Oil cleansing method

mammya · 12/03/2009 08:56

Thank you to the mumsnetter who mentionned this a few days ago! I looked it up and have done it a couple of times, and it is fantastic! It has made such an amazing difference to my skin in such a short time: it is much clearer, softer, with no dry patches, and some old stubborn blackheads are finally gone. And it is cheap! What's not to like!

For anyone interested more info here

I stumbled across this post at the weekend, got home from work, skipped up to the local chemist to get some castor oil only to be told 'sorry, we don't sell it any more, pregnant women were buying it' wtf??!! [police-state emoticon] Am off to source some from non facist chemist.

MamaHobgoblin · 14/04/2009 22:43

Ok, I'm going in! Finally got my Castor Oil from Amazon, have made up 30/70 with veg oil from the cooking cupboard. Am very nervous about making my horrible blackheady, oily (Portuguese) skin worse, but here goes!

Shitemum · 14/04/2009 22:56

Can I try this method using just olive oil or just sunflower oil? Or do I have to use castor oil?

kittywise · 15/04/2009 07:11

You don't have to use castor oil

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 15/04/2009 14:45

Toffee you definitely need to add castor oil. I would alternate between OCM and your old scrub until it arrives if you feel that your skin is being made worse.

Shitemum you don't have to use it, but if you have oily skin then it is recommended. I need to use it in my mix otherwise my skin doesn't come clean.

Tinker · 15/04/2009 14:51

ha ha at police-state emoticon. I wonder if that was teh same chemist that wouldn't sell someone (pregnant) some hair dye yesterday.

Is this oil cleansing malarkey only suitable for dry skins or oily skins or any type of skin?

toffeeapple · 15/04/2009 16:03

Day 5: I'm afraid I gave in to the old scrub yesterday. My pores haven't looked this big since my teenage years. It's no good.
This morning my pores looked a bit smaller thanks to the scrub but on the other hand my T line looked even more greasy than when I used olive oil

I'm sure as soon as I start using a more appropriate oil it will be OK.
In the mean time, if it's not, and for the "in between" days if I don't do it every night, can someone recommend a natural facial wash/scrub that you can buy?
Tinker: I'm obviously experimenting on this but I've read that it should be ok for every type of skin but that you may need to alter the dosages and experiment with different oils before you find what suits you.
Alibaba thanks for your advice good idea. I might do one on one off while I'm waiting

whoingodsnameami · 15/04/2009 17:55

I find all the facial scrubs bring me out in spots, even the clearasil ones, now I just use dove soap and exfoliating gloves, works wonders,

MamaHobgoblin · 16/04/2009 11:23

Re. police state, when I asked in Boots for Castor Oil, I was told it wasn't sold there and that if I was pregnant, it wasn't a good idea! I know it's frowned on now for bringing on contractions (doesn't work, just makes you squit for England and probably not v comfortable with a large baby inside) but good god! Thank you for making my decisions for me, Boots.

And did I really look 9 months pregnant? [anger]

Day 1 - tried it last night - I had to scrub with the flannel in the end as the oil wasn't coming off again and I panicked, as I HATE the feeling of oily skin! Face soft, looks a little better, feels moist and slightly greasy today, but I'm going with it.

MamaHobgoblin · 16/04/2009 11:24

Arse.

toffeeapple · 16/04/2009 14:32

Mind your own business "Boots Staff".
Did she think you wanted to drink it? That's how it's supposed to bring on contractions isn't it? Not when you cleanse your face with it.
Re OCM, Mama I got my oils through the post today, I'm gonna do 40% castor oil/60% Jojoba oil. We'll see.
I've been carrying on with my normal cleansing routine while waiting for the oils and my pores are getting smaller and skin feels firmer, but forehead/nose/chin seem to produce much more oil than when I was using the Olive Oil on its own.
Keep reporting the outcome please Mama, as I think we've got a similar skin type (I've got fair skin but I'm french and I think the french tend to have a greasier skin ).

mammya · 16/04/2009 19:34

I'm French and I don't have greasy skin! I don't think your nationality has any bearing on your skin type tbh...

OP posts:
toffeeapple · 16/04/2009 19:44

Yeah but where do you come from in France? I come from the south of France (as a general rule, I'm sure the further south you go the oilier the skin and larger the pores.) Non?
Hope you didn't get offended.

mammya · 16/04/2009 20:47

oh non! offended, moi? mais pas du tout!

You may be right, I don't know. I'm from the north myself.

OP posts:
toffeeapple · 16/04/2009 21:48

Well put it this way, more or less everyone I know in the south of France have dilated pores and greasy (ish) skin.
More or les everyone I know in this country have tiny/non existant looking pores.
Anyway,
Day 1 of using castor oil/Jojoba combo:
Face glowing looking wonderful and even.
Pores still looking huge and deep. I can't even remember what they looked like when they were invisible (pre OCM).
There must be a chemical reason why, although the skin becomes less oily with the OCM, the pores look larger. I don't understand it.
I'm hoping that the pores take a few days to close themselves up. Otherwise, goodbye oils, hello daily scrub from Asda!

everGreensleeves · 16/04/2009 22:20

I have been using a mix of EV olive oil and castor oil since reading this thread - and now have a carpet of tiny zitty bumps all over my chin and cheeks

Is this a wind up? Is it hogwash? You can tell me, I won't mind

everGreensleeves · 16/04/2009 22:24

bump, or more accurately pimple

KaiserSosay · 16/04/2009 22:25

oh you are all freaks

everGreensleeves · 16/04/2009 22:38

fuck off fishwits

Vamonos · 16/04/2009 22:49

Greensleeves - I tried EV olive oil and it didn't feel all that nice so switched to sunflower oil and it's lush. Been at it for about 2 weeks now and skin is definitely less flaky and haven't had any major zits.

Have not tried the castor oil yet, though have ordered some.

Dunno about the zit problem - it may be that it's 'bringing stuff to the surface', but that always sounds a bit odd to me. I'd suggest trying a different oil. Oh and make sure the flannel is v clean (not that I'm casting aspersions or anything on your flannel cleanliness ).

nappyaddict · 17/04/2009 03:12

I am trying this with almond oil and sunflower oil as I don't have anything else.

nappyaddict · 17/04/2009 03:19

I've read it and I think i've got the gist. Is this right?

I have to pour oil into my hand and massage it slowly but firmly over my face. How long should I do this for?

Then I wet my cloth with warm water and place it over my face til it goes cool, wipe and rinse. Repeat 3 or 4 times.

Then rub a tiny drop of oil between my palms, pat it on my face and gently massage in.

Sounds easy enough I'll do it tomorrow when DS is (hopefully) napping.

RoseOfTheOrient · 17/04/2009 06:30

I massage my face with the oil for about 2 or 3 mins.
You should use fairly hot water for the cloth, so when it covers your face, its quite steamy. This is what opens the pores and releases the oil so they get really clean.
Its quite relaxing actually.

KaiserSosay · 17/04/2009 10:04

am thinking back to last night.
I don't know WHY I felt you all fell into the freaks category.
