Oil cleansing method

Thank you to the mumsnetter who mentionned this a few days ago! I looked it up and have done it a couple of times, and it is fantastic! It has made such an amazing difference to my skin in such a short time: it is much clearer, softer, with no dry patches, and some old stubborn blackheads are finally gone. And it is cheap! What's not to like!

For anyone interested more info here

just checking in ... have been doing this for nearly 2 weeks now, blend of almond and castor oils ... definitely working. And so cheap!! Thanks loads christiana!

LilRedWG · 03/04/2009 12:29

I'm going to start giving this a go and see how I do. I remember seeing an interview years ago with Catherine Zeta Jones who said that she uses olive oil and salt as an exfoliator.

kittywise · 03/04/2009 12:32

It's a great thing to do isn't it. I use a blend of about 6 different oils now, my skin is always so soft

LilRedWG · 03/04/2009 12:33

Not sure what oils to use as not sure what skin type I have. I'll start with some oilive and castor oil and take it from there I think.

McDreamy · 03/04/2009 12:33

How often are you supposed to do it? And if not everyday what do you use in between? Just water or your normal skincare products?

McDreamy · 03/04/2009 12:34

Oh and can you add a drop of essential oil for a nice smell?

kittywise · 03/04/2009 12:35

Yes, whatever you like, Rose and jasmine are lovely. I have geranium and rose in mine

mananny · 03/04/2009 12:52

I have rosacea and my skin reacts to everything I put on it, but I've been doing this with olive oil, almond oil and a few drops of rose oil for a month now and my skin has calmed right down and the redness seems to be lessening! I have spent literally thousands in the last 10 years on skincare products to try and sort out my skin. Who'd have thunk it that $5 worth of oils could sort it all out in a matter of days??!! I have recommended this method to all my friends but they are a bit about it as they are germophobic purists who think it's gross to put kitchen supplies on your face, but ok to lather yourself in parabens and chemicals. I'm a convert though

Can anyone recommend a good natural based SPF cream? I have been using the last of my Anthelios SX but would prefer something less chemical if there is such a thing out there?

Queenoftheharpies · 03/04/2009 12:56

Be careful with steam if you have rosacea though. I have it too and any extremes of temperature will give me a red face for days afterwards. Steam is bad for broken veins as well.

mananny · 03/04/2009 13:27

I use tepid water for this and it seems to be working ok, the oil penetrates and softens my skin and it takes two or three tepid pat/rinses with the flannel to get most of it off. I have had to get used to tepid showers, no hot sunny holidays, limited red wine and curries (get the violins out)...

I think the benefits of the oils is worth the not quite hot enough flannels though. My skin has definitely improved. I wish I could use very hot flannels as I bet it feels lovely!

Queenoftheharpies · 03/04/2009 14:23

I might give it a go then - I was a bit skeptical before but rosacea is an absolute bugger to fix. Up to now, mine has only improved with a 6 month course of antibiotics which being pg and eventually bf, I won't be able to take for ages.

LetThemEatCake · 05/04/2009 14:58

2 weeks in and I'm utterly convinced. My skin looks amazing, the horrible preggo hormone spots around my jawline have gone, my pores even look smaller! and when I massage my skin, you can feel that there is no congestion, no horrible muck under the surface waiting to spring out.

Fantastic, will definitely be spreading the word.

TsarChasm · 05/04/2009 15:08

Gosh isn't it good! I am also sold on this, and I usually use quite expensive skin products.

I only started last Tuesday, and the result was amazing.

I'd have been very happy with this outcome if I'd spent a fortune on it, but to have it for just a couple of quid is incredible!

MayorNazeNotWithChoccyEggs · 05/04/2009 15:32

didn't do this for a week after overdoing (see further down thread), am now doing it every 3-4 nights and am still marvellously impressed. takes mascara off beautifully and spots seem to lurk, then disappear totally instead of erupting like small volcanoes!

only use olive oil as well (am too cheap and lazy to buy other luscious things)

mummypig · 05/04/2009 15:49

I use olive oil too, usually with a few drops of chammomile and lavender in.

I bought the Eve Lom cleanser with a voucher last year for my birthday and was very impressed but knew it would be possible to do it far more cheaply. As far as I am aware the only reason she has the other stuff in is to make it more solid and less like just putting oil on your face. Once you get used to the idea of doing just that, it's fine!

The great thing is that it seems to be good for both oily skin and dry skin. Trying to get my sister to do it too as she has very sensitive skin and usually reacts to commercial cleansers, even the ones marketed as being gentle.

PurlyQueen · 05/04/2009 16:08

I've been using almond oil for the past three months and my skin hasn't glowed like this since I was pregnant! No blemishes, no spots - I'm hooked!

TracyK · 05/04/2009 20:15

What do you girls do in the inbetween days for washing your face?

I've done the OCM for 2 nights now and this will be my third - don't want to overdo it - but don't want to overstimulate my skin by using too harsh a face wash.

cherrysunday · 05/04/2009 21:22

Hi just to say I'm another convert! Started 4 nights ago with grapeseed oil as that's all I had and my skin has improved dramatically already!

I'm so happy! Have had such bad spots for the last few years possibly from 2 pregnancies and was getting quite down about it...All the spots have gone!

Haven't even tried the castor oil yet! Might give olive oil ago tonight.

By the way what do people think of using grapeseed oil? Can't find anything on ther website. Seems to be working brilliantly for me anyway!

Also such a relief not to have to spend lot's of money anymore!

Thanks so much op!

MrsMerryBunnyGirlHenry · 05/04/2009 21:26

I've been doing this since Christiana posted it too. It's been about 10 days, and my skin is definitely glowing and much clearer than ever. Thanks, C! and a big hug to you.

Alibabaandthe40bunnies · 05/04/2009 22:16

Mine is fab too! I'm doing the OCM every 2-3 days and inbetween I use my normal facewash - a Champneys one that I've used for years and love. Where this is saving me a load of cash is that I'm not buying different exfoliators and masks and all that other stuff, and my skin looks fantastic.

I've had very small but very stubborn blackheads on my nose for almost 20 years now (they aren't noticable until up v.v close but I know they are there!), and they are finally going.

TracyK · 06/04/2009 07:53

I've been reading through this forum for OCM. V interesting.

It looks like some people just wash with water on the in between days. Not sure I'd feel clean enough - so have some really mild organic, sls free face wash so will use it.

MrsMcCluskey · 06/04/2009 19:22

I use my normal N07 stuff on in between days, do the OCM every 2nd-3rd night.
Even DH has noticed my skin looks better!

I will also give this a try. Thank you OP. It sounds fabulous.

Vamonos · 07/04/2009 15:08

ooh it does seem good - I have tried it with both olive oil and sunflower oil and skin now v soft.

The sunflower oil seems better in terms of moisturising (my skin's quite dry) and also doesn't have as much smell.

I expect visitors are wondering about the litre of sunflower oil residing on our bathroom shelf though - must remember to decant it sometime.

I'm using a bit of sunflower oil as night-time moisturiser as well, is that allowed?!

Haven't tried castor oil yet as can't find any, our local chemist woman insisted they don't make it any more.
