It’s cold where l live.

All windows at school are open due to Corona. Dd has one day where she is sat next to a window 3 lessons in a row. Her hands are too cold to write. She goes outside, gets wet and then sits by an open cold window. She had thermal vests, but will not wear a coat. She admits she’s freezing.

At least a coat would keep the rain off. What do l do. It gets really cold where l am. She moans she’s cold all the time. It’s going to get much worse in mid winter.

😖any advice?

Does she not even wear a warm jacket? If that was ds I would start by telling him not to complain to me until he wears his jacket /coat.

Frequentcarpetflyer · 23/10/2020 16:17

Tell her to wear a coat?

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 23/10/2020 16:19

Well I would tell her to wear a coat or suck it up.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/10/2020 16:29

She refuses point blank! I’ve tried to buy her one, she just won’t engage.

I’ve told her to stop moaning. She’s always hated them. Mostly we’ve got by, but this year is a bit different.

Would you impose sanctions? I don’t bloody know what to do.

What is her reason for not wanting to wear a coat?

How old is she?

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/10/2020 16:31

And she doesn’t have any sort of thick coat. She’s got a rainproof thing which she won’t wear either.

HighNetGirth · 23/10/2020 16:31

Ignore the moaning until she is prepared to discuss outerwear.

Redlocks28 · 23/10/2020 16:32

Would you impose sanctions?

I think the sanctions are self-imposed! If she won’t wear a coat, she’ll have to be cold.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/10/2020 16:32

She’s 14. Her main reason is awkwardness.

But she has a few sensory issues and she says they make her feel like she’s in a straight jacket.

But would you have a ‘just in case coat’ ?

God she’s a pain

My DD will not wear a coat either (too bulky, apparently!) but she will wear gloves. I got her leather ones - they are surprisingly warm, water-resistant, and come in lots of different colours.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/10/2020 16:34

She won’t wear gloves, hats or scarves. She’s going to be too cold to do any work😡

HelloDulling · 23/10/2020 16:34

Would a padded gilet be less restrictive?

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/10/2020 16:34

Yes, and she’s says too bulky too. But that’s just one reason...

OP posts:
hoxt · 23/10/2020 16:35

Buy a coat. Leave it by the door. Do not engage any further.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/10/2020 16:35

She won’t wear a gillet.

Is she in thermal tights, and long sleeve vest?

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/10/2020 16:36

Cheap coat, or one that she might actually wear.?

We did find one after hours of searching. But they didn’t have her size. Now as that one wasn’t available she won’t wear anymore

Undies1990 · 23/10/2020 16:36

Nothing you can do about this except ignore her moaning. She needs to learn to make sensible decisions at 14 or stop moaning. Don't indulge her and don't discuss it - she knows the answer to the problem.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/10/2020 16:37

Yep, thermal tights, long sleeve thermal t shirt. She gets cold wearing it in a centrally heated house....

I buy mine coats and whether they wear them or not is up to them. My dd is the on,y child in the whole school who wears the school jumper under her blazer.

I'd tell her she has to do the work! Otherwise there is no point in going to school. Being too cold to write is not a good enough excuse because she wouldn't be too cold to write if she wore a coat.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/10/2020 16:38

I swear she won’t wear one deliberately.

OP posts:
TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/10/2020 16:39

But do you buy coats that they’ve chosen? Or just a random coat?

OP posts:
yikesanotherbooboo · 23/10/2020 16:41

I would ignore her but make sure that she knows you are prepared to buy her a school appropriate coat when she wants one.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/10/2020 16:42

I’m happy to buy her one. If she doesn’t wear it, l can sell it. But she won’t even engage in choosing.

So l don’t know what to buy. And how do l sanction someone who won’t help me choose?😖
