Coats, teens and open school windows.

It’s cold where l live.

All windows at school are open due to Corona. Dd has one day where she is sat next to a window 3 lessons in a row. Her hands are too cold to write. She goes outside, gets wet and then sits by an open cold window. She had thermal vests, but will not wear a coat. She admits she’s freezing.

At least a coat would keep the rain off. What do l do. It gets really cold where l am. She moans she’s cold all the time. It’s going to get much worse in mid winter.

😖any advice?

She's treating you quite badly and you are dancing around her with countless thermal vests and coats.

You don't want to 'waste money' on a coat but you will buy silk thermals and USB rechargeable scarfs.

Buy a coat, if you haven't already got one in her size from one of your three other teenagers, hang it in the cupboard.

Provide other standard UK winter clothing. Say 'here are your gloves, vests, hat and scarf for the winter. Your coat is in the cupboard.' Then stop talking to her about it and trying to cajole her.

Get her some wrist warmers from Turtle Doves. They are recycled cashmere.

Thermos with warm tea?

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 24/10/2020 21:48

Because she will wear silk thermals.

No I’m not spoiling her, unless wanting her to be warm and dry is spoiling herConfused.

Anyway it’s sorted now.

And l only said the scarf looked good so as not to upset the kind poster who found it.

She has never worn a scarf as she doesn’t like them.

I have boys with sensory issues. Coats, gloves and scarves have been a real challenge. I have always worked with them to find solutions that work for them. I don't see the point in buying a coat and then absolving yourself of all responsibility. Effort has to come from her in finding a solution and being willing to explore various options but recognise that there isn't a simple solution, it's going to take a bit of trial and error.

She’s agreed in snowy days to wear an extra thermal and hoodie and a lightweight waterproof coat. Best l can get😖

Umbrella?

Copperblack · 25/10/2020 07:58

No self respecting teenager wears a coat. And the cold will give them something ‘valid’ to moan about so I wouldn’t stress about it. When she complains, sympathise and say if she ever wants a coat, you are happy to get one and move on.

Hmm
JoanApple · 25/10/2020 08:13

Wear a coat or be cold.

megletthesecond · 25/10/2020 08:21

I have a sensory coat dodger too. Her older brother has always worn a coat when it's cold.

She's never learnt a lesson about layering up either. I just get the full force of meltdowns when she's struggled and is miserable.

What a load of rubbish.

Acinonyx2 · 26/10/2020 09:40

Similar here. I sat with Dd to choose a hoodie type jacket online that she would wear (she doesn't have anything like that already, unusually so I'm hoping to get good use out of it). I did also get vests. School has said they can were this type of thing and/or a coat. If it gets really stupidly cold I'm hoping she will relent and wear a coat but I suspect not. But that's up to her at that point I've done my bit.

EvilPea · 26/10/2020 09:48

What about an umbrella?

Apologies if it’s been suggested already, skimmed through and couldn’t see it!

I was a coat dodger until recently due to suits and coats not going. Too much bulk and it all getting caught up. Umbrellas are the answer and there’s some lovely ones, LED etc. Just tell her not to put it in her bag.

Re-usable hand warmers to at least warm up her hands when they have got cold?
