Coats, teens and open school windows.

It’s cold where l live.

All windows at school are open due to Corona. Dd has one day where she is sat next to a window 3 lessons in a row. Her hands are too cold to write. She goes outside, gets wet and then sits by an open cold window. She had thermal vests, but will not wear a coat. She admits she’s freezing.

At least a coat would keep the rain off. What do l do. It gets really cold where l am. She moans she’s cold all the time. It’s going to get much worse in mid winter.

😖any advice?

Well sofa blankets are a thing these days.

Over knees in class seems reasonable if windows open.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/10/2020 16:56

Ok Sounds.

I’ve brought up 4 teens. What do l know?🤷🏼‍♀️

She broke the mould.

Sounds- l just don’t get what you are driving at.

Yeah, I’ll go buy her one this evening. She won’t wear it cos she won’t like it.

For hands those wrist warmer thingys are great. I have lovely cashmere ones but wouldn't be so extravagant for DD. Maybe you could get fleecy ones?

MrsVeryTired · 23/10/2020 16:57

Billie Eilish would wear a massive coat! I've definitely seen her in a duvet style coat. Or an oversized sweater, would school allow that? Billie Eilish fashion is great for teens who like to be comfortable, I like her Smile

Why are some schools insisting on wide open windows? Sounds OTT to me, Thankfully ds school has made it clear they are going to take a common sense approach, if it’s cold /windy/ pouring rain then windows will be closed. I work in a nursery school, there’s no way I’m freezing our kids to death this winter.
Guidance is that all areas should be well ventilated. www.gov.uk/government/publications/actions-for-schools-during-the-coronavirus-outbreak/guidance-for-full-opening-schools#section-1-public-health-advice-to-minimise-coronavirus-covid-19-risks

See point eight.

If this was my school I’d be making a complaint because I would feel my child wasn’t safe.

RitaConnors · 23/10/2020 16:58

She's not going to choose a coat. You need to get her a coat. She can't have no coat!

I'd buy a coat and not listen to another word about her being bloody cold. Of course she's cold if she won't wear a coat.Confused

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/10/2020 16:58

I’ll discuss wrist warmers

I'd probably buy a lightweight plain looking waterproof jacket that can be stuffed in her bag and then just leave her to it. You sound like you have tried. Just refuse to listen to any complaints of being cold at school until she is willing to help herself.

GreyishDays · 23/10/2020 16:59

Would she wear a very big black teddy bear fleece/furry thing? A hooded one, not a long one. (Well, either.)

shumway · 23/10/2020 17:01

Would a coatigan work?

The windows are supposed to be open! You can't just say there is 'no way' you will be doing it!

Are you a nursery teacher?

MissSarahThane · 23/10/2020 17:02

Would she wear a wrap or poncho style? Not fitted or fastened, so shouldn't feel restrictive.

dingit · 23/10/2020 17:03

My daughter ( who does wear a coat) has a huge scarf from primark that doubles as a blanket. Any good?

zaphodbeeble · 23/10/2020 17:04

Lots of our pupils are bringing blankets to class

MrsScrubbingbrush · 23/10/2020 17:05

I bought my DDs (14) )a very lightweight but very warm padded coats from Uniglo in sizes that fitted over their blazers. They happily wear them to school.

Maybe I'm just lucky in that they're ok wearing coats (and hats, gloves etc) as they hate being cold.!

I have been known to borrow DD1's coat and I love it. Hardly know I'm wearing a coat.

Rather than get her a coat I’d get her a down collarless jacket from Uniqlo. They’re very light but also very warm. Also merino full arm thermals. I just got a running top from M&S which doesn’t feel restrictive but is really warm. If she has to wear a blazer I fully sympathise with her feeling uncomfortable. If I were her I’d want thin, light layers that leave you able to move

bestbefore · 23/10/2020 17:10

Can you take her shopping to choose one she might like? In a "cool" shop? I like these ones from hollister for example and my dd did at that age.. www.hollisterco.com/shop/uk/p/cozy-lined-parka-41094319?categoryId=85303&seq=14&faceout=model1 - if she can see something in the shop it might help perhaps?
Or maybe she can try on?

SunnySomer · 23/10/2020 17:10

Oh, cross post w Mrs scrubbing brush!

CoffeeBeansGalore · 23/10/2020 17:12

This is from La redoute. Not a silly price either.

Coats, teens and open school windows.

Liking blanket idea
Willow have gorgeous silky fleece blankets for a £5- small and light enough to squash into school bag and may be silky enough to be desirable (though we both know she ought to just put a bloody coat on!!)
fabulousathome · 23/10/2020 17:15

Uniqulo padded coats are so light and comfortable. They pack into a small bag.

MrsWooster · 23/10/2020 17:15
