. Look at the history of ming for gemstones, yet how many wear naturally mined diamonds? What about antiques and how they were produced? There have been many scandals.

Do we check out every company, all their practices? Short of scandals coming to the public attention it can be quite difficult. So whilst I might not order huge amount from the likes of Shein and Temu I have before.

The thing is not to over consume.

eyestosee · 03/01/2025 20:22

Mining not ming!
