Oil cleansing method

Thank you to the mumsnetter who mentionned this a few days ago! I looked it up and have done it a couple of times, and it is fantastic! It has made such an amazing difference to my skin in such a short time: it is much clearer, softer, with no dry patches, and some old stubborn blackheads are finally gone. And it is cheap! What's not to like!

For anyone interested more info here

Perhaps if the blackheads, etc are coming out, you're going to have enlarged pores for a while? I wouldn't try neat castor oil though, it's very drying (no, I can't get my head round that either, but apparently it's quite harsh).

oh am v of gritty bits coming out, how satisfying!!

Greensleeves - agree that you should try less castor oil maybe, it is supposed to be quite powerful stuff. at the beard of pustules!

everGreensleeves · 17/04/2009 19:30

do you think hazelnut oil would be any use? Or pure lemon oil?

I've been using bio oil for the last week or two and it's been bloody brilliant. I must say, on the days I do it, my skin looks much much less haggard and sort of plumped up. I still have spots but that's kind of my default position since the age of about 13. Hoping they get less as time goes on.

toffeeapple · 17/04/2009 21:23

I'm going for it again tonight (I'm kind of addicted to large pores now!! )
I have one reservation, I read somewhere before that if you use a cream that's too soft or greasy, your skin tends to collapse, and it's the collapse of the face that makes it look bad, not the wrinkles etc...
So when you use oil, obviously it's soooo soft that it's gonna make your skin collapse, hence the large pores (I've also noticed that the lines from my nose to my lip corners are more pronounced since I've been doing OCM. It almost makes me look more tired).
What does everybody else think?

SammyK · 17/04/2009 21:28

This sounds fab I'm very tempted to try it

I have oily skin, blackheads, and spots. I have tried lotions, potions, antibiotics and strong precription tabs prescribed by dermotoligist. Nothing has worked!

So am I right in thinking I should do 80:20 sunflower oil:castor oil?

raindroprhyme · 17/04/2009 22:22

i have been using it for just over a week and love it. Sammy sounds like you and me have similar probs. i have also had nasty tabs from dermotoligist.
i am still spotty but black heads a going and skin looks great apart fom the spots. my make stays put all day as no mid morning slippage from oil slick.
i just used olive oil to start and have used 30% castor oil 70% olive oil mix the last 2 nights and id is definitly more drying.
i am going to experiment with different base oils but so far so good can't wait to go and see the dermotoligist my skin hasn't been this good ever(well since 13 years old)

kittywise · 17/04/2009 22:33

toffee, you facial skin is attached directly to the muscle underneath, it is only the movement of the muscle that cause lines and sag. Use the time that the oil is on your face to really give it a good hard massage, pinch and roll the skin, concentrate on the lines you are worried about.
It will help, honestly

kittywise · 17/04/2009 22:34

greensleeves, it will be fine, just give the face a good massage with the oil and hot flannel it off

nappyaddict · 17/04/2009 23:44

ooooh i have some coconut oil somewhere that i bought as a hair conditioner. will find it out.

biffandchip · 17/04/2009 23:55

Still can't get my paws on any castor oil. How about CastrolGTX as a substitute

nappyaddict · 17/04/2009 23:58

Have you tried Boots or Lloyds?

MamaHobgoblin · 18/04/2009 10:26

There was a link at the top of this thread to a seller on Amazon for Castor Oil - I used them and it was fine. It comes in a small 100ml bottle, but it'll last ages because you use so little.

Now, where can I get hold of coconut oil? Hmm, I see an expensive visit to the Oxford Culpeper's looming!

toffeeapple · 18/04/2009 11:18

This is where I found my castor oil. Quite expensive but organic, you know you're getting the real deal.

toffeeapple · 18/04/2009 11:24

Day 2 of castor oil and JOjoba:
Really weird, I think someone was right (MamaHobgoblin I think) in saying that the large pores are probably the result of black heads coming to the surface.
Yesterday after doing it, I discovered with Horror/Delight that all my pores where filled with blackheads, muck trying to come out!!!
So excited! I can't wait till I get the "gritty" stuff as it will mean that my pores are clearing up slowly but surely!!
In fact, by using harsh "anti oil" facial scrubs for months (if not years) I clogged my pores even more without realizing it, and now the oil producing of my skin is re balancing itself, hence my T line not looking shiny any more!!!
So happy!

TsarChasm · 18/04/2009 11:28

Castor oil manufacturers are probably scratching their heads in confusion about the sudden demand

TsarChasm · 18/04/2009 11:30

I've just thought, they might think there is a terrible epidemic of constipation going round

PinkPussyCat · 18/04/2009 11:32

Just a quick post to say I have been using the OCM for 3 weeks (10% Castor/90% sunflower oil) and my skin has never looked better, I used to get big sore spots around my chin/jawline and they are all gone. Am delighted to have finally found something that works for me!

toffeeapple · 18/04/2009 15:14

This is what I'm gonna try out as well (getting carried away now):
I'm gonna put some mayonnaise on my hair (homemade of course) as a mask before I wash it. It's gonna make it shiny as ever, if you think about it, egg yolk has been used for centuries to make your hair shiny, Olive Oil is bloody good for your hair, and vinegar is good for your hair.
The fact that it's made into a mayo is gonna make it the perfect texture to use as a conditionner!!
I heard american women use mayo on their hair.

everGreensleeves · 18/04/2009 17:43

wow, that is such a cool idea!

[goes off to brush teeth with pesto]

pointydog · 18/04/2009 18:12

lol @ this thread

I am sooo tempted. But I think I might turn out like greeners and just get a face full of greasy pimples

whoingodsnameami · 18/04/2009 19:07

My castor oil arrived at some point, dont know when as I found it on the doorstep this morning (rarely use the front door) I thought the packaging was wet, but when I opened it I discovers one of the bottles was smashed, how I did'nt cut my fingers I dont know, grrrr, luckily I ordered 2 bottles.

Wolfcub · 18/04/2009 19:31

I've been lurking on this thread for ages and am trying hte method 1-2 times a week.

Just a quick post really - castor oil, behind counter at tesco pharmacy 1.95 for a calpol sized bottle

zanz1bar · 18/04/2009 21:33

love this thread.

I am now on week three and the results are fantastic, sore lumpy spots gone, black heads going, pores still there but now look healthy not yucky.

Got caught up in the 'cut your own hair' thread and had a go at that as well. Thanks MN i have saved loads, all i need now is a good sugar wax recipe?
