Oil cleansing method

Thank you to the mumsnetter who mentionned this a few days ago! I looked it up and have done it a couple of times, and it is fantastic! It has made such an amazing difference to my skin in such a short time: it is much clearer, softer, with no dry patches, and some old stubborn blackheads are finally gone. And it is cheap! What's not to like!

My skin really improved the first week with just the odd zit coming out but now at the start of the second week i've got loads coming out. I think it's cos i started using castor oil so it's drawing them out quicker, which can only be good i suppose.

IrritableGrizzly · 04/05/2009 08:26

I haven't got hold of castor oil yet, am just using virgin coconut oil - it's great stuff. Very light, wipes off easily, anti-bacterial properties and smells gorgeous! Not sure I'll bother adding castor oil if it carries on this well.

MayorNaze · 04/05/2009 08:34

again a vote from me for pure olive oil. have combi skin and used to get dry flaky skin on forehead but still greasy underneath IYSWIM?

now - no flakes, even tone all over

i am a BIG convert

nappyaddict · 04/05/2009 08:43

Where did you get coconut oil from?

NoBingoWings · 04/05/2009 09:27

Nappyaddict

Sadly Im one of the few that the OCM didnt work for and it made my skin much worse.

I tried it for 3-4 weeks and found that I got the most terrible deep spots under the skin-sort of trapped ?? if that makes sense

I have had this problem in the past and would get the same thing if I had a facial-Im guessing the massage somehow caused it.

Ive now gone back to my usual cleanser -Tesco organic cream cleanser -gently massaged in and then rinsed off.I also got some excellent advice on another thread to use Roc-Retinox moisturiser .

Apparently it fights wrinkles and spots-3 days in I am amazed-the spots are clearing up and my skin looks lovely

IrritableGrizzly · 04/05/2009 12:54

Nappyaddict I got virgin coconut oil from a health food shop, but you might be able to get it from bigger supermarkets as well.

toffeeapple · 07/05/2009 14:31

Hi day 6 of using just Jojoba oil:
Alright, pores looking worse again but I now know that it's because they're clearing themselves out so prepared to persevere.
Also I'm not using any foundation anymore, as it was too greasy (someone kindly pointed that out to me on this thread).
So all my skin is getting at the moment is: oil, water and powder.
I will eventually buy a mineral foundation but at the moment I don't miss wearing any (and I used to be a foundation addict, I used to slap it on).
I'm like you girls the thought of using facewash is awful! Never again.
I do have fine lines around the eyes now but only if I laugh or something, and my hands do look a bit dryer (and red [hmmm]) but they no longer have dry patches (for example between fingers) like I used to get.
For the eyes I might use extra moisturizing under eye cream.
I might use castor oil together with jojoba if someone says that it makes the spots/blackheads come out quicker.
Just a bit worried to end up looking furry!!!
I might just do the castor oil once a week.

pollywobbledoodle · 08/05/2009 00:12

anybody use fake tan and ocm?

what works for you?

pollywobbledoodle · 08/05/2009 00:16

do ocm every 2-3 days

normally have used johnsons holiday skin...presumably if i apply after oil it might go patchy....anybody tried

zisforzebra · 09/05/2009 00:04

Nappyaddict I bought pure coconut oil from Holland and Barratt a little while ago to use as moisturiser on my DS (and now myself because it's great!)). It was £9.99 for a really large pot.

I've reduced the amount of castor oil in my mix so i now have mainly sunflower oil, bit of castor oil, some olive oil and a few drop of lavender oil to stop me smelling like chips. I think i've been going for aobut a month now and it's working really, really well.

spiderinthebath · 09/05/2009 10:13

Anyone with slightly dry skin out there - what oil do you use? have been using olive but want to try coconut or almond, what do you think?

nappyaddict · 10/05/2009 15:42

toffee are you still doing no poo? I will have been doing it 3 weeks on Thursday but am noticing I have got quite bad dandruff. Not sure if using a different conditiner will improve it as I am only using Asda's own coconut one atm.

Tigerbear · 10/05/2009 19:01

Hello all! Right, I said I would come back to report on how my skin is doing during my period, when I guess it is normally spot-tastic time! Well, I did get a few, but no-where near as many as normal, and the ones I did get have started to go really quickly. Generally, I'm very pleased, and will definitely continue OCM. The only place I don't use it for is to take off my eye makeup - I did try it the first few times, but it made me have what looked like a black oil slick everywhere, and was just too messy (and made my flannel go all yucky!). Now I just use my Simple face wipes to take off mascara, etc, then use the OCM on the rest of my face.

Hands still like Nana hands, although admittedly haven't been using hand cream!

toffeeapple · 11/05/2009 14:31

Day 11: Originally I developped a beard of blackheads and larger pores, but since last night the pores look like they are magically tightning up again and the blackheads look like they are fading.
I do have a few more obvious fine lines now that's the only thing. I blame the castor oil as it's quite drying.
I also use quite thick hand cream now (nivea classic) as my hands did look dryer.
I'm thinking of taking my mascara off first as well as I have the feeling it's drying my under eye area too.
Nappyaddict, re the no poo method I replied to you in the no poo thread.

creamcaramella · 15/05/2009 04:27

Hi! ok i've bought my castor oil,to be mixed with olive oil. So how do u measure the ratio? in mls? yes i'm dumb in that field. I also have pure peanut oil. Has anyone used that?

IrritableGrizzly · 15/05/2009 07:47

Well I'm feeling pretty down about the whole thing as I've had really bad spots for the last week or so and I came on today, so obviously even the OCM isn't enough to cure my fecking acne. GOD I'm sick of looking like a teenager (and not in a good way) I'm 34 for crying out loud - when is it going to end?

Sorry, rant over Think I'm going to start a thread on this in Health, see if anyone has any bright ideas to cure this condition. I'm just so tired of it

pollywobbledoodle · 15/05/2009 11:17

cremcaramella....it doesn't matter whether you measure in mls or fl oz as long as you get the proportions right

letswiggle · 15/05/2009 11:58

ACNE: I find Retin-A cream (prescription only) is the only effective remedy. Go to your GP and ask for it, and don't let them try to prescribe you useless antibiotics.

I'm doing the OCM - it's been about a month now. My spots are better though haven't gone. I think the method is at least as good as any other commercial product I've used, and much cheaper, so will stick with it. My skin is definitely softer and more even than before. I'm trying to see whether it will sort out the spots so I don't have to use Retin-A anymore - will give it another month I think. My skin certainly doesn't feel oily now and seems to become less shiny through the day than it used to, so I'm using less make-up. Overall I'm quite pleased and have been recommending it to girlfriends.

toffeeapple · 20/05/2009 20:03

Day 20: I don't know what's going on but all of my t-line (apart from the forehead) looks likes it's covered tiny blackheads trying to come out. Half way in half way out IYSWIM.
They are looking white as well. Is that a good thing or what? Has anyone experienced that?
I keep wanting to pick them it's so tempting.
The other thing is my hands look papery as well, but also they are red. Not red but tanned. Would that have something to do with it?
When my hands are down and the blood rushes through them more, they look a lot redder than my arms?

Tigerbear · 21/05/2009 01:17

have got a MASSIVE spot right between my eyes - it's HUGE!!! I really thought the OCM had sorted all the spots. Generally though, my skin is still less blotchy than before. It's just that I keep getting really hard spots just under the skin - very lumpy. Not sure if they are ingrown hairs, as always come up in the same place, where I've been tweezing. Anyone had the same problem?

MrsMcCluskey · 21/05/2009 22:44

I have gone back to my old routine, my skin imporved with OCm but has gone to pot the last few days.

toffeeapple · 27/05/2009 11:21

Day 27: I'm just doing jojoba oil now, and I'm doing it a different way.
I put oil on my face before I shower, then leave it on while I shower, then rinse it off with my hands.
My skin looks absolutely beautiful, I don't know if it's gonna go downhill again but after a breakout a week ago, it now looks even, neat, clear, fresh, still a few tiny blackheads right under my chin, but I think it might take a while to shift those, as I have had them for years probably.
On the whole I'm very very happy.
Fingers crossed that it carries on like this.

Sazisi · 27/05/2009 21:31

After lurking on this thread for ages, I've finally started the OCM today

I'm using avocado oil with a bit of castor oil; the avocado might be a bit heavy though because it took forever to wash off it was just what I happened to have lying around, perhaps I should water it down with a lighter oil?

I'm reckoning on my (already awful) skin getting worse at first, but hopefully being beautiful for my birthday, friend's wedding and a christening in July.
If not. the plan is to cry, then maybe get something toxic on prescription

cocolepew · 27/05/2009 21:36

I started 3 days ago, I'm using extra virgin olive oil and a bit of lavender oil. I was going to get castor oil but Boots had run out today. I have awful whiteheads and thought the c o would help. I'll try again at the weekend. DH told me my skin looked 'tight and glowy' last night. With no prompting

mammya · 27/05/2009 22:04

Glad to see this is still going strong

I've stopped using castor oil altogether as I found it was to drying on my skin. I'm just using coconut oil with a few drops of papaya oil (which is meant to be a good exfoliant), then I apply camelia kissi oil as a moisturiser. Although I still get a few spots just before my period, on the whole my skin looks a lot better, more glowy and dewy, lots of blackheads are gone (my "heritage" ones tha had been there for years) so I'm going to stick with this.

Toffeeapple, I wouldn't have been able to resist squeezing those half in, half out blackheads . Are they gone now? Otherwise you could try exfoliating them to oblivion with brown sugar mixed with oil.
