Oil cleansing method

Thank you to the mumsnetter who mentionned this a few days ago! I looked it up and have done it a couple of times, and it is fantastic! It has made such an amazing difference to my skin in such a short time: it is much clearer, softer, with no dry patches, and some old stubborn blackheads are finally gone. And it is cheap! What's not to like!

For anyone interested more info here

Coco, that sounds like a result
No unprompted (or otherwise) complements here as yet, but then it's only day one and I do have a big red spot on my cheek . My face feels comfy though, more supple.

mammya, I thought though that the caster oil was the part that disolves the dirt? Or does all oil do that?

mammya · 28/05/2009 00:00

Sazisi, I think all oils disolve the dirt, the castor oil is meant to help draw out the dirt from the pores, so it gives a really deep clean. I might still use some once in a while, if I feel my skin needs it, but if I use it regularly I get horrible dry patches.

If anybody was looking for coconut oil, Holland and Barrett had a big tub of it.

creamcaramella · 29/05/2009 00:54

Hi! I think i might be overdoing it because i rarely breakout and now i have. skin still feels lovely though. I also have the in-between spot on my chin too. So i guess i'll be doing it max twice a week or weekly, then do the Clinique 3-step daily.

wastingmyeducation · 04/06/2009 12:09

I've been doing the OCM for about a week and like it, but am getting dry flaky skin on my nose and having to use moisturiser.

I think I may be over-wiping with the cloth.

Is everyone using moisturiser?
Or using some oil as moisturiser?

IrritableGrizzly · 05/06/2009 14:22

I read something interesting the other day about coconut oil not being good for acne prone skin, so I'm going to try again with a castor/e.v.o. oil mix and see how that goes. I really did enjoy the whole oil massage and steaming routine so I don't want to give it up, but my spots got really bad after a while using coconut oil. Fingers crossed!

Heated · 06/06/2009 22:28

Being doing OCM for 3 weeks (castor oil about 10-20% & kukui nut oil which is meant to be good for dry skin and blemishes) & all was going well but now I have what looks like little raised bumps on my forehead under the skin. Anyone else had this? Is this the breakout period or maybe I need to change the oil?

aiden · 08/06/2009 14:54

hi all, I've done the oil cleansing three times now, four days apart. It started really well but now my entire face has come in spots. It is so bad that I thought maybe I'm having an allergic reaction aginst the oils (caster oil? I use sunflower oil in my cooking, so that's not it).

My sister suggested maybe this the begining process of the oil breaking down the dirt. I thought maybe I haven't done it right because first time i washed my face with simple before the oil treatment. i have changed the ratio of castor oil to sunflower oil to about 1:9, and my face still looks like the wicked witch (i'm not joking; my dd keeps touching my face because she doesn't get it)

pleasee help! what am i doing wrong?

Vamonos · 10/06/2009 02:36

I've come to the conclusion that castor oil is weeeeeird shit! If you put some neat onto your hand for example, it's almost impossible to wash off, so wouldn't it be likely to clog pores??? Dunno.

I abandoned the castor oil after a couple of weeks and just used sunflower oil and it seemed fine.

HOWEVER I've now had to abandon even that as it was buggering up my contact lenses and making them go all scummy Has anyone else had that?

I was using the oil to remove eye make-up, but not when the lenses were in - however the oil seemed to get into my eyes/lids and stay there till next morning when I put my lenses in, argh.

toffeeapple · 18/06/2009 11:16

7 weeks of doing it: only with jojoba oil.
Well, I still seem to have my "half way in half way out" tiny blackheads.
Sometimes I feel some of them come out during the day if I'm rubbing my chin or something (disgusting but they are kind of dry when they come out).
Maybe it's a slow process.
Heated: I too am getting those underneath spots at the top of my forehead. I've realized that it was because I tended to leave that part of my face out when massaging with oil, or at least not rubbing as much over that part in case some oil gets to my hairline, and since I've started paying more attention to it and rubbing it more, the "underneath" spots have disappeared.
Try that maybe.
I think I need to exfoliate dayly, but I've tried with caster sugar and oil and it doesn't seem to do much and it kind of feels harsh.
What else can I do?

toffeeapple · 18/06/2009 11:21

PS: This time I didn't get any spots at all before my period. Just one on my back.

MumHadEnough · 27/06/2009 17:38

Oh Ladies, I'm so excited reading this thread! do you really think this could work for me?

I've suffered terribly over the past few years, with papules and pustules all over the place. Spent most of the last two years swallowing tetracycline to clear it.

However, a few weeks ago my gp prescribed me a topical roll on called Dalacin T, which has cleared my skin up immensely. I have a small dry patch on my chin which is currently being treat with Daktacort.

However, about an hour after my "routine" it still looks as if you could fry chips on my face, so wonder if this could cure my excessive oil production?

My current routine is;

Wash face with either coal tar soap or lush coalface.
Apply Dalacin T and allow to dry.
Apply small amount of Daktacort to dermatitis patch on chin and allow to dry.
Apply either Lush Enzymion or Avon mattifying moisturiser.

So far this is working and my skin is the best its been in years. However, I would like to get rid of the oil problem but I'm scared of doing this in case it all flares up again.

Do you think I should give it a go?

MumHadEnough · 28/06/2009 15:44

Anyone?

ruddynorah · 28/06/2009 15:54

yes give it a go!

i'm on about my 3rd month on it. skin never been better. i use olive oil 90% and castor oil 10% both from boots. then steam with hot flannel and gently wipe off with same flannel once it's cooled. it gets rid of waterproof mascara and everything. i no longer get spots at all. well worth it.

MumHadEnough · 28/06/2009 19:59

Okay, gonna give it a go

Have ordered some castor, jojoba, grapeseed and I have some nice olive oil in the fridge.

Will update soon.

MumHadEnough · 28/06/2009 20:00

No I don't, I have some in the cupboard .

mum2samandalex · 01/07/2009 14:23

is this supposed to bring me out in spot? At first it seemd to make my pores cleaning but not ive got tiny white heads and blackhend that are hanging out iykwim is this just it bringing all the crap out? Im just using olive oil at the moment?

MumHadEnough · 01/07/2009 23:23

Hi,

Well I've just did my first OCM. Mix of 30% castor oil and added a 20% mix of grapeseed, jojoba and almond, then the remaining 50% with extra virgin olive oil.

It felt lovely, like a mini facial. Then I had to go and spoil it all with the topical anti-biotics that I need to put on twice a day . Will update over the next week with how I get on.

Sorry i can't help mum2samandalex as obviously just starting myself. Was this just your first attempt?

mum2samandalex · 02/07/2009 00:14

ive been doing it for a few days and its gradually bringing me out in spots. Not sure if this is just clearing the skin. Can anyone advise???

rupertsabear · 02/07/2009 06:20

It has made my spots worse too!

mum2samandalex · 02/07/2009 12:16

anyone?????

ruddynorah · 02/07/2009 12:19

yes that shows it's working! my skin is absolutely gorgeous after 3 months of ocm. i get soo many compliments. stick at it!

MumHadEnough · 02/07/2009 12:21

How often do you do it ruddynorah?

ruddynorah · 02/07/2009 12:23

every morning. at night i just wipe my face with a hot flannel.

ruddynorah · 02/07/2009 12:24

also i love that i don't have greasy skin anymore. it used to be soooo oily. in this weather my skin would be an oil slick. now, it's totally fine, no grease, no oil.
