It’s cold where l live.

All windows at school are open due to Corona. Dd has one day where she is sat next to a window 3 lessons in a row. Her hands are too cold to write. She goes outside, gets wet and then sits by an open cold window. She had thermal vests, but will not wear a coat. She admits she’s freezing.

At least a coat would keep the rain off. What do l do. It gets really cold where l am. She moans she’s cold all the time. It’s going to get much worse in mid winter.

😖any advice?

Hat and also gloves or wrist warmers with thumb holes in wool or natural fibres - much warmer. I get you though as daughter has just this year agreed to wear a jumper - not got onto the coat issue yet

HighNetGirth · 23/10/2020 17:25

Would a fleece gilet be accepted? If not, the cape and blanket ideas sound good.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/10/2020 17:26

What’s Willow? Can’t find it.

Matalan do some cheap fluffy blankets

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 23/10/2020 17:27

@TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince

Oh, she does her work. She’s really hardworking. She’s just cold.
But you said "Her hands are too cold to write"

Which is it?

Look, contact school, let them know she is cold, tell them she will not wear a coat. Ultimately it is up to her but at least let school know that this is her decision. Maybe they can talk some sense into her.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 23/10/2020 17:27

It's called natural consequences.
Go out when it's raining with no coat, you get wet, oce wet you feel cold by the open window.
If the coat is availible for her to take to school and she doesn't take it ignore her moaning.
Explain one time, if don't like being cold/wet/miserable then do something about it and take a coat. If you don't I'm not interested in your complaints.
Life lesson for her.

Frequentcarpetflyer · 23/10/2020 17:28

@zaphodbeeble

Lots of our pupils are bringing blankets to class
I didn't think any school, would allow that! I know someone who isn't even allowed to wear thermals.
zaphodbeeble · 23/10/2020 17:29

Why wouldn’t it be allowed ? I’m a secondary teacher, they’ve all got them, many wear gloves too

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/10/2020 17:32

They are too cold to write. But she blows on them or rubs them to make them a bit warmer.

Frequent how on earth would the school know if you were wearing thermals?

I used to regularly wear longjohns/leggings under trousers and a long sleeved thermal vest under my shirt in winter. Given they were under my clothes I don't really understand how the school could object?

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/10/2020 17:33

I can do all the natural consequences.

The issue is that she doesn’t have a coat atm, won’t engage in looking at one. If she has one and then won’t wear it, that’s her problem. But first the first problem is getting her to look at a coat!

For God's sake. You've been told dozens of times. Buy her a coat. Leave her to it and don't entertain any more of her nonsense.
TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/10/2020 17:39

But then am l not wasting money if she doesn’t like it?

I don't know, I suppose the blouses are so thin that the thermals can be seen through the fabric?

If she refuses to wear it, you can sell it on next year. This 'problem' really isn't as complicated as you're making out.
AChickenCalledDaal · 23/10/2020 17:45

Teenage girls are weird. My 15yo went into town in shorts today. Also doesn't have a coat that fits and refuses to engage with the idea of choosing one. She knows I'll very happily buy one when the moment comes, but I am also reluctant to waste my money right now. I'll leave blankets, gloves and hats littered around the place in the hope she might accidentally pick one up and discover it's a good idea.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/10/2020 17:55

Chicken, l bets she’s always cold at home though! There seems to be a direct connection between refusal to wear a coat and feeling extra cold at home.

Sensory related coat dodger here as well.
Fleece hoodies that are bigger seem to be acceptable coat wear here.

The poncho cover things are also amazing. If you know how to crochet granny squares, surprisingly quick to make. Also made a patchwork ones years ago

You have a responsibility to provide the coat. This really could not be any simpler.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/10/2020 18:10

Fishie- you’ve really got it in for me!!!😁

I know it is!!! That’s why I’m having this battle with her.

Is fleece waterproof?

OP posts:
IronLawOfGeometricProgression · 23/10/2020 18:14

What about a fleece, a waterproof fleece or one of those throw over poncho type things?

Is there anything you condo with the rest of for uniform to make her more comfortable ?

Fajitanita · 23/10/2020 18:14

It also depends if other people in the class are wearing them imo, if I was 14 and no one else was I wouldn't either, it's tough at that age and you dont want to be standing out. Hopefully people will soon realise it is cold and start wearing them, then you can maybe choose one together, fingers crossed.

IronLawOfGeometricProgression · 23/10/2020 18:17

Debenhams had loads of little Regatta quilted jackets in the sale last week. They're pretty comfy. I can't stand being trussed up either.

I think schools should abandon uniform in the current crisis.

Sweetchillijam · 23/10/2020 18:18

OP It’s cold where I live in the north of England. DD in the same boat in year 11 trying to concentrate on GCSE catch up work and all windows in all classrooms are open so she’s absolutely freezing. The kids aren’t allowed to wear coats in school ‘as it affects their learning and the teachers need to be able to see the year group flash on their jumpers’. Yet some of the teachers teach in coats, hats, scarves etc. Its ridiculous.
On the plus side DD has a shower most nights as soon as she gets home to warm her up.
She also doesn’t like to wear a coat for school either as now they have no access to lockers, they won’t fit in school bags and they have to carry it around all day.
