Did anyone else dress their babies in babygros all day every day until they were 11/12 months old?

I put some of DS baby clothes in the paper stating that it was mostly vests, babygrows and a few outfits. A lady rang up and said she wanted to come and see them. When she got here she said,

"Oh is that all the outfits you've got?"

I said "Yes I did put in the advert there weren't many. He didn't start wearing proper clothes until the next size. Until then my DS wore babygros all day every day pretty much" .

With a goldfish type face "What even when you went out?"

"Erm, yes"

Was I weird in doing that? No one ever commented if I was!!

I did. I think ()

It's been a looong time.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 20/03/2009 15:15

Yes I did.
It was only when he started needing to wear shoes that I felt the need to dress him in proper clothes.

TheApprentice · 20/03/2009 15:17

I had planned to, but didnt as both dss were given some lovely outfits for when they were tiny. But to be honest I think babygros are much more sensible and practical! also they look very cute in pretty much anything at that age.

BunnyLebowski · 20/03/2009 15:18

I do this!!

DD is 5 months and she pretty much wears babygrows all the time unless we're off somewhere posh!

I really don't see the point in dressing a baby up in nice tops/troosers/socks etc every day when they're gonna spew/dribble/throw food all over themselves!

And at the rate she's growing, it would be a mad waste of money to buy her lots of clothes in every size!

Plus it makes changing nappies easier! Slummy mummies unite!

(P.s in my defence they are really nice babygrows!)

nappyaddict · 20/03/2009 15:18

Kathy - how old was yours when he went into proper clothes?

Kathyis6incheshigh · 20/03/2009 15:21

He was around 1, which coincided with him starting nursery full time and needing the shoes for toddling around outside.

DD wore proper clothes from much younger, but that was partly because she was a pfb and partly because it was the summer and I was trying to find things that covered her skin up but kept her cool, so pretty dresses or loose trousers served the purpose better.

RinkyDinkyPinky · 20/03/2009 15:24

My DDs wore babygros for ab 6-7 months and I only went to leggings/ t-shirts when we started solids because it's easier to change a top than the whole thing.
Also found it's nice to play with their toes in trousers.
And I read that having toes free helps with crawling becasue they can feel the floor more easily.

I really don't like it when people dress their babies up in baby- sized versions of adult clothes. I want my DD to feel comfy.

CrushWithEyeliner · 20/03/2009 15:25

I did as much as possible - it was just the way I liked to see a baby - all comfy and cosy in soft cotton - DD also has excema so she would rash in the scratchy demin type stuff. Tbh I don't really like outfits on any baby, can't exactly explain why though....

Divvy · 20/03/2009 15:25

Me too, he is wearing one now! I hate him in outfits! Ok he may look cute, but he dont feel nice to hold, and the clothes ride up...yuk yuk!

Plus when he poos it goes everywhere, so vest and gros are so easy to wash on high temps!

HeadFairy · 20/03/2009 15:26

I did, ds wore nothing but until he was about 5/6 months old. Too much hassle I thought. But then I hadn't at that point attempted to get a wriggling toddler in to dungarees

doggiesayswoof · 20/03/2009 15:27

Not every day, but a lot of the time. The only real clothes either of mine wore were presents.

Started getting dd in outfits just before she was 1, ds is 10 months and wears proper outfits most days now.

I don't see a lot of babies in babygros when I'm out and about though so I thought I was a bit unusual.

Divvy · 20/03/2009 15:30

Thing is though as we have just had winter, he wears a all in one snow suit when out, so no one knew whet he had on underneath really.

Jojay · 20/03/2009 15:30

Ds! did, but Ds2 didn't - too cold this winter for just babygros so he wore cosy fleecy dungarees.

I hate tight things round their little fat tummies

CarGirl · 20/03/2009 15:32

I hated babygros, too many poppers. Pj's or nighties at night and dresses or trousers or tops during the day - just quicker for nappy changes.

didn't do all the frilly mini me stuff just comfy clothes.

LittleHarrysMum · 20/03/2009 15:40

Ds was in baby grows until he was about one. And even then if we weren't going out he would stay in one all day (a clean one!)

DD is oly 4 months but I have dressed her up a bit more but again only comfy clothes no frilly dresses can't be bothered with all that.

Also what I hate is when they sell outfits for really little babies that have a normal t-shirt tyoe top underneath and not a popper-bottomed top (think I just made up a word there!) The tops ride up and must be really uncomfy!

nappyaddict · 20/03/2009 15:43

Jojay and LHM - how many months were your DS1/DS when they went into proper clothes?

OP posts:
KingRolo · 20/03/2009 15:48

I prefer separtate tops and bottoms then you can just change one half as and when you need to - which is quite often!

I also found babygros not warm enough for winter - rather have vest and tights with cotton trousers tops over them.

tattycoram · 20/03/2009 15:50

I didn't with my pfb but I would if we have another baby. They look so sweet. I would put them in nothing but plain white when they were tiny and then spots and stripes until at least 8 months.

Ceebee74 · 20/03/2009 15:50

I always dressed my 2 in normal clothes from day 1 - mainly because I read somewhere that it helps them distinguish between day and night and because I love baby clothes - babygros are boring

BitOfFun · 20/03/2009 15:52

I used babygros until 12 months plus IIRC...thy looked cute and cuddly with a little handknitted cardi on top. If they made them for adults it would cut my sartorial agonising at a stroke

noddyholder · 20/03/2009 15:55

My ds is 14 and always looks back at his baby pictures and asks why he didn't have 'fashion'!Baby gros and hand knit cardies here too u ntil quite big and after that still no fashiony stuff I hate babies in clothes and shoes unneccesary

nanninurse · 20/03/2009 15:56

Baby gros are practical warm and comfortable for babies , they look so uncomfortable in clothes. I agree about the tightness around the tummy area too, they need freedom..
I think its just a marketing ploy to get us to spend money on baby outfits that they don't need.
We put cardigans over babygro's & tights underneath if necessary.

MerlinsBeard · 20/03/2009 15:57

mine were only in them for sleep after the first 2/3 weeks

mloo · 20/03/2009 15:58

When I was pregnant with my first, everyone told me "Just use baby gros, lot less hassle". And I did, for the first 2-3 months. But then I joined a post-natal group and I noticed that everyone else always had their babies in proper outfits. I didn't like being odd one out so I switched to outfits, too.

DS3 is 13 months & still wears babygros at night, tho'.

jemart · 20/03/2009 16:01

I don't like baby grows very much, too many poppers. We use them for night time but always change baby into day clothes for outings.
