This is not for a specific event, just a dress in general. My daughter doesn't wear dresses usually, so I was surprised when she bought it. I don't mind her wearing a dress, but I still wanted to ask for opinions.😁

It's not appropriate for anyone as it is from Shein, but other than that it's fine and will probably last a couple of wears.

DD likes Disturbia, it's not all gothy even if it looks like it at first sight and the clothes are fantastic quality and they have a great returns process. The clothes are £££ full price but there are regular sales when stuff goes down to under £20

Ironfloor269 · 02/01/2025 18:39

Having being burned from buying clothes from Shein, OP, let me tell you, it’ll look NOTHING like it looks on the website. It’ll most likely be half that size, made in a much shittier material and won’t ‘drape’ as beautifully as it looks. It’ll look tacky. Trust me. I have a similar age DD and I’ve learnt this lesson the hard way.

I’d rather pay a bit more and buy a similar dress from a reputable brand.

CrushingOnRubies · 02/01/2025 18:44

I think it's very sophisticated for a 15 year old but no inappropriate to wear to a black tie NYE party or something

15/16 year olds where I work wouldn't wear much different to their prom.

willowbrookmanor · 02/01/2025 18:53

My DD has this dress, she wore it to a party with high top converse and a denim jacket. The material is very, very thick and not see through at all.

MayNov · 02/01/2025 18:55

Most 15 year olds have finished developing so most adult section clothes are appropriate for that age. However since it’s Shein she’ll be able to wear it once and a half before it falls apart.

I think it depends on her figure. If she is very busty I would say no not appropriate….And also the footwear. If it’s trainers or flats fine but heels no.

Without trying to be confrontational, the idea that girls outfits should be determined by their body shape is unfair. It’s basically telling them that their body is wrong. The dress will fit all body shapes differently and that’s OK

My boobs didn't arrive till I was around 16 or 17....I don't think that's unusual.

I don't agree....I think body shape should very much be considered when buying clothes...especially revealing clothes.

Mum to 3 girls . Thank god the days of teens are over 😱 All very close in age . I remember when shorts got very short ! I asked them to do the bendover test 🤣 Cheeks showing no go . Also the changeover from soft bras . Hoping it's not too tight and she is happy with choice . Friggin nightmare clothes shopping with teens ! I wore similar clothes in the eighties . So let her choose .

The bendover test, 😆
I am forever glad I am the mother to a male, especially nowadays.

Then you are clearly saying it’s not the clothes that are the problem but the body in them. You probably don’t realise what it does to a young woman’s self esteem to be told her body needs to be hidden but someone else’s doesn’t. I’m assuming this opinion comes from the fact that for men, breasts are sexualised and therefore their eyes must be protected.

YDBear · 02/01/2025 19:16

Nothing wrong with the dress in terms of coverage. it’s just that it’s a bit slinky for a 15yo. Hard to imagine anyone wearing this without a martini in their hand.

I am simply saying that different body shapes suit different style of clothing.

Sux2buthen · 02/01/2025 19:24

Any Shein clothes I've had have fit perfectly well and yet to have anything fall apart.
As for fast fashion; I'll be wearing what I've got for years.
I have to buy what I can afford 🤷🏻‍♀️

Could you explain why it would be inappropriate if she is ‘busty’?

NovemberMorn · 02/01/2025 19:18

I am simply saying that different body shapes suit different style of clothing.

And as someone who is ‘busty’, I do wear tops that are fitting with thin straps.

Because unless I’m wearing a tent, those boobs are in show anyway.
So yes let’s take body shale into account. But not if it means having to hide yourself because your body shale is deemed ‘too sexual’.

PinkLionFind · 02/01/2025 20:43

MyNewLife2025 · 02/01/2025 20:22

It would be too revealing and it wouldn’t offer support as the straps are too thin. For a teenager that’s inappropriate and would make her vulnerable to sleazy men.

If she is busty but wears with a sporty crop top (which is what I do with this style) then it would be ok.

I don’t in any way want to say that any body type is wrong.,..however with big boobs this is not the right type of dress as the straps would make it too revealing …..as it’s a teenager would make her vulnerable to gross men and sleazy comments.

When she is a bit older then she can wear whatever she likes but at this age I think you have to be aware of the type of attention they will get.

Beautifulweeds · 02/01/2025 21:00

Was about to reply and read the comments about shein, how snobby! My same reply is so much more tasteful than the lycra 2 pieces, long and flattering. Unfortunately girls do dress more up now than when I was younger and this is classy. Xxx

DisabledDemon · 02/01/2025 21:12

It looks lovely in the picture but I don't know what sort of quality it is so I'm not totally convinced.

It also seems a bit too sophisticated for 15 but I'm probably out of touch with what teens wear these days.

Yes, at 15 I wouldn’t really bother policing what my daughter wears as I know
full well if I tried she would just go behind my back and wear it anyway (just as I did 🤣🫠)

justasking111 · 02/01/2025 22:29

Looks similar to the sixth form ball dresses I saw last month.

She'll need that over jumper this weekend 🥶🥶

BonniesSlave · 02/01/2025 22:42

Oh the Shein bashers are out 😂. I get my clothes from there, or supermarkets, because its all i can afford. The quality has changed enormously since Shein became mainstream, stuff is as well made as any uk high st store and lasts perfectly fine. Its pure snobbishness to look down on Shein as "fast fashion" - some people might treat it that way but many dont. I dont give a flying fig what all the toffee nosed Cos or Arket customers think.

also - yes of course its fine for a fifteen year old. If she feels comfortable wearing it then she should be allowed to wear it. We should be policing the dirty perverts who are sexualising 15 year olds not a girl wearing a dress she likes

Bunny65 · 02/01/2025 22:47

At 15 she will have her own ideas. It looks fine to me. At that age I remember men staring at me when I wore a mini dress and even a short trenchcoat.

LouisvilleSlugger · 03/01/2025 00:14

Please educate yourself and your daughter about Shein before you spend your money there.
